The car isn’t really costing you much. If you drop down to only two vehicles, your multi car discount really drops.

The insurance debate is mute to me.

I didn’t find the right thread for you either. It broke down DD a diesel. It was astronomical. I’ll look for it again tonight again.

    $2614 per year?

So for only $7.16 more each day, you can cruise in comfort in your bad ass, V8 powered truck, or you can sit in a tin can like the rest of the peons out there, looking up in envy when you see another lifted Tundra speed past.

Okay just kidding, lol. But really, if it's not much of a financial burden, why not just enjoy your truck since you prefer to drive it? It's not a rare vehicle that will appreciate in value, so there's no point in treating it like an investment.

My honest opinion, buy a cheap beater car. Mine is a 1995 Camry Wagon. It will run forever. Cost me 3,000 dollars 7 years ago.

I get your point, really I do. I daily drove my Tundra for almost 4 years. Loved firing that truck up. Before that, I DD trucks since high school (‘89-‘93).

I’m a truck guy, through and through. However...here is the but...

So I purchased my current truck in October (I think...maybe November) of ‘16, with 20 miles on the clock. Two months prior I also purchased a pretty clean Lexus IS350 with almost 61k on it. I almost have 112k on that car in under 3 years.
My truck has 35k on it in almost three years. By the time the three year anniversary I’m sure it will be pushing 36.5k miles. (Moving Rock in the bed at 3100 lbs each time)

If I didn’t buy that car, I would have 138k miles on the truck. Now for today’s standards, that’s not a lot, and can go double the mileage pretty easy.

Now this is a crappy comparison, but believe it or not, I’m on my second set of Michelin tires with that 36k miles due to that fun diesel power. First set was down to 40% at 18k miles and totally worthless in and inch of snow. I found a second set of take offs with 5000 miles and will be needing replaced by the winter. Heavy loads & dirt roads play hell I guess.

So the point of this without commuter:

-27 oil changes. Now my 2.5 gallon oil changes are not far off from the Tundras 8 qts. It’s actually very close. 65x27=1755

-Another 4 sets of tires on top of the two sets already. Tires...6000.00

-Fuel filters 7x35=245 (you all don’t need to worry about that cost.

-Speaking of fuel, this is always fun.
Diesel and mid grade is about the same here, so this will be applicable. 2.60.

DD my truck still does pretty good. 18-20 mpg is rather easy to get. So for the 51000 miles I would have spent 6979.00

Towing and hauling I do 11-14 mpg. So for the past 35k miles I averaged 14.8 mpg on my Fuelly app. 6149.00 for towing duties.

-transmission service. I can do these myself at 100.00 a pop from a kit directly from Allison. Internal and external filter. I do an external filter swap every year, but I will not include that cost in this comparison. Four total trans services per the manual. 400.00
The Tundra would be on #2 service (which I think is crazy).

-Five differential drain and fills, five transfer case services. That’s a bit spendy on my truck, and if I remember it was not as expensive on the Tundra. 1000.00

-I would have done a radiator coolant drain, flush, fill. I just purchased that red gold from Toyota at 20.00 per qt for the Lexus. Probably time for a water pump as well by this time. 250.00 for that when it’s all said and done.

I think that about covers all maintenance/fuel costs.

$22,778.00 to daily drive my truck for 3 years.

Hell, I paid 16,000.00 cash for the Lexus, and that’s one fun car to drive. Rwd, 306HP, light little sports sedan=fun daily driver, with Lexus quality.

My car has not been without maintenance items done.
400.00 for brakes (EBC), few windshields at 240.00 each, on second set of tires 1690.00, new struts 350.00, new water pump 75.00 plus 60.00 for the red gold.
$18715.00 is what I have invested in my old, fun commuter car that costs me pennies compared to my truck. Fuel has cost me 4875.00 for the past three years.

This might will blow you away. Now if I just DD my truck, I would be looking at replacement costs now every 5-6 years with 276k+ miles.
At my current rate, it will take me 23.6 years to get that mileage. I’m realistic though, and will probably do 10-12 years with a lot less miles.

So we are already 4063.00 in the positive for me to DD a car. Not a huge cost, and by most people’s standards, isn’t worth the hassle.

Remember the truck replacement cost? I paid 58000.00 for my truck, and I’ve seen some Tundras in 1794 trim packages not far off. So this can relate. I chose the upper packages, well, because I want to. I like nice shit.

After trading in or selling outright on the DD truck with 275k miles might make up for the difference in increased cost. Now add up a truck replacement over a 10-12 year period.

    58000.00
    +68334.00 (9 years of DD a truck)

$126,336.00 for a daily commuter and I’d be on my second high mileage truck, and in three years, dumping another 58000.00 on another daily driven truck.

Now this is also assuming no mechanical failures in these figures, like cam tower leaks, AIP failures, wheel bearings, front diff, transmission, injectors, head gaskets, alternator, batteries, etc.

Some things to consider. I personally wish I could get back a small fraction of the money spent DD trucks.

I won’t even get into parking and driving in stop/go traffic.

