10,000 mile oil change?

82k miles on my 2013 and have always gone by the factory recommended 10k interval. Who am I to say I know better than Toyota?

 

When I first bought the vehicle, the dealership made an appointment for me to do the oil change at 5k, they set it up for me, I didn't ask. So I followed through with that to the service dealership closest to me.

Either way I don't mind, I already have some stash of 0W-20. Yes I own a non-flex, the dealer put a sticker on my window for the next oil change. If it ends, that's fine. My previous Silverado used 0w-20 and so does our Subaru Ascent, hence I got a stash of it so I can change it on my own, I actually do for the silverado and Ascent. I just wanted freebie cause it came with a new car. Heck I paid for it since the truck is 41 thousand dollars.

If I have do my own oil change then bring it on. Im ready regardless.

 

I do mine at 5k but I drive less than 5k a year. Some dealerships will say as the truck gets older/more wear, the intervals should be sooner. $$$

 

YES YES YES ^^^. For McGov that is why they spec that interval: To manage their warranty risk.

I have the 5.7 flex. I go every 10,000 miles. Take a look at what Blackstone Labs has to say....

 

Take it back before your Toyotacare expires. If they've only done one change for free, you'll get another.

 

Never seen a Honda burn oil

 

I just bought it last October, March was my first service, they scheduled another one for August at 9995 miles.

 

Like you, I put under 2K miles a year on my truck. I stretch the time interval beyond 12 months (last change @18 months) based on what I heard an old GM engine designer recommend about low mileage vehicles. Such low mileage represents little run time and minimal combustion product acid accumulation in crankcase. In my case, I don't think I've done any harm, but I won't go past that time interval even if the mileage is well below 5K miles.

As for dealerships recommending shorter intervals as the truck ages, I suspect that's to increase their profit. I overheard a crook at the local quick change place tell a woman with a straight face that she should be getting her oil changed every 2K to 3K miles (SMH). Maybe back in the fifties. I wasn't there for an oil change, I was getting a state inspection. Quick change crooks represent the best reason to change your own oil.

I DIY both my engine and transmission oil (drain and fills) at the same time every 2500-3k miles.

6.5 qts. of Mobil1 Synthetic High Mileage cost about $15. OEM TOY Filter $5.

4 qts. of DEXIII cost $13.

Cheap insurance.

 

I try to do it every 5,000 miles. No, nothing will go bad if you do it every 10,000. It's a Toyota. But I like to do it every 5,000. Missed an oil change recently and went 12,500 on an oil change, nothing went wrong

 

$15 / 6.5 = $2.31 a quart, where are you getting synthetic at that price??? Heck a lot of conventional oils are more per quart ! How many times a year do you do it??

 

I would like to know too. Maybe he is buying drums.

Flex Fuel for me so 5k miles and it gets an oil change at no charge. I just have to remember to tell them that this is a Flex Fuel truck so to change the oil. So far they have done it, or at least it's been documented on paper it was done. The Camry is every 10k though.

 

If the oil needs to be changed at 5K...I'm a huge believer that it doesn't...and if instead we change it at 10K, what symptoms will we start to notice as result of not changing our oil more often?

 

Toyota dealer says 5000mile intervals here in Canada. Maybe we fall under the severe duty? Whatever, its only 2x/year so money well spent IMO

there was a TSB/extended warranty for that generation of accords related to oil consumption...Honda would pay for repairs if it burned more than 1 quart every thousand miles. mine burned a quart every oil change (7500ish miles). over all super solid car. only real issue i had on it in 185k miles was powersteering pump sprung a leak. car never broke down though.

 

I drove a 2005 Civic from brand new to 200,000 miles. it was tough as nails, got 25+ mpg's, transmission died at 200K, i replaced and still sold the car for $4,500. loved driving it but ya do sorta sit on the ground when you drive one
