Rear Shackles - What You Running

I need 1" lift in the rear so between blocks and shackles. I know the vast majority are going to say shackles, period. Here's the deal, I don't really tow anything but a mower once or twice a year and don't offroad. Put about 20k highway miles a year.

So just installed new front coilovers and need new tires in a week so the budget is tight. Trying for other less expensive options than Coachbuilder, Boss 4x4s or Toytec. I know they're great but looking for other options. TIA.

 

Toytecs on mine. The ones boss4x4s are Toytecs.

I also replaced the oem leaf bushing with the poly bushings you can add on with the toytecs and really helped “smooth” out the rear end suspension.

 

They are all the same as far as performance. I have had from coachbuilders to total chaos to some eBay. They all ride and perform exactly the same. Buy the poly bushings. They are worth it.

(I have 1 inch blocks on my new tundra. Have shackles in the garage and I’m not swapping them in. It ain’t worth it)

 

Any reason not swapping? Did the truck come with the blocks and dont feel like going through the motions or you chose the blocks?

Pretty much convinced to get the poly bushings.

 

Yea. I mean the others look great and bulky but more than what I need. More than I want to spend too. Comforting to know others are running Maxtrac and doing fine.

 

I just went through this debate also and went with coachbuilder +3 shackles based on my build and driving goals on and off road.

Since you know you will not be doing that much off-roading, save the money and do as others above mentioned and go with something else. Save the money now and then swap out a year or so from now if necessary.

Coachbuilder +2s. Absolutely love them! Changing out the bushings in the leaf eyelets to polyurethane made a huge difference. The rear end of my truck is butter now!

 

Toytec here. It was a toss up between CB or TT and I just flipped a coin.

The only thing I wish I had done different was to place the nut on the outside of the shackles so I would have extra room for my spare. Even if you have them installed at a shop, ask them to put the nuts to the outside.

 

Did you replace the bushings yourself? If so, what did you use to remove oem bushings? I've heard it's a pain.

 

Ball joint press aided with some PB blaster. Sometimes the press doesn’t quite push it out far enough so you have to get creative with some type of spacing. You can rent that for free at most auto parts stores.

 

Thanks. Have the bushings but didn't install with shackles. Lack of tools and time when I was doing the work. Thinking I'll go back and swap them now.

 

I bought the kobalt 750 lbs impact gun and rented at oreillys the tool kit to push them out only took a few seconds to push out not hard at all then also purchased just to have the 350 lbs kobalt impact as well

 

Some people have a tough time with them. I did use my impact but it was not strong enough as it is only quarter drive. But it did speed it up because it takes a lot of turns. Start soaking them with PB blaster a few days before hand. Or longer LOL. Some people had to take them to a shop because they were rusted in place. Or they had to get medieval on it. Mine came right out. Hope for the best and be prepared for a headache.

I used a 1/4” impact on mine. What I did was I heated the bushings up till they were on fire. Literally. I then took a 1” hole saw and drilled the rubber portion completely out. Took a couple times to heat, drill, heat, drill.... you get the idea. But only took maybe 10 mins to drill it out. I then took a sawzall to the steel outer insert and cut it on the top and bottom. Couple hits with a 1 1/4”....or maybe 1 1/8” socket.... I can’t remember off hand but it fit the sleeve diameter perfectly. Anywho.... couple hits with a good size maul and the sleeve popped right out.

 

Man. This sounds like major surgery! I'm going to be the one that it's going to take an act of congress to remove old ones.

I went with Maxtrac ($82) since I only needed an inch and others have used them but now wondering about the poly bushings. I know coach builder has them but wondering if someone else sells them that aren't so pricey.

 

Agree...I've done some searching on ploy bushings but haven't really turned up anything. Just wondering if anyone has came across something other than want coach builder offers for bushings.

 

I have CB 2" on the way and will have 1" blocks and U bolts for sale soon...if your interested.

 

I got the bushings that came with my Toytecs. I believe they are Energy Suspension

Yeah I will have to check and see if they sell separately from the shackles.

 

I believe this is the bushing kit needed. It doesn't say it is for a Tundra but the leaf spring bushing for Tundra and Tacoma cross reference for my 2017 Tundra and 2004 Tacoma.
I Actually have the kit sitting in my garage, just haven't had time to check everything out and install. I figured for under $20 shipped it was worth testing.
