Do 1st Gen Tundras have naturally noisy starters?

Hi forum! This is my first post. I love my new-to-me '00 Tundra. I bought it yesterday. My question is about the starter: Jeese that thing is loud! When I turn the key and start the truck, it sounds like a normal noise from a starter, it's just LOUD! I feel like my neighbors 5 houses down can hear my starter/cranking noise. Do you guys think that these 1st gen Tundras just have unusually noisy starter motors or something? Thanks for your input.

    Seems about normal to me.

What I do notice is that it takes longer to start than other vehicles I've owned. Maybe because its a V8? It seems like my subarus start as soon as I touch the ignition, while the tundra has to crank for a full second before its starts.

I’ve never thought it to be loud.

Not louder than any other truck. Quiet actually. Maybe yours has a problem? Post up a video sound bite.

My 02 Corolla was louder than my 02 Tundra. I'd like to hear your starter. It doesn't sound right.

I mean, the V8 purrs like a sex panther but I find it to be just right.

Any chance you could provide contact information for the sex panther? Asking for a friend...

Yep that describes my Tundra too. It's extra-loud and does take a full second of cranking before it fires up. I mean it still starts up in a normal amount of time but I have definitely heard several cars that start up quicker. It's not crazy though, it's probably just the way this engine operates.

I'll try to grab a decent sound byte for you guys so you can hear it too. I think it will be hard to really tell how "loud" it is, since you won't have a frame of reference for the loudness of my particular recording, but yeah I think that's a good idea because if something is very wrong you'll probably be able to tell. Good idea. I'll get that done in the next day or two.

I really love this truck though, and the beefy V8! I also noticed that even with the stock exhaust still on there, when I open the little sliding window into the bed, my camper shell makes the exhaust note bounce around in there and get amplified. Nice V8 sounds through my little window back there, I love that. ;)

LOLOLOL Yes! Someone noticed the Beefy black man-wagon thing! That was just for fun, for someone who is paying attention, which someone was ;) I mean to say that this truck is incredibly beefy and manly, not that I'm looking for beefy black men, lol. 315 lb-ft of torque baby!

Toyota’s all take a little longer to start, Its Because the fuel pump doesn’t prime with key on like other cars. It only pumps when the key is on start or engine running. As for the starter, Toyota truck starters are usually louder

So, w/o looking at the manual this is a manual fuel pump and not electric? If electric, then the pump wiring can be changed for priming the line upon key on switch.

I mean technically you could. But I don’t really see the point. If anything it helps longevity of the engine by giving the engine a short time longer to prime the oil

This could be related to the other thread about the shaft seal thingy. Could be letting extra noise in. :notsure:

That makes sense. If so, newer motors must have a stronger oil pump, or cylinders and rings are made of today's new improved metallurgy or both. Otherwise, all's the same and newer motors will wear out quicker, but to what extent? Just got this trk and need to learn more about it cause I will get things right for the motor. A quick start is nice.

Anyone remember how the motors sounded on start up, if it was quick and if it was quite as OP thinks it could be? That would be a plus to help.

Eh I think the proof is shown with Chevy especially. They start up real quick. But their 4 cylinders and 6s are not long living engines with timing chain issues and what not. Timing chains stretch from oiling issues typically.

The v8s have oil burning issues. But I really blame that on modern 0w-20 oil

A quick start is nice. But what does it really save you? Half a second?

Those from the old hot rod days like the engines to start immediately if they have good compression, and that's what I plan to do with this motor. Two times crank over is ok, but anything thing more sounds like a dog of an engine.

I love the way these things start, I can pick out. A Toyota truck firing up from a mile away! I’m weird like that though, my childhood was surrounded by Toyota trucks so maybe that’s why

Yeah, this old stock exhaust has a nice start up bark and throttle sound to it that the more expensive exhaust systems like Corsa or Borla have. Not redneck loud going no where sound like Magnaflow and all similar lesser quality exhaust. Toyota did this exhaust system right.

From my best mammaries, the truck starts the same now as it did new. Like this... 1,2,3 starts!

Total time less than a full second. Not quiet and not loud.

Now, the newer 1st Gens have a ‘bump’ start we determined in this quest of starter understanding last year.

Wait? Mine has a “bump” start? I didn’t know that... unless it’s a double cab thing
