I like making build threads on forums, at a minimum to help keep some type of log on the history of the truck while I have it and figured may as well start one for the Tundra.

It's a 2008 Double Cab 5.7 4x4 that I bought in mid-2017 with 185k miles on it. I bought it specifically since I needed a truck to haul my upcoming Ultra4 car around, plus would be nice to have something a bit more modern and reliable than my other vehicles. As of this post it just hit 215k miles, and I just had my very first issue with it with the starter going out the other day. It's a pretty stock truck overall and meant to stay that way since I have other toys to beat on, so this thread probably won't be very exciting.

    Current "Mods":
TRD Supercharger (Since 214k, blower full rebuild @ 240k)
    Custom Modular 2.0 Pulley (@ 279k)
    Walbro 450 Ti Fuel Pump (@ 252k)
    HP Tuners (@ 252k)
    Prospeed 750cc Injectors (@280k)
    Innovate AFR/Boost Gauge
    Magnaflow Cat-Back Exhaust
    Certified Transmission Stage 2 Trans (@ 240k)
    Revolution 5.29 Gears (@ 242k)
Powertrax Grip Pro LSD (@ 242k)
    Radium Catch Can (@ 270k)

    King 2.5 Resi w/Adjuster Coilovers @ 3"
    Camburg Balljoint UCAs
King 2.5 Resi w/Adjusters and Extended Shackles @ ~3" Lift
    Baja Design Fog Lights
    Morimoto XB Headlights
    Air Lift Bags
    EBC Brakes (@ 265k)
35s, LineX, Debadge, etc. small things

A few weeks after having it, the first big trip I did to Moab with what evolved into my racecar build. This picture ended up winning me the Eibach Lifted Truck Giveaway in fact, and I had totally forgotten I had applied for it until I got some emails later that year and by the end of the year the truck had Eibach's coilover/shock package installed which was an AMAZING upgrade over the shitty spacer lift I bought it with. Can't thank Eibach enough for everything, the ride quality was amazing I thought and I wasn't paid to say that.

After installing the Eibach lift and simultaneously installing 35s (285/75r18 iirc). Made the truck look a ton better obviously.

Skip ahead more to King of the Hammers 2018 in February and the truck now has an Air Lift rear bag setup with their wireless controller. I drove from Colorado out to California towing my 5500lb racecar, a set of 40s, a full toolbox/sleeping quarters, and essentially every tool, jerry can, and random item I had in my possession. I would guess the total weight was 10k+. This race was essentially what drove me to buy the truck, and it performed amazingly!

My girlfriend and I ended up scouting out places to live on the way back from Hammers, and ended up moving to Southern Utah a few weeks later. This was the first wheeling trip out with the racecar. Physically no changes aside from debadging everything.

Sunset poser shot with what was the daily before the Tundra, my 1977 FJ40:

Don't really have any pictures from mid-2018 until this year. I ended up (for the wrong reasons) cutting up the racecar to build a new one, so didn't end up racing KOH but instead ran the pits and helped build a car for my buddy. I ended up driving down to Phoenix with the trailer, was there for about a week, then towed the racecar to Hammers again, and then took it back to my shop where I hung onto it until a tow company took it to Florida. So this was the KOH 2019 setup I hauled, considerably lighter than before haha

Not much pictures since then. I knew a guy who was selling some King 2.5 reservoir coilovers with compression adjusters with less than 5000 miles on them, and ended up trading my old 37s off the racecar to him. I couldn't even get any offers on the tires, so essentially got free $1700 shocks or something insane. I threw them on really fast, decided I may as well get uppers (because why not) so got some Camburg ball joint uppers--my girlfriend has Camburg uniball uppers on her 4th gen 4runner and they're awesome but squeak like no other, and I really like them besides that so the ball joint option is working out great so far. I also went and cut up the rear stock shackles and beefed them up and extended them like 6-7" to lift the rear a bit. Essentially, so far I haven't paid full price for really any mods on the truck (besides the uppers) and I need new rear leafs BAD but I hate block lifts and I don't feel like shelling out $700 for new lifts just yet, so the rear shackles being extended is a temporary fix...

I then picked up a TRD Supercharger with CLAIMED 10,000 miles or something, and got that whole setup for $3000.

That was a total nightmare and pain in the ass to deal with. Overall it came with most of the stuff needed, but I ended up getting the Aeromotive 340LPH fuel pump from URD plus an Innovate OLED AFR/Boost gauge which I installed before even touching the blower. Both those went in great, and the only big hiccup with the blower was the oil cooler hardlines didn't come from the seller, so I cut up the stock lines and fabricated them into the shape I wanted and made some brackets, etc. etc. I also didn't have a tune, so found a local shop (the Toyota dealer never knew what I was talking about when I asked them) and the owner had just bought some fancy ass tool but didn't know how to use it. So I spent about 3 hours parked in his shop, using his tools and downloading techstream and everything and figuring out how to get his tool and my laptop to talk to the truck and then was able to flash the ECU myself and change some settings (seat belt, door chime, etc.) and then he said it was all free if I wrote down how I did it for him! So that was great.