DD - 15 miles to work, but I drive to construction sites during the day also, and we use it as a family vehicle over weekends and out of town trips, so I total about 30,000 miles a year.
Truck is about 17 months old and I am at 42,000 miles.
On the bright side - because I use it for work the company card pays for all gas (except out of town family trips that take more than one tank)

I drive my truck up and over a 9,000 ft Teton pass most days. It’s 10% grade, so great on the breaks too! Work is 25 miles one way. Most days I drive 20 miles then ride my ebike the rest of the way. It’s tourist season so the traffic is nuts.
I will be getting a VW Golf TDI in the Fall to commute with. Till then I will drive the truck up and over Teton Pass 4 days a week.

With the cost of keeping a second car I dont think it would benifit me to buy one to save gas.

In the long run I may even save money.

I drive mine every day and I don't care about miles.
I was bummed when I put the first 1000 on it but after that I understood it to be my truck that I bought to drive.

I didn't want to do anything to it either but after putting in a new sound system and an off road light I guess that went out the window too

I can see the argument for having a commuter to actually save money if your commute is a long one. The thing that I don't like about the commuter car (used to have one) is that it adds another vehicle to my fleet that I have to maintain. It works out ok if you have lower mileage vehicles, but as the vehicles age, things start failing and need work. It is more of my time to maintain another vehicle.

I am lucky enough to live in a place that has free public transit should my truck ever break down - and we have multiple vehicles in the family. So, I can make due if the truck does break down. I have played the game in the past with a truck and a commuter. Eventually, I got so tired of wrenching on both of them that I went out and bought a brand new Tundra. Sort of throws the "I'm going to save money doing this" scheme out the window when you just go buy a new rig anyway. I had a commuter with the Tundra for a while - but decided to drop it because I didn't like having 4 vehicles in the family to maintain.

Yeah I hear you there. I can buy a lot of gas and maintenance for a 10K commuter car, plus insurance. But it piece of mind for me. Plus the pass is so steep I have to gear down and still ride my breaks more then I like. Then coming back up puts a lot of load on my motor. 5.7 does kick ass! Plus I DAP tuned it. Thinking of trying OV tune. But that money I could use towards a commuter car.

Valid points for maintaining another vehicle once the mileage starts creeping up there. Once my Lexus gets up to 200k plus, I will have to evaluate that situation.

We are talking about a 2010 Camry with 110k miles, that he owns, and puts 11-12k miles on it a year. By the time this car gets to be a maintenance hog, it will be another 10-14 years.

For the people that drive under 40 miles a day, I probably wouldn’t have a commuter either. The math doesn’t add up, unless I already had the other vehicle.

Funny I have been going over and over if it worth getting a commuter. Or driving the shit out of the Tundra. At 50 miles a day it adds up, then throw in a pass. 1st world problems:annoyed:

I understand that the math greatly favors buying a daily driver since you're driving over 25k miles a year. And an IS350 sounds like a fun and reliable daily beater for only $16k.

You know, that's a pretty detailed breakdown. I'm going to need you to take a look at my household expenses and create a similar breakdown for my wife to let her know that she needs to curb her Amazon spending.

    LMFAO!!!

Amazon is the devil. Love it...but damn.

The math doesn’t work out for a lot of people, especially if you don’t already have the car.

I would recommend keeping the Camry. I DD my Tundra with a hand calculate 12.5 MPG 80 miles per day round trip. I fill up about every 3 days.. Sometimes I can stretch it to 4. Comes close to $550 a month in gas alone. I'm joining the poor house fast.

Damn dude every 3 days? Don’t you have the larger tank? I fill up every 12 days at 50 miles a day up a pass. You running large tires?

Yup, I've got the bigger tank. I'm running basically 2.5/1, 1.25 wheel spacers and 295/70 STT Pro's. The tires are 72lbs each I believe. Plus it sounds great when you push the pedal down. I'm an aggressive driver... Should probably work on that issue.

I have an Audi I was using as a daily driver, but the maintenance on that thing has been killer. Major repairs have been needed. So I'm selling it and going back to the truck. Not really looking forward to the wear and tear, but hey. i bought it to drive... right.

Yeah I thought you might be running 295, 72 lbs a tire that fair amount of weight. Bet the truck looks bad ass. You should re gear to 4:88 or 5:29.

I will say this, owning the “right” commuter car is key here.

In five years when I can hang up the “daily work thing” I can have something more problematic over the long haul...like the Audi S4.

For work, 8 miles a day round trip. I don't even get on the highway. Plan on keeping my truck for a looooong time.

I agree getting a Volkswagen Golf TDI and putting studs on it. 50 mpg and 235 lbs of torque.

Jackwagon what Audi was your daily driver? Looking at 2012 Audi A3 TDI for a daily. Think I am buying a grenade? The reviews on that motor and year have been good.

My truck is a tow pig that's about it besides the weekend cruzing I do with my family at times. Truck is an 08 now 84k miles. I also own a 06 hyndai elantra for 1400 bucks it has 45k miles on it. I take my son to school everyday in that maybe 15 miles a day. And also have a take home company truck. My goal is to be able to let my son drive my tuck in high school we will see. Btw my son is only 4 yrs old lol
