Spare Tire

Hello Everyone, just picked up a 2017 Double Cab TRD Blazing Blue this weekend!!! Really like it! Been on this site to gather info before buying...lots of solid info...thanks to all!

I took the spare tire off and there is a sticker on it "Temporary Use Only".

Is it the tire or the rim? The tire looks likes it's the same as what I have on the truck & same size.

What is this "warning" for?

 

Found this in the owner's manual...but why is it temporary? weird...

 

not sure...maybe because its not equipped with pressuring monitoring?

 

I can only think they recommend temporary use because of either the TPMS or the fact that they would prefer you put the spare tire back and get your original tire fixed LOL hopefully they wouldn’t put an inferior rim on the spare.

 

Hmm. My spare tire is exactly the same as the other four. The only difference is the rim. I would like to find another TRD rim to put on there though.

 

Even jeeps get a matching spare! LOL

 

When I change my tires, I will keep one and swap it with the spare tire. I will feel safer with a 70% worn tire than this "take me home tire", especially if I am pulling my boat. I will keep my eye on used classified adds for a matching TRD wheel like 15whtrd wants to do.

I guess they do that to save a few $$$ on each vehicles. Not only the OE tires are inferior to an over the counter tire, they managed to make tires not good enough to be used as a regular tire.

 

I wonder when they started adding shitty tires to the spare. Although most people hate the P metric Michelin ATs. I find they work OK for now. I lucked out and they use that same tire on my spare. Somewhat comforting for now LOL. When I upgrade my tire and their size I will get a fifth tire for the spare. I would even be fine with a blemished TRD off-road wheel.

 

When my ‘19 got a flat at 900 miles old, I used the spare tire. It’s the exact tire as the stock 4. Same brand and size.

Had the shop repair the flat and put it on the steel spare rim.

My guess is that the steel spare rim has no TPMS in it.

 

I will measure the thread depth on the spare and compare against a new Michelin LTX A/T2. I have a feeling there's less thread on the spare.

 

I contacted Toyota via the "Contact US" on their website to find out why it's "Temporary Use Only"...If I don't get anything back, I will call Toyota Canada directly.

 

I think its because the wheel is ugly
