I think they will only recall if its a safety issue, I think your more likely to see a special service campaign like they did with the AIP failures on the Tundra and Tacoma.

I got lucky. The fix was done under my 90 day warranty and my service writer was able to get the leaking driver side as well as the passenger done at zero cost to me. He even got the $200 deductible waived. The fix took about 4 days as they had to wait on parts. Replaced all the gaskets as they went through the engine and I now have a nice visible beed of the Black Sealant around the cam tower.

After reading a bunch of these posts regarding dealerships it REALLY ticks me off that some are being so DECEITFUL when it comes to these issues. I have been in the industry for 35 years and did begin learning quite a bit about dealerships when I worked for some in the past. ALL ARE NOT THE SAME!!!! Reading some of the responses on here about how some dealers are flat out blowing off customers with the BS about "seeping" is just a flat out lie!!!! They KNOW it's a problem and they KNOW they can fix it to make things right but don't.

The only thing I can HIGHLY suggest any of you do is if one dealership tries to do the blow off, go to another one and see the difference. You WILL see a difference. Some service managers apparently don't have a problem with bending ethics and then there are some that are just HANDS DOWN fantastic guys that like to sleep good at night because they do the right thing on a daily basis. Find the ladder guys and stick with them because they're SOLID family guys with great ethics.

    Peace!

Well, that was easy. I took my truck in yesterday to a local dealership (not the closest dealer but one I don't despise) to see what they'd say about my cam tower leak. They came back and said it was more of seep on the one side and dry on the other. Quoted me $1500 something but I reminded them again my truck was CPO. Said they would call toyota and get back to me. I asked if they could see if I could go ahead and have both sides done since they were tearing it down.

Fast forward to today, they said toyota agreed to cover both sides and I could bring it in Tuesday and drop it off for a couple days. They will also provide me with a loaner.

Honestly, I'm a little nervous about having this done. The seep really doesn't seem to be that big of a deal to me but I don't want it to progressively get worse and then be out of warranty. I also asked if they would replace the oil and they said yes. Hopefully they will especially since I just changed it.

I have a 2010 Limited Crew Max with 81,000 miles when my truck was diagnosed with the dreaded leak. I called Toyota's corporate office at 1-800-331-4331 and spoke to their service people. They gave me a case number to track and told me they would look into it. I got a call back three days later and they dropped the price from $3,000 to $1,200 and told me they would cover half. I probably could have done better but $600 compared to full price is a win in my game. Truck is getting fixed now and they loaned me a TRD Tacoma for the time being. Not bad for just making one phone call. Save your receipts though. They told me if it does become an actual recall in the future, they will refund whatever I spent.

Just for reference, would someone be able to tell me what area to look at to see if I ever have this problem. I have a 2019 but would like to keep an eye on it every now and then to make sure. And if possible pictures would be helpful

I checked my 2015 with only 38000 kilometers, both sides were leaking. The first dealership I took it to said they will look at but if it’s not leaking they would charge me 1 hour labor. The second dealership looked at my pictures and scheduled an appointment to check it out. They ended up having it for about a week. All fixed up now, glad it was still under warranty. If I didn’t check this fourm I wouldn’t have known anything about this problem.

I’m looking at buying a 2015 Tundra CrewMax 5.7 4x4 with 159,000 miles on it. I took some pictures as best I could and hope some of you guys can help me tell if the cam towers are leaking or if this one is in good shape. Any help would be appreciated. 7A3B3FF0-AAED-4816-8AE3-77F7ECC69B27.jpg

    I'm not seeing any leaks. But...a 2015 with 159K miles...:eek2:. Not crazy mileage but a lot for a 2015. My 07 is pushing almost 100 K.

I had a 2014 with the 4.6L V8 and had around 192k trouble-free miles on it. I just can’t justify spending $48,000+ on a new one... they sure hold their value. This one is a 2015 Platinum 4x4, 1-owner, no accidents and they are wanting $24,500.

This Tundras Cam Towers have a THICK bead of gray sealant, way more than most the trucks I’ve seen leak. Looks dry in these photos and there is no black sealant which would typically indicate the Cam Towers have not required a fix due to a prior leak.

Just got my 2016 back from the dealer today. They fixed both sides under warranty after I had them check it last week. Keeping my fingers crossed that it stays problem free.

Are we sure Toyota hasn’t fixed this on newer models? My 2019 appears to have black sealant on the back side of where the cam tower leak usually occurs

I've got about 5K on mine since the fix (completed around 40K), no issues since. I was only able to get the drivers side done since the passenger side was completely dry.

I have a 2011 TRD that I only smelled oil burning, beginning at about 75k. I started noticing drip stains a couple weeks ago at 123K. I called Toyota USA and got the run-around. I took it to local Toyota Dealer 5 days ago. They talked me into changing water pump since we have it torn down to repair both sides of Cam Tower Seals. Looks like I'm all on my own so I plan on joining in on Class Action Suit with Law Firm in Washington DC. (M&R) I doubt this will get any of the cost recouped but it makes me feel better. This decade old problem should have been handled by Toyota in a Service Bulletin at the very least.

That is a good question. I bought my 2019 in November and I currently have 12,500 miles on the clock. Cam tower seals are bone dry. No leaks or seeps at all. Keeping fingers crossed.

Update: 6 days later I finally got my Truck back and $3200.00 lighter in the bank acct. I provided the Paperwork to the Class Action Law Firm M&R in Washington DC, so I'll let y'all know if anything ever comes of it.
