Best Gen Hood wrap? Buy it or have it done?

I want to wrap the middle section of my hood matte black to match my roof.
I want it to go from the cowl by the wipers to the grill.

Are there (Precut) pieces I can buy and slap on my self, Or should I just take it to a shop and have it done?

 

I haven't seen anything pre cut. I have looked some because this is the look I wanted to do eventually. I was looking into using the vinyl tape and doing it myself probably, but I'm kind of a cheap ass. I'd imagine this is a common type of thing for a vinyl shop to do. They probably love that kind of work because it's mostly flat.

 

I could do it myself BUT if the lines on the side are not straight I wont be able to sleep at night.

 

Well and the hood lines aren't very pronounced. I think it would be hard to get perfect but you could always lay it out carefully with marker and a paper with a grid on it I suppose. I understand the not sleeping thing. It sucks knowing something isn't straight.

 

Would Plasti-dip and masking tape work for what you're trying to do?

 

It would work, but the roof of the truck is already wrapped with black vinyl. It wouldn't look the same I don't think.
I'll call a shop and see how much they'll charge for the middle of the hood.

 

Pull the vinyl and do both. I am amazed at all the Plastic Dip options available. Thought it was only black and white colors they provided. They have a wide selection of colors and metallic, as well. They even have a satin toner for reducing gloss.

 

Plasti dip is cool but I'd personally rather have vinyl. I had Plasti dip on some truck parts before and it would start to peel and it was a huge pain to remove or touch up. I guess vinyl is a pain too, but on something mostly flat like a hood or roof I bet the removal would be simple with a heat gun.

 

I did my old ford Cammo green plasti dip came out nice.

 

The lower part of the truck is Plasti dip around the fog lights its starting to peel up.

 

How long has it been since install?

 

Maybe 6 months, But the part that is pealing is on the bottom portion below the fog light on one side. Could have been shitty prep or poor coverage or me driving in the weeds who knows.
I do know plasti dip lasts longer then 6 months.

I'm leaning towards vinyl because the roof is already done . The grill portion Im going to find a grill from a black truck and keep my gold grill. see what that looks like.

The plasti dip is peeling. Looks like my fault poor prep and coverage.
I'd like the center hood and the grill and the plasti dip section I did by the fog lights black matte wrap, like my roof.

 

I would probably pay a tiny shop to do it vinyl, then not sleep at night because they didn't get it straight either.

 

The Plasti dip I had would get rock chips and the bubble and peal from there. I think it's just inherent to the idea of a thin spray on coating like that.

 

Had my hood vinyl done by a local shop. Said it was very easy using cutting tape to get the lines correct. Over a year now and still looks perfect.

Since you want the hood done in vinyl, you should do the bumper as well. Makes sense to do both simultaneously.

 

I've had really mixed results with plasti dip. I would go vinyl as well.

He did my TRD stickers for my bed sides for me.

 

I would bet the toughest part would be getting the vinyl into the shape/size you need. Wrapping the whole hood would be pretty easy, but getting things cutout without a plotter cutter would be tough.

If you can find the shape you want, pre-cut, getting lined up on the hood should be easy. I know the 3m vinyl doesn't stick until pressure is applied, so you can position where needed.

Don’t need to pre cut it. The professional shops use cutting tape. They basically outline the desired shape with cutting tape (tape with threads in it). They then apply the vinyl and then pull the threads to “cut” the vinyl to the desired shape.

 

Did you do the roof yourself? Was it pre.cut?
