My first Toyota truck, and the book says 10k oil change intervals. Do you all follow that schedule? I am a little hesitant, but will go with it if there is real live data saying anything sooner is a waste.

Also, is there an easy way to convert the power outlets to power all the time??

    Thank you

I've always gone by the 10K schedule. I'm over 100K now and zero issues.

According to other threads on this website, people will go 10k with 5.7 Flex Fuel engines before changing their oil. They then sent in a sample of their oil to a company that will analyzes engine oil, and apparently it tested just fine. In fact, they say they could've run their oil longer if they wanted. Based on that I change my oil every 10k with Mobil 1. I've been doing it for years with no issues that I am aware of; I'm at 150,000 miles.

The outlet thing. I added an always on USB port to my dash. I even added an always-on separate fuse box, and I'm in the process of adding an always-on USB and 12V outlet in the back of my truck in my camper shell.

Instead of adding a separate fuse box I think it is possible to tap into the existing fuse box with an aftermarket fuse that allows you to add an additional accessory. I think it is called add-a-fuse, or something similar. It didn't go this route because I wanted to leave the stock fuse box alone.

I hope someone who knows way more than I do about this stuff will add to my post.

I had been doing 5k intervals on my '16 for the last 50k miles and just went to the 10k. I'm about to hit 60k and checked the oil and it still looked good.

10,000 on regular fuel new trucks to follow warranty? Flex fuel is 5000 on new vehicles for warranty?? After my two years since I have FFV I will continue on the 5K on my old TSS I use to go to 7 maybe 8k but that is just me.

4.6 every 5000. Use synthetic oil. And have it changed, dont do it myself. Ran into an issue with a vehicle because they said I had no record of oil changes.

5.7 here, went into dealership at 5k, no issues getting it done, they even scheduled me for 10k in August. Free 2 yr maintenance why not every 5k - at least for me.

Oil changes under Toyota care are only every 10k. Check your receipt. Should have only been topping off fluids that needed it, tire rotation and inspection. If you want every 5k they will charge you for the oil change.

I did every 5k in my 2012. I got the truck used at 25k miles and just wanted to make sure all was good. I traded it in at 70k miles. No issues. I did do the oil analysis on an oil change after ~6k miles and it came back all good. It stated that i could go many more miles and it will still be effective.

Since i have Toyota care for 2 years on my new Tundra i am planning to stick with their regular intervals (oil changes every 10k).

flex fuel engines, which are predominant in the gulf coast states, have a toyota specified 5,000 mile oil change interval (2,500 if you actually run E85)...and are covered by Toyotacare

one tip - if you want to save money and time, change the oil every 5k, but change the filter every 10k.

Your dealer cut you some slack, and didn't argue about changing the oil at 5K.

The bad news?...if they change it now, they aren't going to change it later. You'll only get, iirc, two oil changes in two years. They'll let you space them out however you want (might balk at interval less than a year), but I believe after two changes on them, they'll start charging you for them. I did my own changes; I don't let anybody mess with my drain plug. ;)

If you use full synthetic oil you can easily go 10k or even 15k miles because synthetic don't really lose their viscosity. The biggest factor is keeping it clean during that time which is why I only use Toyota OEM or Wix filters.

Not sure why there's confusion. The flex fuel engines require oil changes every 5,000...and they ARE covered by Toyotacare. I got free oil changes at 5, 10, 15, and 20k miles.

Agree on fact that oil doesn't break down , only additives break down or are lost. don't agree with save money and change oil every 5 and filter at 10 , should do just opposite . Change filter at 5 and oil at 10. Filters are cheap , and you can tell alot from visual on filter.

not on a FFV. Mine were done every 5k. The difference in the FFV and the regular motor don't involve any lubricated parts in the motor so I am doing my own at 10k. I have no problem doing that with today's oil. Now if conv. I would still be doing every 3k. I don't run E85.

    No confusion.

@phabej owns a 5.7L Non-flex fuel. He apparently lives/bought the truck in a region that allows Non-flex fuel 5.7L engine. He got his first oil change at 5K, where owner manual recommends 10K for Non-flex fuel engines. Dealer doesn't really care how many miles are on if he's owned the truck one year or more. If it was less than one year, then the dealer cut him some slack on the 5K change.

He said the dealer set up a future appointment for a 10K mile change (confirms Non-flex fuel). The dealer may have calculated a future time based on his driving history, but I suspect the appointment was for one year, or near end of 2 year Toyotacare. He should watch for 10K miles, or end of his Toyotacare...whichever comes first. I got a post card from the dealer letting me know it was about to expire.

One of the nicer features of GM cars is an oil life monitor that uses an algorithm GM Powertrain developed that uses miles driven, number of starts, and maybe some other factors to calculate percent of oil life remaining.

My past GM cars (2006 Corvette, 2008 Malibu) with the oil monitor began to warn as the oil life approached the end. Typically this would be about 13K miles or more depending on your driving style. Recommended oil viscosity for both vehicles was 5W-30, which is available as a conventional motor oil. For that reason, I believe the 10K change interval is fine regardless of oil type. Toyota does not specifically recommend synthetic motor oil be used in the owner manual, but they do specify viscosity that is only available as a synthetic or blend.

apologies, I did not realize he said non-flex fuel. you're correct then, he got extra oil changes for free.

my 2008 Honda had this also. seemed to work...when my commute was heavy city driving I could get about 7,200 miles before oil life hit zero....but when my commute was all highway, I could get almost 12k. but then again I started burning oil at about 150,000 so....lol.

No apology needed. I just read between the lines. But, my point was it's doubtful he'll any get any more than two free oil changes with a Non-flex fuel 5.7L...unless the dealer is feeling generous.
