Like the title says I am seriously considering a 2019 double cab sr5 4x4 with the sx package. I’m not a first time Toyota owner as I currently own a 2017 Tacoma off road with 26k miles. The dealer is quoting me 35,700 for the truck. They also quoted me 30k for my trade. First question is does this seem like a good deal? This is my first trade swap for a new vehicle. Also they let me take it home for a test drive for the weekend what things should I look for? I’ve driven interstate, stop and go, and country roads to get a feel for it. I love my Tacoma but I really need something bigger and I looked at the domestics and just couldn’t stomach the cheap feel of them. I realize the Tundra sucks gas but I’ve come to accept that as just the price of simplicity and durability. E502B6FE-00BE-486F-A6D7-66F8D3F285D1.jpg

    Is the truck a 5.7 or 4.6?

Sounds like a good deal to me. I have a crewmax so maybe another DC buyer can chime in to confirm.

That seems like a pretty good deal to me. I just helped my Grandpa trade in his 2019 Tacoma for a Tundra. We were originally looking at an sr5 TRD 4x4 and the quote was $41k. He ended up with a limited with TRD package and some extras for $42k. They only gave him $33k for the Tacoma with 6k miles. I say go for it. You will love the extra power from the 5.7.

I don't know what Tacomas go for but $5,700 to move up 2 model years and to a Tundra 5.7L seems like a deal to me.

Thanks guys I mean in my head I was thinking it’s a great deal but I’m new to this game lol. I know I could probably attempt to search but it’s just easier to ask what is a good tire sizes for the 18” wheels on the Tundra? The only thing I don’t like on this truck is the 255 tires look weak and smaller than my Tacoma’s lol. I’m thinking about seeing what discount tire would give me for the ones that are on it.

we traded our 16 dcab sport after 2 years with the tacoma. needed the extra backseat room for the GSP hunting dogs as we dont carry our dogs in the bed due to winters up here (below zero on average).

only thing we miss from the tacoma with the platinum is the under seat storage (which the dcab has), bed storage cubby in the tacoma and slightly better gas mileage.

we avg about 15-16 in the tacoma around city (95%) and we get about 11-12 on the tundra in the same city cycle. in the winter the avg drops down as low as 7-8 mpg due to remote starting the truck.

Try ESP for your under seat storage needs for your CM. They make some great products and highly recommend.

I thought about doing that actually. I’m going back today to talk to them some more and my wife wants to look at a black crew max sr5 they have there as well. She’s worried the double cab will be to small when our two kids get bigger.

I would recommend getting a crew max and you’ll not regret it. It’s not much bigger from an over all truck size but much more room inside for a crew max, especially the back seat.

I would agree. I do a lot of hunting, fishing and camping with my truck. I’ve never regret the loss of bed space for extra cab space. There’s other ways to get around having a shorter bed like: put your tailgate down for longer items, get a bed extender or a camper shell. I’m not familiar with any products or solutions that help with providing temporary extra cab space. But to each their own.

Thanks for all the input. I checked with the dealership and the crew max is available so we will give it a good look when we get there. Hopefully they will be as willing to deal on a crewmax as they are this double cab!

I have 3 girls all in car seats. Would have been tight in a double cab. I have the crew max and there is loads of room. I use my bed a lot and not one time have I wished to have a longer bed. My seat is all the way back and my six year old still cant kick my seat like she loved to do in my tacoma

I got a pretty well loaded Crewmax trd offroad 5.7L 4x4, with parking sensors, 38 gallon fuel tank etc... 39,900 negotiated out the door (before trade) last August and got them to throw in the TRD Dual exhaust too. Check the manufactured date inside the drivers side door jamb on trucks in negotiation....a lot of these things have been sitting for 6+ months. Mine had been sitting for almost a year!!! New car sales are hurting where I am right now and Tundra was a slow seller to begin with....you have the upper hand. Whatever number they offer as their final, I'd counter 1k less and walk out if they dont accept. Bet they call you the next day if not chase you down as you're driving off the lot.

Also do you ever plan to Tow anything? Have you dabbled with the idea of buying a camper or Travel Trailer in the future? Because we have started going down that road and I'm finding the Tundra really suffers from poor tongue weight /payload capacity and it's way too easy to put this truck over capacity.

Wow that’s a great deal thanks for the advice I never thought of checking the door jamb! We are talking a travel trailer in the next 3-4 years the ones we like are hanging around 6000lbs. I have read concerns over the payload capacity but my gosh the other domestic brand trucks just honestly don’t compare in quality. The ram has a super nice interior but I know at least 5 people personally that have lost the transmission before 100k and I just can’t deal with that. And the ford and Chevy feel cheap as crap on the inside. I’m gonna push for at least 37k on this crewmax and see what they do. It’s an sr5 with the upgrade package and 4x4 with the 5.7.

Man i have been there and we WERE looking at trailers in the 4000lb dry weight range. We rented some. Now the wife likes the bigger 6000lb dry weight trailers. And we are running out of tongue weight limits with the trailers she is liking ....once loaded we are talking 7500 to 8000lbs. That's not killing towing capacity but it is killing the hitch weight and pushing truck beyond its limits there. Also these gassers really just suck the fuel down when towing even a light travel trailer I'm getting 8 to 9mpg. Guys with F250s, Duramax, etc are getting a much more comfortable towing experience and better gas mileage. Just really need to consider your future when you buy. Unfortunately quality doesnt make up for lack of towing/payload ratings. There are plenty of guys i know driving big diesel domestics without issue so i take the anecdotal horror stories with a grain of salt. You can always negotiate in an extended warranty if you keep a truck beyond the base warranty period and you're concerned...which will likely be cheaper than buying the tundra then realizing you need more truck 2 or 3 years from now and have to trade it.

Go for the CrewMax. Put it in "Beast Mode".
Chevy lost me when they moved to China and Mexico. Tundras are made in Texas.

Yeah towing with a gas anything is awful my dad has an older gas Sierra 2500 and he’s lucky to hit 10. I’ve toyed with the idea of diesel I’ve just never owned one to know what it’s like to live with on a daily basis

The 5.7 is rated to 10k. 6k should be a walk in the park.

Yes, true but the concerns some are posting are in regards to tongue weight and overal payload numbers. For example, my trucks door sticker says my payload is 1240 lbs. By the time I start adding passengers and gear, even the lightest of trailers doesnt leave you much to play with.

This exactly is the issue. Pulling is not the problem. Loading the truck and handling payload is the issue. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do to change those numbers, no matter how many aftermarket mods you add to the truck to assist in towing ...the legal capacity numbers remain.
