    It’s a water heater expansion tank, designed to reduce the changes in water pressure due to the expansion and contraction of the volume of water as it heats and cools in a closed system. This can create dangerously high fluctuations in pressure that will fatigue a home’s water supply piping over time and lead to failure. An internal rubber bladder is filled with compressed air that cushions water pressure changes

    When I was deployed to a built up base in the beautiful, middle east desert, we would hold our water in giant storage tanks that would sit in the sun all day. When the water would make it's way into the caddis, and it would be heated in the water heater. that's a damn hot water heater lol

    I had a guy that did the plumbing when I finished my basement quote me $250 to put it in plus the $400 for the tank. That was pex pipe though so there was no soldering at all.

    Check your county code. You may need to have a permit and have it inspected/installed by a plumber.

    Seems pretty easy with an electric HWH.

    This. Especially true for gas water heaters. If you put it in and your house blows up, who cares. If Benjamin Franklin plumbing does the install, you're probably getting a new house...if you live.

    Absolutely. Insurance might not cover either.

    My brothers ex-girlfriend and her 16 year old daughter were found dead due to a faulty hot water heater install. Leaks in the gas line and the flue was not routed correctly.

    Damn. Natural gas is no joke. When I'm teaching new guys, I have a pretty light hearted take on things, you learn better when you're not under pressure, except with natural gas. No one works on anything gas without brass tools, and fire extinguishers close by, and if were in a building we do as much as we can to vent the extra gas

    Natural gas is no joke. I work with 365*F NG that varies from .5 lb to 700 lb.

    A few of my friends have changed to tankless heaters. Instant hot when you need it, but no unnecessary heating while you are out. My heater is 13 years old so I expect it to fail soon. I will probably look into the tankless as an option. Just an idea, unless anyone here has had bad experience with those.

    I looked into that but was told that some of the feeder pipes had to be changed to 3". Plus it was like 4X more.

    When we were building our new house 10 years ago we moved into an apartment that had tankless. We were always having to go in and reset the overloads on the thing. One day I was home because the refrigerator broke and I had to clean all that up. Turned out the ac broke on the same day. I went to take a shower to cool off and heard all this banging when I turned it on like there was air in the system. I tuned off the shower and turned on the sink to see what was going on. I had only the hot water on and once whatever was in the line got thru, there was literally steam coming thru the faucet. Wouldn’t have believed it unless I saw it. I quick ran and threw the breaker to the heater. When I pulled the cover off of it, the 240 conductors insulation was melted about two inches back. If I hadn’t been home, the whole fucking apartment building woulda prolly gone up.

    I prefer tankless system... Just have to clean the coils more often which is not hard...

    I've always heard that the electric ones can't keep up with the load and most people aren't very happy with them. Gas ones seem to work much better.

    Glad to see you put pipe dope and monster blue tape down. I do about 4 of these a month.

    FYI - if anybody is using Shark-bite fittings with water heaters, they should have a min of 18" of copper between them and the water heater.

    I like that brass nipple being used on the T&P valve. The old valve used galvanized instead. Electrolysis caused by dis-similar metals can cause you a lot of grief.
    The braided lines are new to me as well ~ never seen those before.
    My water heater has the old school corrugated copper like the supply line coming into your unit. Good Job ! :)