Here's my Innovate gauge with a 6061 faceplate I machined, I moved the Tow/Haul button under the steering wheel to a blank slot, and everything else here (brake controller, switches) was blank so worked out great for the gauge.

That essentially takes us to today. The starter went out on the truck (first issue I've ever had at 215k), a new starter is sitting on my desk, and I also have a new supercharger coupler as well as a URD smaller pulley upgrade ready for the truck. I am going to get it dyno tuned with HP Tuners soon, and figured if I'm gonna get it dyno tuned may as well do any supercharger upgrades I want. I calculated the lowest elevation I'm usually at (2000ft) and with the smaller pulley, theoretically my manifold pressure will be about the same as a stock supercharger at sea level---so my figuring is this shouldn't stress the truck any more than a stock sea level supercharged Tundra would (again, reliability is paramount). I've read issues with the smaller pulley, reliability concerns, etc. but since I'm at altitude that shouldn't be an issue except when I drive to Nevada, California, etc. and then just stay out of the higher boost levels.

And now we're up to date. Hopefully the truck is back together this weekend, I need to get another project out of the shop first and then pull it in. After that we're taking it camping next weekend, and then theoretically soon after that will be the dyno sessions. Future changes are to replace the shitty Air Ride setup with something more plush, upgrade the rear to matching Kings, and get new rear springs, etc. etc.

Here's a few photos, this was my life in 2017. Started as a 1996 FZJ80 and ended up bound for the 4500 class. It wasn't anything particularly special, and the first "serious" build I did. 37s, auto front, mini spool rear, TR beadlocks, 14" 2.5 coilovers and 14" triple bypasses and 2.0x2" hydros at every corner, 3 link front, 32gal fuel cell, PRP seats/harnesses, PCI comms/air, Baja Designs, Eibach springs, etc.

I made it almost one of two laps, I ended up rolling going up the last hill right before main pit and the shock load on the front axle destroyed the ring gear ending the race. Made it about 77 miles as I recall, and then ended up running the truck in 2WD for a long time before cutting it up. It was a great truck and a lot of fun and a lot learned, but it was really heavy, slow, and just a pig. My plan was to take its parts and throw them on a tube chassis and have a "more competitive" rig, well that's been kind of snowballing. I'm hoping my new Ultra4 will be done this year (hopefully October....)

RockLizard chassis (though extremely modified at this point), sterling 10.5, dana 60, trailing arms, 4 link front, full hydro, 14" coilover/bypass/hydro front setup, 14"/18" coilover/bypass/hydro rear setup, 6.0 LQ4 that I'm building for probably just 500hp to start, 4L80, 2 speed Atlas showing up in a week and a half (fingers crossed), 40s, TR beadlocks, etc. etc. Only really the seats and maybe the fuel cell will be carried over from the last build. This one will weigh probably 30-40% LESS and have around 2.5x the horsepower and stronger components. Nothing crazy by race standards, but it'll be a huge step up for me, and the reason the Tundra got boosted to tow it up the mountains.

That'd be awesome! I'd like to make it out to Hammers ideally once before KOH (assuming I race next year) and get some miles on the new racecar, but we'll see. Also would like to do a Baja race next year, but that's a big stretch. Always nice to have support when so far from home, and I don't know very many people in California.

Sorry, forgot to mention that. I got it installed at the beginning of May, and only have about 1000 miles on it so far (installed at 214k).

Thanks man! It handled the 80 great! I'd like to get a rear sway bar at some point, for instance going down through Vail at 75-80 through the corners and bumps of the bridges felt a little unsettling at times. As far as power it was always rock solid, steep hills obviously slowed it down but never to a crawl (though I drive pretty fast and would push it, not like floored but didn't have any issue bumping into the 3XXXrpm). I usually could maintain 80+ in 5th gear with the 35s, 6th was pretty rare unless it was totally flat with no headwind. I would have no issue towing that load with the truck totally stock on 35s, and that was my plan but the supercharger was so cheap I had to jump on it, otherwise I had no plans on ever boosting it. I've towed from where I lived in Colorado (mountains above Boulder) up through Ft Collins/Laramie and across Wyoming to Utah and back, CO to CA, all over Utah, etc. Stock truck on 35s with a single (shittily) braked axle and the 80 and was totally happy.

Quick question, I was told unanimously that the TRD airbox and filter are a “must stay” with the Supercharger. So as of now I have a DD TRD 3” racing exhaust but have no additional intake to make any kind of change. How did u pull it off? Any hiccups?

So the Air Raid came on the truck when I bought it, and then when I bought the supercharger (used) it didn't come with the TRD intake. It wasn't as big a deal as I thought it'd be, I had to cut a ton off of the Air Raid tube, like 7-8" off the intake end (you can see just the 'D' is left right next to the coupler/clamp). However the intake end slopes pretty gradually, so I could just tighten the clamp down a bit and squish the coupler down a bit and it was fine. I was debating doubling couplers up (like a little adapter strip) but it was close enough a filler piece wouldn't fit, so tightening it down a bit more than normal worked fine. The Air Raid coupler has 3 inserts in it that bolt to a heat shield, the new angle of the intake though wouldn't let the heat shield line up with the coupler anymore, so I just left it off for now. I plan to add the heat shield back in and rework it a bit, mostly just as a splash guard.

So that's the only two "issues", the heat shield can't just bolt right up without a little tweaking and you just need to cut the Air Raid tube back (I used a band saw).

Nope, I just sent it. Would a comp test be nice? Sure. But to be honest I was just lazy, and this engine is known to be a work horse (and I wouldn't consider 2xx,xxx to be that high of mileage on really any Toyota). So it might sound over confident or cocky, but the truck felt fine so I didn't feel the need to confirm to myself the engine was fine. I've had engines blow head gaskets, I've even installed head gaskets wrong before, and there was no indication in the 30k I've owned the truck that I should be worried about anything.

My girlfriend's v8 4th gen 4runner has 270k, so similar to yours (except is 4 years older) and I wouldn't hesitate to boost it--I've even asked her when 2uz superchargers pop up and she doesn't want one (mainly doesn't want to run premium). That engine has never had an issue, I could boost it tomorrow without running any diagnostics and be 100% confident in it. Again, would check compression be nice? Sure, but the spark plugs look good, the oil always looks good, it hasn't overheated, the coolant level doesn't change, it runs and starts fine... There is no indication in her engine, or my 5.7, that there is an issue. And so you check compression, unless a cylinder is totally dead (which you'd know from spark plugs, how it ran and sounded, etc.) then worst case you're a little low on one cylinder. That could be a ton of reasons, but at 285k for all you know the compression dropped in a cylinder at 80k and you just never knew, and rebuilding the engine to fix one little drop in compression isn't worth it (for me) anyways since if you trust your engine and it hasn't acted weird then there's probably not a critical issue.

Also I did lots of research into reliability, how long people have had superchargers, amount of boost, how they treat them, gauges, tunes, etc. before I installed mine. My conclusion was that longevity is pretty directly related to how you run the truck (obviously). Lots of guys with boost have issues, lots of guys with boost also drag race. From all my research I was also completely against running any "off the shelf" tune that wasn't from Toyota themselves. DAP Tune wouldn't do it, Bullydog is utter shit and there are dozens of stories of BD messing up air fuel ratio, timing, just flat doing nothing, etc. OrangeVirus is new to the market and unimpressive. The only tune I planned to do was either the stock TRD for a little bit (because it's very conservative and runs rich to be "safe" plus is released by Toyota) or, ideally, get it tuned with a HP Tuner on a dyno because then the tune is specific to my truck, not a generic boxed tune. Additionally saw people who had issues and others blamed it on high boost, so when I decided to run a smaller pulley it was because my manifold pressure would not be any higher than a stock supercharger (at sea level) so I felt that would be safe. Reliability is paramount for me, and I did a lot of research into how to keep the truck reliable, especially since most people have a supercharger at really low miles (like tops 150k). I also made sure to install my AFR gauge before the blower so i could monitor everything before hand to have a baseline of what to expect. A lot of people install blowers with no gauges so don't even know if there is an issue, I wanted to make sure I had as much information before the blower and after as reference points so I would know instantly if something is wrong (additionally did the larger Aeromotive fuel pump, ran that for awhile beforehand, etc). So taking everything into account, I know my engine, I know how to setup the ECU to stay safe, I know what safe boost levels are, and I don't plan to sit there at wide open throttle for seconds or minutes racing----that all lead me to think there's zero issue installing a blower at 200k+. If the truck had 300k, or 400k, and it ran fine I would still do it.

Sorry for the long response, but in summary, if you pay attention to how your truck is running and it seems fine right now, I would put a blower on. Now, if you're not that mechanically inclined and don't really pay attention to how the truck runs and don't really notice little things (brakes warped, alignment, vibrations, etc.) then it's probably a good idea. Just a matter of how in-tune with the engine you are and how much confidence you have. My hobby is wrenching and I pay close attention to things like that, so I trusted the engine without even popping the hood, how you feel depends on you. ANYWAYS, that was really long winded, but my point is I put a lot of thought and research into higher mileage Tundras and installing a blower, and concluded if you're smart then there shouldn't be an issue--hopefully that idea is correct and this beast is still chugging at 500k haha.

I appreciate the detailed response, I am not drag racing my truck and I really don't like breaking traction (spinning tires) so the SC would work for me.

The '07 I purchased came with zero service records, nothing on CarFax - nothing in Toyota's data base except for a stereo swap at 1200 miles. My extended test drive confirmed the engine and transmission were fine, I wasn't over confident or cocky - just experienced and in tune with my vehicles.

Speaking of tunes, I am happy to hear that you are using the TRD tune and I would like to hear more about any HP tune you end up with.

    Thank you.

Very interesting, yea I figured if I changed the intake and had a pipe either made or modified one intend that it wouldn’t run right and it would be a instant cel lights (in philly we have emissions). Thanks

So far I've had one CEL in the 1000 miles I've had the supercharger and it was for airflow out of range or something. The exhaust is stock as far as I know, plus the Air Raid and then with the latest TRD tune. I cleared the code and it hasn't come back, and it was a pretty random occurrence just driving through a neighborhood. I'd be surprised if the intake plus what you have would throw a CEL, but I'm no expert.

Was gone the past week for an impromptu work trip, so finally got the starter swapped out today. Did the lifting the engine technique vs pulling the manifold, and besides sacrificing the interior heat shield since it was a bitch everything was pretty straightforward. 215k on the original starter, not bad I guess. Also heard that the matching set for my front Kings (2.5 resi with adjusters) should be up for sale in the next week or so, will probably grab those and then get some new leafs and shackles and maybe different air bags and go through and redo the whole rear suspension. Not sure when I'll get around to the smaller pulley and coupler, probably not until July since I have a 4Runner I need to finish up in the next two weeks.

Stoked to have the Tundra running again, don't realize how much you use a truck bed until you don't have one haha

Hard to remove or install pulley solution:

I was going to make a new thread, but seemed like a waste of a thread when most boosted people don't really do their own work, so maybe if someone like me searches in the future they'll find this post.

My blower pulley wouldn't come off to the point I was block shearing the pulley itself, even with heating the shit out of the pulley. After doing this twice I made a two piece backing plate and welded it together behind the pulley. The idea being the backing plate is far stiffer and stronger than the lip of the pulley, so while not shearing itself it would distribute load all around the pulley. And just like that it popped the pulley right off! Additionally, people use this jank ass looking tool from URD to install pulleys. I just threw the whole snout on my HF press and put a block (in this case just a socket adapter) under the shaft (so the three prongs that go into the coupler aren't touching anything) and it pressed right on easily. Hopefully someone finds this useful, since I read a lot before doing this and found it hilarious that even companies that do this routinely have weird specialty tools or use tricks that aren't even needed. If you have a welder and a cut off wheel, and any size press (or bottle jack for that matter) then removing and installing the pulley should be a breeze.

You can't complete a full circle, at least with the pieces I made so I shortened one of them before welding. This is 1/4" steel with a 1/2" lip-- ID is 2.13" and OD is 3.13"

Truck has 217,344 miles on it. Today I finished swapping a new supercharger coupler, new belt, new tensioner, and new URD supercharger pulley onto the truck. Did a few runs up and down the road, the highest my digital gauge hit was 5.7psi (I'm at altitude) which is marginally higher than before--I think I hit 5.4-5.5psi with the stock pulley. I must admit I'm not surprised at the lack of additional boost from the smaller pulley---if anything I'm surprised it made ANY difference. The new pulley is 2.345" vs 2.45", which is less than a 5% diameter change. Not sure how people claim to get 1.5-2psi more at sea level, I'd be amazed if it made 1psi more at sea level. Worth $150? Unless something changes I'd say with confidence not worth it. But I was in there anyways so may as well.

I still need to change the ATF out, I'll do that this weekend. Maybe I can finally get around to dyno tuning it next week.

Also a few weeks ago I picked up the matching rear Kings to my front. 2.5" resis with compression adjusters. You can check out my sick zip tie job since I'm lazy. Got them for $600, they feel pretty tits.

I also ordered some Baja Designs fog lights. Which that and the dyno will wrap up any tweaks for the foreseeable future.

218,300 miles. Climate blower fan went out, replaced it Friday morning before driving up to SLC to pick up some tires and stuff. Got the BD fog lights in.

Brakes had also gotten warped, and after spending about 3 minutes looking around just said fuck it and got some drilled and slotted powerstop rotors/pads and just got those on and broken in.

Still need to dyno it. Still notice absolutely zero difference with the smaller pulley. Truck is running fine but seems (arguably) richer than "normal", doesn't need much gas to make it drop the AFR to 13 or less. It'll go into the 11s without hitting boost even which seems weird to me but it sounds and runs fine so not too worried.

Here's a picture of the tires I got since there's nothing else to post for awhile.
