price check on these used KO2's

Looking for some feedback on these tires I found on Craigslist. Picking are slim here.

I've been exchanging texts with the seller and he claims these have 2-4K miles on them. I think I can get them for $725. He's pretty firm on price.

New, these are $1100 with tax. Would you pay $750 for these? Keep in mind the pickings are slim here. This is the only set I'm seeing in the right size.

It's really hard to tell from the pictures how much tread is actually left.

 

here is a pic of mine from 2 weeks ago. had 40k miles on them and tread was only at 8/32s. Maybe that'll help give ya a lil idea

 

If that's the case, this guy is not being honest. I don't think they only have 2-4K on them. But again, I wish he would just use a tread depth gauge.

 

Check the date code. I bought some "new" tires a few years ago. According to the date code, they were almost 10 years old. Had to sign a waiver to get them mounted. The chain stores wouldn't mount them at all.

No way...a penny is 3/4" diameter. Those things are half worn out IMO.

 

Do not buy those. Avoid anyone that says "lots of life left" or anything like that. Use a gauge. That is definitely not worth the price, especially from a scammer, in my opinion.

 

I remember my last set of those. When new, I marveled at how stinking deep the tread appeared to be. The ones you pictured do not give me that same impression.

 

Just my opinion, but I never buy used tires. Except maybe for my wheelbarrow. Just not worth it. As someone else said - even when you buy new ones, check the date.

 

At the top of the picture, there are some little spikes of rubber sticking out from the tread blocks. I think those wear off fairly quickly. I'll have to check my truck when I get home.

 

Take a tread gauge when you go to look at them and see for yourself. They look to be in pretty good shape but who knows until theyre in front of you.

 

The picture posted in your first one looks like they have a lot more wear than 4k miles. I have 20k on mine and they look like that

 

Yeah I'm starting to think this guy is lying. Initially he said "don't try to lowball me, I've already had a lot of interest in these." Then when I mentioned I was 2.5 hours away he offered to come to me. If you've had a lot of local interest why would you be so quick to drive to me?

After reading your comments and studying the pictures I'm going to pass on these. Thanks for the help everyone.

 

2.5 hours is too far to gamble. The picture with the penny in your first post looks the worst. The other pics in the posting they dont look very worn. Have him buy a tread gauge and send you pics. Worst case he says no and you move on

 

I agree. If he was local to me I would just go see them in person. He said he would deliver them to me but I had to have cash in hand and be ready to buy. There is no way I'm going to agree to purchase before seeing them in person. I'll probably just suck it up and buy new ones at this point.

 

I’m running KO2 right now. My guess is somewhere between 25-35 thousand on those tires.

 

That’s too risky. What are you going to do if they don’t balance? Don’t think a shop is going to stand behind that issue on used tires you didn’t buy from them. You’re too close to new price. Tundras are already tricky to get a good balance so I would hard pass and save your money for something new.

 

@FirstGenVol - I put 60k on a set with my wife's Touareg and the ONLY reason I replaced them (with another set of KO2s) was they got loud. That still had loads of tread. Still looked to have about as much tread as that penny pic. I would also pass at that price. Great tires, but too many unknowns for me on a used set at that price point.

 

Used tire market often sucks for (re)seller. Tires have been listed over a month. If they were a great deal they would be sold. Remind him of listing time. I would offer maybe $500 cash. Seller should be grateful. Just my .02

 

I don't think I'm even going to bother since he's so far away. He was already borderline hostile in his texts. He would probably fly off the rails if I offered him $500. I carry a handgun when I meet someone from Craigslist. I'd have to bring my AR too.

 

Steer clear. There is so much value and piece of mind with a new set of tires.

Sometimes new just makes sense. I have close to 70k and still have about 5-10k left on my 275/55/20's and couldnt be happier. I will note that my tires look way better in person compared to pics i was taking

 

Bumping this thread to ask about the load range. In comparing the K02's in this size, the E rated tires weigh 7-8lbs more and cost around $80 more per set. I don't do any towing or haul heavy loads. Is there any reason I should spend more for the E rated tires? I'd rather try to save MPG with the lighter tires if I can.

 

On a gen 1 get c rated. Lighter truck than a gen 2

 

If your an offroad machine and need stronger tires, yes. If its mostly a pavement princess, no. You'll get a better ride in addition to better mpg.

 

I have bought two sets of E rated KO2's - they do drop mpg's and even feel heavier while driving. I personally don't mind it, but if you don't off road or tow, maybe not worth it for you. They feel bulletproof though all the time and I enjoy the E rated for those previously mentioned applications. Currently looking for E rated tires for Tundra to replace my Michelins and may do KO2 or Goodyear Trailrunner AT (have a coupon and like trying new things which is why I'm debating GYs).

 

E range tires will ride harsh. I think mine are C range.

 

The c rated is still an LT tire. The load rating is high enough to hold the truck on just 2 tires.

 

I keep hearing they are terrible in rain on pavement, what’s your take?

 

I haven’t had an issue at all with rain. I don’t think they are all they are cracked up to be though. I’ve had multiple sets on different vehicles. They wear well and are adequate in most situations but I’ll probably try something else when these are done.
