What do you TOW with your Tundra?

I towed my trailer with a supercharged Tacoma for six years and now have a Tundra. Tacoma is retired. My wife finally conceded we needed a bigger truck for mountain towing as we started camping more.

Towing with the Tundra has been great. What a difference. I originally thought I wanted to eventually supercharge the Tundra, but it has plenty of power for me as is.

 

This is my 17' Leonard conversion, insulated and wired with inverter, stereo, AC, full awning, sink, shower, propane water heater hangs on a screw outside. There's a toilet in the shower but not really designed for a holding tank so in practice I've just been parking near the bathroom. Thinking of removing it now. Still holds two full sized Sportsman ATVs.

 

picked this up this weekend. along with a LOT of extra parts. even with 37lbs in the air bags, the suspension was pissed enough that i could see inside the bed and i can't do that empty with no air in the bags. tundra did awesome as usual

I just got that installed yesterday. I'm lovin' it too!!!! I ordered the BOLT lock cylinder and I hope it fits with the Ridelander lock. BTW, do you have to open the cover to close the tailgate?

 

Nothing, I’m to poor to afford things to tow... Got the tundra because the Tacoma wasn’t big enough for our growing family.. one day I hope to have a nice camper but we have to build a house in a few years as our next order of business

 

No. Tailgate operates without the top being open.

 

I have to keep opening mine. I think the gaskets need to break in.

 

Thanks for the replies. Yes mostly just bounces around a lot, I noticed when towing initially then more all the time. Anyway installed Bilstein 5100 on the rear today and rotated the tires. Took one hour. Fronts look like a project for a Saturday.. Hooked up and headed out. Feels significantly more planted already.

 

Tundra out with Aliner Classic heading to meet the guys for camping. Some of us have been camping for 50 years now. Done a few days ago as we were off the grid.

It's our first camper so we don't know what to really expect but we absolutely love it. We've had no issues with it at all and have maybe used it 10 times now (bought it last year). We've done some fall outings late in the year at some good elevations (10K feet) as well as some hot summer days - everything works like a dream. It's heavy but i just drive slow and extra cautiously.

2019, Crewmax Limited, 2020 Forest River Heritage Glen, 314bud, 39’, 8300lbs dry, 960lbs hitch weight, with an Anderson WDH. I’ve searched all over this thread for travel trailers this long and didn’t have much luck finding any, so I wanted to make a post for anyone out there looking for the info I was.

I’m aware this rig is pushing the limits of the vehicle, not in tow weight, but hitch and total vehicle capacity. This isn’t going to be my every weekend hauler, this is going to be my camp that I tow to a resort, camp, then tow to a parking lot a 100 yards away when not in use. My destination is approximately 2 hrs away, leaving this Thursday. I was extremely nervous about hauling this thing, it’s much larger and heavier than my 21’ boat I’ve been towing for 11 years, so here’s my experience...

I went into this knowing this is a big rig and a 1/2 ton truck, but I wanted a large trailer and the thought of giving up my Tundra for any other 3/4 ton was not an option. I’m on my 3rd Tundra and I’ll never not have one, I love these trucks. They are far superior to any other 1/2 ton. They might not back up your boat for you, or have all the latest technology, but it’s built like a vehicle should be and with quality parts. So I decided that I was going to tow this thing home, with a WDH, approximately 30 min drive, across 30, 55 and 65mph roads. If when I got it home I felt like it was unsafe, I was going to have a friend tow it up with a 3/4 ton, but to be honest, there was nothing on that drive home that made me feel unsafe at all and it was in the rain. I passed a car on a 4 lane highway going up a steep grade, the engine never went into scream mode and there were no white knuckles. This truck is a beast to say the least, it’s built for towing. Now, did I know it was back there? Yes. Did I feel unsafe? No. With the trailer brakes on, did the truck stop with plenty of brake power? Yes. Would I load my truck up, camper full of water and tow this thing, probably not. Did the rear end sag even with the WDH? Yes, but not to the point where I was concerned. Will I be going 75 with the cruise on like I do with the 5000 lb boat? No. I’ll be in the 65 to 70 range tops. I plan to tow this Thursday with nothing in the truck bed, everything in the rear of the camper and probably pretty close to the max cargo capacity of the vehicle, towing 9000 lbs, which is under the max towing capacity. Would I have bought this trailer if I planned on towing this all over? Not sure, I’ll know that when I finish my 2hr drive and post if anyone is interested. My gut feeling is that as long as you don’t overload everything and position things accordingly, Tundra will handle with no issues.

So in conclusion, can you tow a large travel trailer? Yes. Can you be reckless and overload your truck and tow this size? No. If you plan to haul something like this, I would properly load your gear so it’s either on, or behind the trailer axles, a WDH with sway control is a MUST and leave your truck bed empty, because even though it’s a solid truck, it’s still a 1/2 ton. Hope anyone out there looking for what I was finds this useful...be safe everyone.

Pulled this guy almost 900 miles last week coming back from CO. At over 5k lbs, (plus the decked full of recovery gear and tools in the bed) I was super impressed with the Tundra's towing capabilities. I averaged 13 mgp according to the dash. I did also notice the brakes get HOT and steering starts to wobble when braking while going down those long steep grades if not careful.

Towing this 1978 Chevy 3/4 ton from California back to Oklahoma. It’s been in my wife’s family for 3 generations so I’m gonna fixed it up and get it back on the road.

 

Anyone tow a toyhauler that they fit a sxs in? Ready to start looking, but would like real world feedback from other tundra owners. Everyone on the other forums seems to be stuck on the idea you NEED a 4x4 crew cab long bed diesel to tow anything over 20’ lol.

It’s just me, the wife and our sxs, and we don’t need anything fancy. Just didn’t know what to start looking at.

 

I currently need 11’ by 68” but want it closer to 72” wide. No 4 seater I have a yxz1000r

 

Yea that’s excessive. Luckily it’s just me and the lady 99% of the time so I’m thinking there has to be the “unicorn” sub-27’ hauler with just the basics and garage space I need for what I want to pay
