2018 1794. Going to paint the front lower tow hooks, but all the research I have done shows bolt torque spect at 43, 63, and 83 ft. lbs. Can anyone provide the CORRECT specs please? I would assume since since the tow bar bolts are 84 ft. lbs, the tow hook bolts should be about the same?

I think I found the answer. 65 ft. lbs in case anyone needs the correct torque.

The TRD Pro skid plate installation instructions say to remove and reinstall the tow hooks. This doc lists the torque as 43 ft-lbf - this is what I used when I painted my tow hooks.

Thanks. Thats what I mean. I'll go with 43 since the skid plate instructions advised it. Thanks! I'll copy @Roman in this, he should know!

I would not be surprised if Toyota had different documents with different torque settings - 43 does seem a bit low.

Toyota has a spec sheet for the bolts. If the bolts show an 11 on them that means something like 116 ft lbs. google Toyota Standard Bolt Torque Specifications

I read 65lbft quite a bit. So they got that and a little blue LT.

Now that’s good n tight! Read the chart. If the bolt is 10mm diameter it’s 64lbft, if 12mm diameter then it’s 116lbft. Unless it’s a flange bolt, then it’s more.

Different size/class bolts have different torque values. Read the head markings and measure the thread diameter (mm), and I'll be able to tell you Toyota's specified torque value.

    To much to list:)
If you have a TRD skid Plate it has the specs in the directions and it states replace the four bolts for the tow hooks and torque to 43 ft lb. those directions were with my TRD skid plate With the red TRD on the plate for my truck.

Yea, I read that one as well with a raised eyebrow. Those are good sized bolts and was at or past 43lbft with a standard 1/2” dr ratchet without trying.

    The highest strength class bolt is 11T. Standard bolt chart lists 11T in 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm in either standard hex head or flange head. Torque values for 8, 10, 12 standard hex head is 31, 64, and 116 ft-lb respectively. Torque values for 8, 10, 12 flange head bolts are slightly higher: 35, 72, 130 ft-lb respectively. For comparison, 8mm ~ 5/16", 10mm ~> 3/8", 12mm ~< 1/2".

11 on the head, 12mm diameter and I believe it’s a flange bolt with a washer under the head.

The 43 ft-lb spec in the skid plate instructions must be for the skid plate bolts.

Whoever wrote the text for the instructions must have been confused about torque values if the tow hook bolts are 11T 12mm. (As in...What's a ft-lb?)

Edit: The head markings ARE IMPORTANT. Class 11T is stronger than US Grade 8. If a metric bolt is only class 4T or 5T, then that 43 ft-lb torque would make sense on a 12mm bolt.

The instructions are actually Toyota Official instructions...

Well, if they're "Official Instructions", I would certainly do exactly what they say...even if it makes no sense from an engineering perspective. If 11T fasteners in a skid plate application are torqued to full torque, I expect the tapped holes they are going into will be be stripped.

Edit: Toyota standard bolt specs in the SRM call for 130 ft-lbf on a 12mm 11T flanged head hex bolt.

The five skid plate bolts are only 21 ft.lbs. One of the dealers I had it serviced at stripped one of them out doing an oil change and I didn't know until several oil changes later. Of course none of them would take responsibility for it.

Good to see that the new TRD one has the access door on it now so you don't have to take it off every time, same as the RCI one I just installed.

None that I found. I went to 43 on my 2019. Bolt had a "11" on it and it was a 17mm head for the socket.

I figure I can always torque them tighter if needed or someone comes up with the one and done number.

The manual that came with my Draw Tite front receiver says 42 ft/lb, but they also list the bolts as being 17mm when they are, in fact, 19mm. They are stamped 8.8. The majority of opinions on this most ambiguous topic seem to center on 65-68 ft/lb, however, I do like 6 Ugga Duggas.

Looks like you can torque it from 48 to 97 ft lbs with target torque being 65.
