I just bought a 2007 crewmax limited 5.7l with 91k miles. I love this truck. It might not be one of the $80,000 diesel trucks, but to me, it seems like it. Ive always bought clunkers and this truck feels like a high end SUV to me. I never knew trucks could be this nice.

I bought it because my travel trailer was a little on the heavy side for my previous vehicle, at about 4,000 pounds. I probably could have gotten away witha tacoma, but i didnt want to have to push it when going up a mountain.

For now, im going to do as much maintenance to it as i can. I have some questions about that. Ill post some questions if i get some responses

Thanks guys. Im in portland, oregon, btw.

The first question i had. Im going to change all the fluids. I have no idea what the service history of the truck is. Keep in mind, i am not an experienced mechanic. Im very mechanically inclined, but I just dont have a lot of experience. So, sorry if i ask some dumb questions.

For the tranny fluid. I saw some mixed opinions. Some say to just do a few drain and fills. Others say to drain it all through the tranny cooler. This sounds like a good idea to me. I found a write up here:
    https://www.tundratalk.net/forums/m...ssion-fluid-change.html#/topics/106946?page=1

This sounds like you drain out a gallon while the truck is running. Then shut it off and then fill it back up and then repeat. Will being a gallon low while its running damage the truck? or is it fine because its always getting fluid and never runs totally dry? Like.... if you removed a gallon of atf and drove it like that, im assuming it would quickly cause damage, but is that because the atf would get too hot from constantly being cycled?

    It's not gonna hurt anything.

I find it's just easier to drain the pan, refill then drain again the next oil change.

Any crud is in the pan. Draining gets rid of it right off the bat. The pump flush dous the same except the crud in the pan is still there.

    I'm all about simple.

We are doing more maint. Than 90 percent of the rest of vehicle owners.

What atf should i use? I see people saying valvoline maxlife and others saying world standard. Im guessing thats the official oem fluid and valvoline maxlife is the good enough generic?

WS is OEM, Maxlife is compatable synthetic. Mixed views ftom straying from OEM. Recent Drain / Fill with Maxlife with no issues yet. Some talk about Amsoil as well.

    $11/qt of WS.

$17/gallon of Max. I've been running Max for 100k miles.

WS like $10 quart at dealership, lower on Amazon.
Max life $18 gallon at Walmart.

I did not think WS was synthetic, my reasoning. Wanted Synthetic. I could have been wtong on WS.

    Ok. Thanks guys.

    Next question:
I hear the plastic oil filter cap or housing or something is a piece of crap. Ive been looking it up. Im not sure exactly what i need to buy. Is it a cap or the housing? I see people buying parts and pulling the old one apart and replacing a spring or something. Im a little confused. It would probably make more sense when i actually take it off and look at it, but i just want to replace it when i do. What should i buy?

The plastic housing works, many like to replace. I have the Aluminium housing part # in my build, link below. You do have to use (replace) the center piece from plastic housing because a larger/longervfilter is used. Fairly easy to figure out.

So, after its replaced, do you use a different model oil filter?

You will Use same filter, The center piece that comes with the Aluminum housing is shorter than tundra filter. Read its the Vensa housing which had smaller shorter filter.
It will make sense when uou get your hands on it.

    Welcome!

I bought my clunker Tundra almost 2 years ago, a 2007 RCSB SR5 5.7L with 270k. Zero service records on file, nothing. I methodically changed all fluids, filters, plugs... a little over 285k today and she runs great. Good luck with your new truck.

It has the tiniest of cracks in a few places in the seats. Is this something that i should have fixed or it will get worse or just ignore it because they are hardly noticeable
