i was cleaning my tundra today and noticed a leaf coming out behind this rubber by the door hinge. There was a crazy amount of dirt and leaves in there. How did they even get in there? Anyone else experience this?

@Steve Tundra, All the leaves and everything else gets in from top side. Notice when you have the hood open right there by the spring for hood. I clean mine out once a month. Have you checked you cabin air filter lately? That gets dirty as hell too.:eek2:

Found same in mine just drivers side.Home depot Lowes both have one sided adhesive backed 2" rubber strip that comes in a big role.I closed off that big whole at hood hinge. The rubber has soft give so it will dothe job until someone comes up with better solution.

Wait a minute, just hold on a sec, you mean to tell me that there is a hole in this truck that leaves fall in to?? What the...

Of course they do. They go everywhere. Leaves, spiders, everything else. I’m not trying to be mean spirited, but what’s next? I drove thru rain and now the part of my truck behind my wheels has spots on it???

This is kind of a ridiculous post.

What better solution are you looking for? It's designed to be cleaned out easily. That's why it's rubber and not metal like on most cars/trucks.

I had a nest of fire ants form in all those leaves and dirt. Discovered it while on a trip thankfully they weren't able to get inside the cab of the truck with the door closed

That's a lot of GD leaves and dirt! I have seen this little cubby dirt trap since my 2006 Tundra and now on my 2016 Tundra. Can't believe Toyota would allow a rust trap like this ever since they've had such good publicity with rust this past decade. The only thing I do is hose it out every so often and finger out the leaves. Not many other options that I've found useful.

I disagree. This is a great post that could show someone, likehimself, that did not know about this weird collection area.
Not cleaning it out regularly could lead to rot and rust and plenty of issues. I think this was a helpful and informative post

That grille behind your hood is the located in a low pressure area at the base of the windshield to provide fresh air to cabin HVAC systems. If you park under trees, you are very likely to accumulate leaves, twigs, and other debris in the plenum. The dirt is a little strange unless ants are carrying it in for a nest.

The holes are there at the fenders SPECIFICALLY for allowing debris to wash out of the plenum. I wouldn't stop those holes up with anything. Make sure the fender is draining free, and when you wash the truck, hose out that area and the fender. Leaves and debris left in there will stay wet from rain and car washes, and can rust out the lower fender.

How do you hose out this area in the fender, in front of the door, where the pine needles, in my case, accumulate?

Not at all, if it's an option. I have WAY too many oak trees around my house for that to be an option. I also don't have liners in my front wheel wells so debris and leaves can't accumulate. If they could, I'd spend most of my fall cleaning out my fenders! :crapstorm:

The roots are dying on those trees so it's take them down now or wake up with them in our bedroom one night. I won't miss the leaves but it's gonna be a pain getting the yard rebuilt.

I stand by what I said. If you have trees over your driveway, I don’t need a post explaining everywhere they get into. Have some common sense. But I do appreciate you going back a few weeks just to cuss me. Nice job.
