New Tundra purchase questions

Morning folks. A few questions in regard to ordering a customized Tundra - I am looking to order a 2020 DC Tundra Limited when they are released later this year and I am curious about how the process typically works. Due to the purchase of a specific color, the Limited Premium Package with options and with the accessories I would like, it would be a very low probability that a dealer would have the exact options I am looking for.

My question is, does one simply utilize Toyota's site and build as desired and then request a quote from a dealer? I assume the dealer would be able to obtain the specific color you were looking for and then would have to order all the accessories you added (example: TRD shocks, TRD brake pads, back seat tray, door ding protection, etc). I have also read that custom orders like these take up to 8 weeks vs just selecting a Tundra that is on the lot?

I went to the dealer when I ordered my tacoma and they gave me a delivery date.

It came in with the wrong nerf bars and I refused deleivery

They ordered the right ones, put them on and I took delivery

 

Absolutely go to Toyota.com to "Build & Price" after the 2020s have been released. Of course, you can do that now using 2019 if you want to familiarize yourself with the method. "Build & Price" will tell you exactly what you can order and the MSRP. The site will also tell you the dealers closest to you. It does not do a good job of telling you which of those dealers has exactly the truck you want.

Often, there are restrictions on which colors can be selected, and there will be restrictions that prevent you from ordering certain color combinations (exterior/interior), and restrictions on which packages can be combined. For example, the TRD equipment comes in the TRD Off-Road Package, and currently that cannot be combined with the Limited Premium Package that you wanted. Also, just like the domestic manufacturers, Toyota will often have certain exterior/interior colors and other options on "restriction" meaning they are not currently available, usually due to manufacturing or delivery issues.

Asian imports were the first cars that didn't allow you select virtually any option you wanted off a long menu of individual options; they either came loaded (no options), or with several small option items combined into one or two packages. They've loosened up on that a little since they're made in the US now, but not a lot. The domestic manufacturers have adopted the same method.

In the early days, imports were manufactured in the colors and options that management decided. To get another color, the only option was to find one that had been delivered to another dealer. Now, if dealers can't find exactly what you want, they can order what you want subject to Toyota's current restrictions. Flexibility in the ordering process will be highest immediately after the 2020 introduction, but you should begin a dealer selection process early.

Talk to several dealers in general terms using 2019 pricing NOW (July) before the dealers can even order a 2020. They will try to sell you a left-over 2019, and they will make it attractive...but you can forget about being picky about color, trim level, and obscure/less popular options on a left-over 2019. That will be the time to discuss ordering a 2020 to your specs...let the negotiation begin. If they think they have you "on the hook", you may have to go back to a dealer you previously visited to get a better price.

So when it comes to the MSRP that is listed after one selects the grade, packages and accessories, should you be set on that listed price from the site or is there some room for flexibility? In short, if I configure a 2019 Limitrd with the options I want, the MSRP (as built), which does include a delivery, handling process fee (1495.00) totals 48,622.00. Is this price what should be paid or can I expect higher/lower?

You have about $2000 in dealer added accessories. (What?...No Toyota bed cover?) Consider buying most of those accessories in the aftermarket, where you will often be buying the same item cheaper. Example: Wheel locks, $80. You can get the identical wheel locks off Amazon for probably $50 or less. On that many accessories, the savings will add up. Toyota accessories you must have are available online (Amazon using Toyota part #, Toyota of Cool Springs, etc.) for cheaper prices. Buying online, you will have the shipping, and possibly sales tax. Compare the delivered prices, not the sale price. TOCS has very competitive pricing and gives a FORUM20 discount on shipping.

Typical purchase price is several thousand less than MSRP depending on the dealer. Use one of the online sites like CarGurus to give you an idea of typical purchase price of similarly equipped trucks. Do a search here for other online site ideas and negotiation strategy. Delivery charges are typically non-negotiable and are the same at all dealers (no matter, it's the bottom line you care about). Sales tax and processing fees will vary depending on state and dealer, but feel free to call bs if you think the dealer is gouging you.

I note from your Build & Price that the Toyota.com site actually is looking at all 2019 trucks currently in your area. They are apparently done with 2019 assembly, and in the changeover. New orders will start soon. Your quote shows Silver Sky Metallic/Black Leather as available, but in my area the only available 2019 Limited is a DC in Black/Sand Beige leather. Yesterday it was also showing White and another interior color available. They are quickly clearing out the 2019s.

 

I am in a position trying to decide to purchase now or wait till 2020/2021 come out. I understand longer I wait, August/September/October, may not locate specific trims and color combinations. Seems what I read major changes will be in 2021/2022. Locked up deciding to keep the 09, 164,000 miles, and wait till the next generation model year or trade in the 09 for a 2019 Tundra. If I purchase 2019, and don't like the new generation it is a win win. Have a good offer for a 2019 Platinum 4 x 4. Plus waiting another year, more mileage on the 09 and less trade in value.

Toyota doesn't allow "custom orders". A dealer can "allocate" a truck that's due for production and have it shipped to your dealer.

Redefine your search without those accessories and just use Double cab limited, 4x4, with limited premium selected. The base options you select on Toyota's web site shows what's in dealers stock so you can try using a different zip code say 70 miles away and you might get more or less trucks.

Go in with a goal of paying invoice minus any incentives Toyota may have going on. Also check out Costco Auto prices from your dealer. It's usually around invoice or below invoice price. Don't pay MSRP and buy those accessories after you buy the truck. They don't need to come from the factory and can be bought online for better prices.

 

Go to https://www.toyota.com/deals/ and check out what incentives and deals are going on for your zip code.

Once those are established then start getting the dealer down on price. Rebates come from Toyota. The dealer needs to give up some too. Search this site about warranty costs. I negotiated my extended warranty before even going back to finance. The sales manager didn't want to due to variable cost. Told him it was part of the price of the car and we would take care of out now. I had shopped my credit union for warranty pricing. When you get back to finance, things are still negotiable. Tire package, etc. I didn't buy anything in finance except the wheel protection. I got them down a good bit on it. It was worth it to me at the discounted price. I get a lot of nails due to work. Plus it includes paintless dent repair.
