If you have a good relationship with your dealer see if they have a used one you can take on an extended test drive over the weekend and see how you like it.

Yeah basically. Drove at night and found optimal speeds my truck liked to stay at good mpg. My typical city driving in tundra is about 9 and tacoma is 15 at best. But highway makes it nice as long as idiots arent stopping on the on ramp.

Might not be hauling an Airstream anymore, but you still need a big truck to haul all that manliness you have now. You won't be able to fit it into a small truck. Hell, it would probably crush an S10.

It might run you more in gas but that will easily pay for itself and more with all the mainly things you'll be doing.

If you own an AirStream, $1400 a year in fuel costs is a rounding error.

Not to mention the sales tax you already paid on the Tundra ($2200), the depreciation you will pay when you trade (?), plus the money you spent on accessories for the Tundra ($800) the money you will spend on accessories for the Taco ($800) and the taxes you will pay on the Taco (?), etc.

There will never be any cost savings just buyers remorse...here is why.

Toyota changed the Taco engine in the (starting in 2016) from a 4.0L v6 to a 3.5L v6. It has a smaller displacement and naturally makes power at a higher RPM which means (as other have said) it is a dog and downshifts on hills. Go look at the power band and you will see the sweet spot has moved higher a couple hundred RPMs and with the smaller rotating mass, it is just enough to execute poorly. They had it right with the 4.0L. This 3.5L redesign helps Toyota look good for gas mileage but as a consumer, its all about how a vehicle executes, and it gets an “F” in my book. My buddy has a ‘19...it sucks...he had a ‘05 with the 4.0 and he hates the new one. Listen to the others here, there is no savings in gas because you will have to keep your foot in it to get it to go.

The reason I know this? I drove several different vehicles (to include Tacos) as I wanted something smaller as a daily driver. I went with a Golf R after I realized how far off the mark the new Taco executes.

I currently have both an 08 Tacoma extended cab TRD 4x4 V6 with 236k on it and I just bought a new 2019 Tundra CM Limited TRD 4x4, now with 1600 miles on it. The difference in ride and the room oh man the room!! I can fit my wife two kids and two dogs (one being a 90lb pit/great Dane mix) in the truck with room to spare. I love my Tacoma but there is a significant difference in power between the two. It's hard going back to the Tacoma after driving the Tundra.

    OK!

    Keeping Tundra!

My Airstream was great but having to rent a place to get my business back to 100% ramped up expenses temporarily so I'm looking at EVERYTHING to cut costs.

Thanks for redirecting me... Man I thought they upgraded the Tacoma.... I guess they are taking Fords lead and trying to make a smaller engine do more.

I do like the punch it and go of the Tundra with Pedal Commander and pay load so a keeper!

Now I can continue with mods.....:D

Keep the tundra, much more room and power. I like my “old” 2014 limited 4x4, no push button start no fancy tech, I have a budget for gas so MPG’s don’t bother me. I wouldn’t trade it for anything, after it’s paid off ima take a few months to save up and buy a good used 200 series landcruiser.

In a year or two, when your business is back to 100%, and you find yourself with more flexibility, you will be glad you have the Tundra.

The mpg really depends on where you live, hills, mountains, flats, etc. We had a 16 Tacoma and the best we saw was around 19 mpg, we traded up a year later cause the Tacoma drive train is awful and we were planning on getting a bigger camper anyways. I think we average 17mpg in the Tundra maybe more depending on where we go.

As a friend explained to me, once your MPGs are in the teens does it really matter?

I went from a tundra to a taco and now back to a tundra. Tacoma Tranny is a nightmare honestly and I had it for 2.5 years so I know. I had a 2017 TRD OR. Its also SOOOO SMALL inside. Thats what was the worst for me also the small bed. I get 13-14 mpg now vs an avg of 17 with the taco so the gas was no big deal for me. A car seat in the back seat and the passenger has no leg room. Not tall inside either, no headroom.

I can guarantee you its not. I just sold my 2017 TRD OR Tacoma and I averaged 16.8 over many many months. I NEVER saw in the 20's except maybe go 60 mph on a down hill grade. Esp not if you have larger tires or lift.

Don’t do it! I’m 5’8 and after having Tacoma’s for the past 8 years and upgrading to a Tundra, I’ll never to back unless I’m forced to. My buddy bought a 2016 Tacoma a couple weeks ago and I sat in it the other day.... I felt so cramped in it.. the amount you save on gas is pretty minuscule in what you would be giving up.. Tacoma’s are always trying to shift to find the best rpm which gets annoying on longer drives. God forbid you have to pass a slower driver too... just keep it man

May as well chime in as well. Like the others, if you're going 55-60, on a flat highway with no hills, you'll finally hit 20mpgs on the Tacoma. I've had my share of Tacomas both 2nd gen and 3rd gen, auto and manual, 2wd and 4wd. The 3rd gens look good on paper, but aren't so great once you start actually driving them daily. The first hill you hit it'll drop 2 gears and jump up to redline. Put any trailer behind it at all and it'll sit in 4th or 5th gear. By itself it's a decent looking truck but you have to drive it sort of rough just to get any actual decent speed to get going and that kills your mileage.

With the Tundra, I can hit 20-22.........as long as I'm on a flat highway going 60-62. Once I hit traffic or city, it drops like everyone else's does. Go drive one or two or five, but actually drive them not just listen to the sales guy. He/she doesn't give a shit if you hate it when you leave once you signed the papers.

EDIT: oh and the seating sucks in the new Tacos. Think the 2nd gen was bad? Personally the 3rd gens are worse. I've had both Off Road and Sport and they both hurt with high floorboards my knees were too high.

Having ridden in plenty of 2nd and 3rd gens Tacomas I wouldn't consider a 3rd. They look cool but I am not sold on the new powerplants or the reduced headroom and less comfortable seats in the 3rd. In my quest to buy a truck it was discovered that for a good low mile 2nd gen Tacoma I was able to get a newer Tundra for around the same money. After driving one it was a no brainer. Can tow anything that I could ever need to tow with the 5.7. The double cab tundra I ended up with has more interior space and storage than the double cab taco, also has a much larger bed.

Listen to this man. I had a 14 Tundra. Traded it in for a 16 Taco 4x4 off-road. Had to floor it just to make it over the smallest hill. Traded it in 1 month later for a Tundra  lesson learned!

A little off topic, but while the Tacoma has it's fair share of problems mentioned here, I think most of the mid sized trucks are becoming this sort of trend. Smaller engines that have to downshift to do any sort of actual power. My father in law had a 2013 Silverado. He traded that for a new Colorado and after his 3rd or 4th camping trip, he traded it back for a new 16 Silverado while still camping just to make the tow home easier. Said he'd never go back to a mid size again just for that reason.
