So I decided to debadge my truck and started on one side, but I'm having trouble getting the adhesive residue off.

What is the best way to get the residual adhesive off without messing anything up?

Not sure if this is the correct forum to be in for this, but it seems like a good place to start.

If the residue is heated up, you can use a plastic card (credit card, library card, ID etc) to plow the chunks off. Follow up with copious amount of rubbing alcohol on a clean cloth to remove the rest. Once clean, apply some wax and copious amount of ethanol for you.

It's pretty warm here in San Diego right now. All I used to get the badges off were some 8 lb. test braided fishing line and a bit of Goo-Gone with a plastic card, but it did not get the residue completely off. It's mostly off, but you can still see where the badges once were.

I'll try some rubbing alcohol, and follow up with some wax.

    Thanks!

I used Goo Gone on mine, and it worked perfectly. I did it when it was brand new though, so I don’t know if that made a difference. Possibly a clay bar?

The adhesive is about 4 years old so it might be a little more stubborn than yours was for sure.

Soak it in goo gone. Softens the adhesive to come off easier. If really bad, soak paper towel in it and press and hold to area to soak. Clean area afterwards with alcohol. Because its older and you dont want shadow badges showing you'll need to buff the area then wax and polish.

My truck is pretty much brand new which made it easier, but I did the following. Heated it up with a heat gun, then ran thick gauge fishing line behind the badge to separate from the adhesive. I then heated the leftover adhesive (which was a lot) and slowly picked/rolled it off with my fingers. After that I just wiped down with a microfiber towel and Goo Gone, took the residue right off. Washed the truck and enjoyed the clean look

    Mine was a similar process.
    Step 1 fishing line
    Step 2 eraser wheel
    Step 3 googone leftovers
    Step 4 wax
Step 5 have fiancee tell me its ugly without badges enough times that I drive to dealership and buy new ones to replace what I removed few days prior

:facepalm:should have just got double sided tape and reapplied the badges. Or did you toss them? Cause could sell here or blacked them out as well.

It’s hilarious because my wife told me it looks trashy. I told her badges are tacky. The fight continues, but I’ll never win and probably end up with blacked out ones in the future.

Makes sense. I removed mine and replaced with black badges, then posted the chrome ones up on freebies for others if they wanted them. Gone same day.

If a body shop was to take an emblem off they would most likely use an 3m eraserwheel along with this.
Screenshot_20180513-233013.jpg You can pick it up at Walmart, Home Depot, Fleet farm and any auto-body supply store for around $20. Also a great cleaner for applying stickers ect and tar removal.

Rubbing alcohol and fishing line. Soak behind badge then use line to cut away badge you will have to keep applying alcohol when running the line behind to loosen adhesive.

This is a great tool to pry the emblems off and to scrape the rubbery padding part of the adhesive off of the paint.

    https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Zogs-Surf...ogs+wax+comb&qid=1562899503&s=gateway&sr=8-11.

Be sure to take your time scraping that thick crap off before using goo gone. (watch this video. The dude used a plastic spoon! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLnGh3sIUrE ). A heat gun for a few seconds really helps to soften the thick rubbery crap.

I didn't use fishing line. I actually heated up my emblems for about 15 seconds, waited 20 seconds for the heat to transfer to the adhesive and then heated again. Then I used Mr Zogs wax comb tool to pry off the emblem from the body panel. This method beats the fishing line method hands down. If you heat it well and push the tool between the paint and the adhesive gently but firmly, most of the thick crap coms off with the emblem.

After I scraped off the thick crap and used goo gone on the thin adhesive residue, I used a microfiber with automotive paint polishing compound to get the paint all shined up.

I did all 4 emblems in less than an hour with this method.

Braided fishing line worked well for me, had no problems with that or getting the thick adhesive off after. It’s the residue I had issues with, but the rubbing alcohol definitely worked better than Goo-Gone. I still have some shadow emblems going on though.

I hope buffing and waxing takes care of it.

Turtle wax makes a sticker and decal remover in an aerosol can. Works wonders when I remove badges or old vinyl wraps or decals. Can be bought at autozone for about $7. I use the 3M eraser wheel on double sided tape when it is still caked in good then I go back with the turtle wax.

    update:

Buffed, polished, and waxed. There is still a shadow of the emblems unfortunately, but it’s better than it used to be. Hopefully it fades out over time.

I debadged my truck yesterday and used this 3M adhesive remover. It worked great. Now I need to do a coat of wax.

Try some rubbing compound to blend it in. Be careful with it though, it is abrasive. You will need to re polish and wax. Turtle Wax makes it.
