2nd Gen Backup Cam Upgrade

Ok so I have an 08 limited cm and it has the jbl system with factory backup cam mounted in the tailgate handle displaying in the head unit. It is very dated quality, is almost useless in low light, and lacks backup lines that would help out a lot on a huge truck. I went to the local audio shop to talk about a head unit upgrade and about backup cam upgrade options. They said there isn’t an upgrade option that can replace the stock one and I would have to mount another one below leaving me with two cams, one of which would be non operational. Does anyone know of something I can use to directly replace and upgrade the stock cam and if not what are your suggested backup cams to upgrade to?

 

I spliced into the harness just under the roof console, where they mount the screen. I have heard there is a point just behind the upper glove box that is closer, but the roof console is obvious. I am trying to find the schematic, maybe someone else will have it readily available before I can find it.

 

I was really wanting a replacement that I could remove the actual camera from the tailgate and splice there.

 

This is the one I installed into my 2007 CM. Granted, I didn't have one to begin with and now have an after market radio, but it's quality is great and the backup lines are right where my tires are.

Yeah that looks like the stock one, I’ll bet the backup lines are coming from the radio itself. How is it at night?

 

I have used the masters tailgaters camera latch and it worked great as well. This was with an aftermarket HU install.

I believe there may be a voltage supply difference 12 volts vs. 24 volts (or vice versa), stock vs. aftermarket. Make sure any new camera is the same voltage requirement as existing one.

 

Switches to black/white but I can see down the driveway in reverse with just dim brake / reverse lights.

 

The lines are in both the camera and the aftermarket head unit. On the tailgate there's a wire you can cut that will disable the lines so if you want to use the ones on the head unit you can. I think someone said that the stock camera isn't 12 volts so you may have to get power for the aftermarket camera from somewhere else. What I did is tap into the reverse light so the camera would only come on when the reverse lights came on. Since I didn't have a camera I ran both the wire for the camera and the wire from the hot side of the reverse light back to my Kenwood head unit so it would know when I was in reverse. There's several different places in the cab you can also get "reverse" power from.

If the reverse monitor is in the factory head unit I would use the factory wires. But if it's in the overhead console I would just run new wires but taking advantage of the factory plug at the tailgate so if I ever wanted to remove it I could. Under the rear seats on the double cab are a couple rubber plugs. I made a small hole in one of them to get the wires inside of the cab without drilling steel. I would think the CM would also have these.

 

Am installing this on one my daughter's 4Runner this weekend. The mirror camera doesn't cut it. Updated he received to a Kenwood, had the camera lines that turn (you can turn them on or off)

I’ve read a few reviews that say the upgraded head units improve the quality of the stock camera and the head unit will add the backup lines so I think I will just add a front camera and just see how the stock one looks for now.

 

Aftermarket camera $10+ are just as good as stock or even battery.

Did this one have the backup lines? Into am looking for a replacement camera. My wife's 2015 4runner has the lines and I like that.

 

Bought license plate reverse camera and got power fron the reverse tail light. Got power from red wire with purple line in it and the black wire for negative coming out of the reverse light bulb itself, also attached the red wire that come on the yellow RCA plug to the same power wire I hooked the camera to. I started from the back of my Kenwood DDX276BT head unit plugged yellow RCA into the camera in on the head unit and attached the red wire that's in the same line as the yellow RCA plug to the purple reverse wire on back of stereo. Ran RCA wire under the passenger carpet through a rubber plug the pushed the rubber plug back in and it was snug with RCA wire going through the side of rubber plug. Then put 3/8th pvc heat shield around the 20 ft or so RCA wire ranit to the back and attached wires accordingly as stated above. Also zip tied the wire tho existing wires under the truck along the frame rails to passenger rear reverse tail light bulb for 12v power and so the camera will only go on when reverse is engaged. I'm also looking to replace the stock camera in my 2011 platinum. My main concerns are will it fit in the handle where the stock one now resides, good quality, and how the heck can I splice it in at the handle/tailgate

 

Yup. Went with this $10 one. It's $16 right now. Comes with a little hole saw to make the hole in the OEM handle.

 

thats the one i got. works well cause you can point it to where it needs to be pointed, but holy hell it was the most difficult to point camera cause there is no mark on it to indicate what goes up, and its hard to rotate the inner camera without making it go out of focus. second thing i really dont like is the guidelines. they cant be turned off. fine if they happen to be in the right spot, but that will never be the case. and putting them up high on the tailgate not quite centered, they arent even close. so now i have lines on my aftermarket radio that i have adjusted for the exact use, but ive got these really distracting lines that are so far off its silly. looks kind of garbage having to deal with 2 sets of lines.

word to the wise for folk on here... everyone wires their cam to be powered by the reverse signal. the reverse signal is actually supposed to just trigger the head unit to switch to the camera. the cam should be powered by the trucks acc wire. that way you can switch to the camera manually in the head unit. i dont need that often, but its nice to double check that my trailer chains are still connected. or that i did, in fact, close the tailgate, lol.
