Back Up Camera Wires in A-Pilar - Help

Surgery done but I cannot get a signal to deck when put in reverse....I followed the directions as shown in the video for this deck. The pic above shows the type of RCA wire I am using.

My connection is:
Silver RCA wire to Red in Pillar A (as shown in video)
Black RCA wire to Black n White in Pillar A (as shown in video)
Then I plug the RCA into the "Camera" RCA back of radio

The from Green in Pillar A, I have one single wire going to Radio "Reverse"


What am I missing?? 2008, SR5, 4x4

 

do you have the factory camera or aftermarket? I had the exact same problem with my Rostra camera and never got it to work, even though the Rostra was hooked up via the factory pre-wired plug and went to an OEM roof console screen

 

I have the Rostra camera, so yes, same problem.

It worked well with the rearview monitor as I bought the kit.

Plugged up the rearview and it also now doesn’t work.

Fuses all seems to work

Any thoughts?

 

Did you do a 6v step down for camera voltage? Most HU's are 12v while the Toyota OEM camera is supposed to be 6v. I suspect the Rostra cam is different from the OEM camera in some way, whether it's a 12v being stepped down to 6v, or it's just enough signal for the OEM screen, but not enough for something that gets converted. I never bothered to take my multimeter to it, though.

 

I followed the video instructions and didn’t apply no step up or down as I wouldn’t know where to start ( not that electrical inclined

My radio tech two weeks back, tapped into the rear plug (by spare) with a self made camera, and it worked.

Then Plugged up tailgate camera nothing!!!

Will he need to step down voltage to rear camera?

Also do you have the same head unit?

 

I suspect he does need to step down from 12v to 6v. I had a Pioneer 4200NEX so it was a different HU. I believe the power is supplied to the camera through the screen in the roof console, and if you're moving it to the headunit, the headunit will now be supplying the power. To the factory camera it needs to be 6v. I bet if you disconnect the headunit and just try the backup camera with factory screen it will start working again.

 

Is this something I can do.... make stepdown?

Have appointment with him tomorrow morning in 15 degree cold weather.....and dread if I can avoid plus spending $$$$

One more..

If the HU send 12v to the tailgate, but it only need 6v, could this damage the tail camera?

If you are using an iDatalink Maestro the firmware also does the voltage conversion without a need for a separate step down

 

Any thoughts on that last question about damaging camera....?

 

allegedly it COULD, but if you're just turning it on to see if it works and then turning it back off you're probably OK

 

The replacement Rostra came so I plug into harness, hit reverse twice then
“....cussed like a broke pirate with his last dollar...”
Nothing!!!

 

So here’s the update
From Pilar A we had to tap into almost every wire to find the color to the harness by the spare.

Alas, we found them almost two hours later, but still no signal to HU

Tried again, but next round with HU all plugged up, no signal

Long story short, unless you want to hear all 5 hours of testing, solution:

- tap into reverse light from tailgate, and run wire to harness by spare.

Conclusion: the rearview monitor sends the signal to he camera. If you don’t have a rearview Mirror plugged up, no signal is sent to the camera.

The RCA positive is run to the Red in Pillar A
The RCA negative is run to the black and white stripe in pillar A
Then plug into back of HU

The green wire in pillar A is the Reverse signal. tapped and run to the back of HU “Reverse”

 

having the same problem with the same head unit, I have a 12' tundra do you think its the same signal wires for my 12' tundra,...?

 

Probably and almost certain.
My technician found the signal at the reverse light at tailgate.

He ran wires from there to the tailgate camera No problem since.

Cannot say why the signal not picked up from the A Pilar......

 

Okay,.. I tried to find the signal from the mirror camera with no luck I did fine the one 6v positive wire, but all others were 3v, ok will try that,...

Awesome you nailed it followed ur post now I have my back up camera working,.. and I didn't have to tap into the rear tail light signal not saying that's not a way too go as well,..

I have another question since I have the same Head unit,..

Did you get ur AUX & USB port to work with your the head unit, if so HOW did you do it,..?

Another problem with Tundra wiring system, thank you for ur insight and will need to share,...!!!

 

The HU came with its own USB. I used one of the dummy switch to secure, while the sun plugged directly into HU.

The harness may carry signal - I didn’t check.

I have a 2012 tundra with an oem rear view mirror camera that I want to clone to my Kenwood dnx576S head unit. i already installed the idatatalink hardware to use my steering wheel controls. It came with wiring to connect to the camera to the Tundra, but there is no connection coming from the Tundra harness to the idatalink harness. I'm planning to feed the camera RCA signal wire from the OEM camera into the Kenwood's female RCA input to give it the signal, but I'm not sure if I will need to step down for voltage or something...or is it even necessary? The Tundra forums suggest tapping into the camera wiring by removing the A pilar cover on the driver's side. video / camera wires are located in the drivers side A pillar. Red = Center of coax (V+) Grey = Shield of coax (V-) i already tapped into the reverse wire on the passenger side kick panel and the parking lines show on the head unit when I put it in reverse. I wish I had your expertise with this, but clearly, I don't. Any further instructions or information you can provide would be most welcome. Thanks
