Welcome to the Pigeon Pad©! A place that documents my build and also a hangout spot for all wayward Tundras.com folk who want to BS a bit. So stop in and say hi! While you’re at it, swing by the official Pige’ IG page here too. The truck also has its own Instagram now, because what not? @cowtowncavalry is where you can find it.

If you wanna grab some goodies from caliraisedled.com use code WHEELER5 for a special discount

Considering I've been active on the forum now for a few years, I suppose it's time for a "build" thread.

    Intro

I started off with a black 2016 Taco, and hated every bit of the two years I owned it. Plus, getting kicked in the elbow every time I took kiddo anywhere was getting old...
    20180408_120033.jpg
    20180118_171258.jpg
April fools day 2018 I picked up a new SR5 Crewmax 4.6 2wd with a front bench seat and a couple other little things.
    IMG_0374.jpg
I proceeded to throw a few parts at it like an MBRP exhaust, K&N intake, stubby antenna, Huskyliners, color- matched grille surround and bulge, and a bed cover.

    20181027_100632.jpg 20180818_163915.jpg

    Then black Friday came around...
Despite my best efforts and multiple, literal (like out loud) pep talks with myself to not spend money..... I spent money.
But on cool stuff! Baja Designs stuff to be specific. :)
Squadron sport ditch lights and fogs.
    20190110_130553.jpg 20190110_130607.jpg 20190105_141321.jpg
After that I wanted some better shoes, so I took advantage of a B2G2 sale on a set of Cooper Discover RTXs at NTB.
    20190202_181041.jpg
    20190203_102729.jpg

Once I got her looking respectable and just about exactly where I wanted the truck to be, I did something a bit drastic....

    I got rid of it.

By "got rid of it" I mean a salesman caught me wandering around while I was waiting for service, and after some chatting I did a stealthy upgrade.

for your BD ditch lights I suggest a security hardware kit so no one run away with your expensive lights. I just installed one this week end. Bought on ebay.

    Great point!
That's actually an early picture, I ended up getting some spanner bolts from Ace that worked perfect.

    What's your complaint(s) with it?
All my hardware rusted to hell in a span of 6 months, and I had a time getting it on the new truck. It sounds pretty damn good to me though.

Ha, that goofy ass slanted tailpipe kills me too! I took a corner too sharp the other day at the damn thing actually scraped the curb...
I've thought seriously about pulling the whole rear section of pipe off from the muffler back and putting a turndown fitting right on the back of the muffler. It would be like a ghetto budget dump system.

Well, I like the name of the project, and the truck looks cool....but I've always found 2WD completely incomprehensible. I can't even get up my own driveway if I forget to put my Tundra in 4WD.

I'm not really in a place where I need 4wd, but I certainly wanted it. That's why I dumped the 4x2 4.6. Funny thing is I had to use the 4wd a couple days after getting the new truck because I was stuck in some soupy mud in a restaurant overflow parking lot

That's my eventual plan. Either a dirty deeds system, or something custom. I'm sure this MBRP system will rust through soon enough and force my hand. Haha

Thats why I never understand 2WD vehicles, not matter where a person lives there are still going to be situations where 4WD is needed. I mean, even if your just trying to get out onto a highway on dry pavement 4WD helps you get moving rather than burning rubber.

I hear you, and with all my 4x4 vehicles in the past, I distinctly remember using it plenty of times. There were more than a few times I didnt take my 2wd truck somewhere for fear of getting it stuck.

Any of you that talk to me regularly know the hell I've gone through getting my CB installed and working. For technology that hasn't really changed in nearly a century, it sure was a pain in the ass to get working!

The goal here was to have a functioning CB setup in time for the trip to Colorado so @Larmand, @4x4_Angel, @HornFrog, and I could all communicate going down the road.

    My initial setup:

Uniden PC68LTX,Roadpro antenna wire, Astatic mic, and Rago ditch light extension mount.
Not Pictured: Firestick 4' trim-to-tune antenna (courtesy of @Larmand) and Firestick antenna mount
    20190514_142524.jpg 20190515_134327.jpg

All hooked up and on the truck:
    20190527_0852152.jpg 20190518_192309.jpg

This all seemed like a solid set up to me, and the folks I consulted with (mostly @Larmand), yet it would only transmit or receive for a couple dozen feet and then cut out. The SWR meter on the radio barely moved when the mic was keyed up, which is an indication of a problem.

So I started by re-doing my power and ground connections, making sure they are tight, and everything was good. After that I ran a multi-meter to the back of the harness, and the radio had solid power as well as ground, so that wasn't the problem.
Next, I went and replaced the antenna that @Larmand gave me, because he had suspicions that something was off with it since it didn't work great on his truck either. So, I went and got a Firestick 3' with tuneable tip. No difference.
At this point, I'm thinking the radio must just be bad, so I returned it to Amazon, and ran into my local RadioShack and picked up a Midland 5001Z off the shelf. Hooked it up, and the SWR moved a little bit more when I keyed the mic, but I still wasn't picking up any chatter.
So, the very last thing it could POSSIBLY be is the antenna mount/wire. I decide to ditch the ditch light mount :rimshot:, in favor of a 'mirror mount' rigged to the bed rails.

Now that I bought everything twice, I'm thinking this HAS to be it, and I get everything mounted, wire ran, and I'm excited to be at the end of this nightmare. I twist the antenna wire to the mount, and the damn thing breaks apart.
    IMG_20190619_091918_780.jpg

Multiple deep breaths, and even more beers later I have a new cable coming from Amazon. We are T-2 days until the trip to Colorado, so I'm not a very happy camper right meow.

Antenna shows up, gets re-re-ran, and hooked up. BOOM problem solved! I'm picking up chatter from miles away, and had someone answer my mic check. :goingcrazy:

So, here is the final setup:
Midland 5001Z, Astatic mic, Mirror mount installed and grounded to the bed rails, Roadwire cable, Firestick antenna mount, 3' firestick antenna.
    Capture.jpg
    20190619_193522.jpg

TL DR: The Rago ditch mount apparently didnt ground the antenna the way it should've, so the antenna was doing literally nothing. With the antenna mounted and grounded to the bed rail, we are in business!

If anyone wants a Rago ditch light antenna mount, I'll make you a good deal. :D I'd suggest using it for a GoPro or light rather than an antenna though....

Yeah, it's a 'wash every week' color, but I love it. Especially when the sunlight hits the metallic flake just right!

Good move on "getting rid of her". Now for the creepy comment, but by the looks of your house are you in Watauga? Looks similar to mine is the only reason I bring that up.

Ahhh ok, I'm down that way at Snoopy's every month or so to board the pooch when I go out of town for work.

Got a mid-height bed rack on a couple weeks ago.
It's made by @Caliraisedled, look for it available on their site soon :thumbsup:20190926_141250.jpg 20190926_141307.jpg 20190926_141326.jpg
It's a super solid rack, and a prime spot for an RTT
In the meantime I threw an ARB awning and Smittybilt shovel/axe mount:
