Kayak rack

I searched the forum with little results on installing a kayak rack on a Tundra with the track system. Majority of racks either mount with bolts through the bed rails (drilled holes) or clamps. The clamps I'm finding on Amazon to mount the racks without drilling, all seem to be for trucks without the track. Anyone have experience with this?

I don't have any experience with pre-built racks, but I do have the OEM drop in bed liner. I run 2 2x4's in the slots provided, then a bed extender for the longer kayaks. Works pretty well and can fit 2 kayaks. Only downside is that you have to keep your tailgate down.

 

I struggled with a kayak rack system for a while before I bought my Tundra. I wanted something that puts the boats over the bed and is easily removed.

I ended up doing a Yakima system with a single roof-mounted cross bar (can be removed, no drilling) and the goal-post bed extender. The bed extender is height-adjustable so it can be a bed height, bed rail height, or cab height. It was pricey, but well-built and will also work to haul lumbar and building materials. Here's a pic of my Father's '16 double cab with 12' boats on it.

 

The stock Yakima and Thule racks were not acceptable to me. Neither used the rails, and the front of the bed sides had no place for the stock mounting clamps to bite. I am trying this setup turning the J hooks inside and grabbing the stock cleats in the rail system for the front mounts. I removed the big plastic nuts and replaced with nyloc nuts and washers. I would bet this reduced the 300 pound rack rating by half, but my 2 kayaks are way under 100 pounds combined.

I couldn't find a bed rack that would work with a tonneau cover, which is why I went with the Yakima system. I'm pretty impress with it, the bar on the roof is quiet and everything is sturdy and well-built.

I had my eye on some of the racks from US Rack, which mount to the stake pocket holes without any drilling, but they aren't easily removable.

I was looking at the Max Modular system to add to my Diamondback cover. I think it uses the factory rail system to mount.

 

I used the existing T-bolt in the existing rails for the front bar. I just bought a nut and washer to replace the big black knobs. The back rack used the stock mount facing the bed. It’s just that the front of the bed balloons out leaving the rails as the only far forward mounting point.
I got the towers and crossbars as a set for $175. New, they’d be $650 with our sales tax.
