Thanks, I passed it. So I got my CCNA/CCENT renewed and CCNA wifi certs (just waiting on Cisco to confirm the score).
I was wondering if anyone else had done the prep test and taken the test. I sat down very confident and the first question scared the hell out of me because it had terms that were not in the prep test stuff. When I did CCNA the prep test was pretty close, sure some verbiage was changed and they had some questions that were worded different but these questions were totally alien to me.
I've been doing Cisco wifi for 4 years now so I have a lot of experience T/S and deploying but some of the theory and background negotiation stuff you don't really deal with in the real world.
I was just wondering if anyone else had the same experience with the prep test and actual test.

Long time ccnp here. Cisco's exams are both challenging and bullshit at the same time. You won't pass unless you really know your stuff, but some of the questions are so poorly worded or flat out wrong. Sadly the exams are farmed out to a low bid contractor. Congratulations on your new cert. Keep improving your skills and get paid!

Thanks, I was shocked with some of the questions, how do you test about Cisco Wifi and now have one question about CAPWAP?

I agree, their cert path is as bad as the Smartnet licensing crap we're dealing with. They made us buy a VM license for our ISE 2.2 deployment, one license per deployment which was counter to what we were told when we went Virtual instead of appliance based. Licenses are as much as an appliance would have been. So we bought the license, went to install it on our ISE and it would not go. Took a month for them to admit we didn't need the VM license because the version we had doesn't have that license model build in. Will have to update to 2.4 eventually, first tac case we raise that'll be the first thing they tell us. We might as well bow down to them, they got us by the short hairs. We're a 600+ site global group and fully cisco house. To retool to Aruba or some other platform would be out of the question. But who knows, might be able to save the group some money.

I think I'm going with CCNP Routing and Switching next. Not sure i'll go up to CCIE, I understand you have to sit for an interview.

Cisco is so well respected and any course achieved will have life long rewards. Resume food for sure! Again, Kudos!

IMO...certifications are a joke. They intentionally try to make you fail just so they can collect more money . I have worked with certified developers that could not code themselves out of a paper bag.

I saw a young gal in there taking a CompTia A+ cert test. I wish I could have told her not to waste time and money. Every job interview I had when I mentioned A+ they just responded with a "What?".

If my employer were not paying for this I wouldn't have done it, I can assure you that. I totally agree with ya, just because someone has a cert don't mean they know what they are doing. We had this cat that had some security cert and he took over the security group, we had to explain to him so many basic functions it wasn't funny. He left soon after.

Meh, I agree for programming. How can you even certify such a broad skillset/way of thinking. Cisco certs are legit for what they are. A baseline of knowledge needed to be effective with Cisco networks. You still need to add in logic, and reason, and troubleshooting skills, and people skills, to add up to a quality engineer.

Don't know where you work now, but DoD has the biggest best networks, and will pay a premium for the right combo of skills and certs.

I'm no Cisco expert, but we use a ton of their hardware and services at work. Cisco is good stuff, but our middleman/go-between agency is a total joke.

Closest DoD for me is Fort Gordon.
I'm pretty safe where I'm at. Money is good, could be better but that's one of the reasons I got the cert. My boss is 1500 miles away and he doesn't mess with me. He's more my peer than my boss. His boss is in the UK. I come and go as I please and I get called in when no one else can fix it, which feels good. That being said I don't think I can handle working in a control environment like the DoD.

I totally get why the test are hard and the questions are worded the way they are. They don't want people coming in and just doing the prep test and passing. Reason i brought this up is when I did CCNA the prep test was helpful, the questions on the real test were similar to the prep test, you had different wording that could throw you to a different answer. This thing I took yesterday had nothing that was in the prep test.

I was just wondering if it's going to be like that for CCNP stuff.

I wouldn't say CISCO tests are hard if you've read the material and done labs and know why something is the way that it is. It's been awhile since I've taken any test or done labs but I don't remember them trying to trick you; it was very matter of fact and concise. You have this network, with this many hosts, you need to setup vlans, configure routes, etc.

Taking a SANS class now and that's a whole nother' beast. A very expensive beast.

I had my CCNA years ago and let it expire. IAT II doesn't require it. I do have Sec+, like it was said earlier its a money mill. I used 3 sources to study and I felt like I was going to crush the Sec+ test. It damn near crushed me. I think my first 10 questions were beta questions. I passed on the first go but still, its like they intentionally set it up for you to fail so you need to pay for a retest.

A+ a waste? Huh? I'm canvassing new jobs for my upcoming move and they are all requiring A+. I have A+, Net+ and Sec+. I used A+ to transition my career from accounting to IT. Each new cert, I was able to get a new, more fulfilling and higher paying position. Certs worked for me. I'm gonna continue doing them.

Fantastic , glad you're working with people who know what it is. Like I said, everyone I interviewed with had no clue what CompTia A+ was.

I've been lucky and always had employers that pick up the bill on my SANS courses, but there's also an option to serve as a course moderator and get a STEEP discount... I might be able to get you in touch with someone if interested. I've got my GPEN and GWAPT, and am now looking at a couple of their cloud security offerings. The SANS exams are cake since they're open book and you get two pre-tests.

I also just realized I technically have a Cisco cert... Did the Sourcefire administration cert right after they were acquired by Cisco but before all the branding and realignment happened.

Sec + was a straight up bitch of a test. Their question pool must be in the thousands covering everything from locking doors to encryption protocols. Never again.

I found CCNP to be a lot easier than CCNA. It's more focused, the Route and Switch tests are separate, and the Tshoot is just dead simple with some minor practice on the topology.

That's good to know, we don't manage the routers so much, it's managed by big telcom group globally but we do manage LAN at the sites. I've already stated that the CCNP would be R/S. Did you do the Pearson test prep stuff, Cisco Press books or any specific training?

I got some good slaps on the back at work today, some middle management guys were impressed I passed without formal training class (they were willing to pay for), so I'll have another beer...

I just got home from Cisco Live in San Diego, I have 5 CCNAs and 2 NPs ( half way through Collab )

The new changes coming Feb of next year are pretty wild. I work for a VAR so we have to maintain certs, plus it is good resume fodder
