I have already started this post elsewhere in this forum but I am still relatively new to the whole forum thing so I apologize if I am doing anything wrong. I don’t know if I even posted last time in the appropriate forum

I am having a great deal of difficulty with installing an aftermarket stereo into my 2018 Tundra. Upon wiring everything, everything works correctly in both my truck and stereo except for my factory rear view camera. No matter what I try, I am simply unable to get this function to work properly. I know that the camera works because I have temporarily reinstalled factory stereo a few times to make sure.

Regarding the factory rear view camera, it has previously worked when factory stereo was installed and a Kenwood stereo that I had up to a few weeks ago when I wanted to upgrade to this Pioneer 4400. The rear view camera had initially worked on the 4400 but only when I shifted into reverse. I should have been happy with this and just left it alone but I wanted to have the option to power the rear view camera on while I was driving for towing purpose and etc.

As a result of the rear view camera not coming on when driving after pressing button to switch to this, I then removed the 4400 so that I could look at wiring and figure out what needed to be done. It was at this point which I messed something up because I now also couldn’t use my rear view camera when shifting into reverse like I previously could. This harness is the correct one for my truck as it worked fine for my Kenwood and worked with the 4400 until I messed something up playing with wiring. This harness has the necessary adapter to retain the factory rear view camera for the 2018 tundra that steps voltage down from 12v to 6v.

I have verified that there is indeed power in the reverse wires when I shift into reverse and it appears that stereo is recognizing that I have shifted into reverse. However, instead of the camera coming on it just switches over to a black blank screen and then switches back to main menu when I shift from reverse.

I have replaced the wiring harness and still have this issue. I have done everything that I can think of and I am losing my damn mind. Reached out to pioneer and still waiting for a response. Any advice would be appreciated.

If you replaces the harness then look at your pins on the HU
    One may be lose
See if all the connections are in fact.. connecting.

Is the 12v to 6v actually needed? I have a 2019 and it is not used. I am assuming the 2018 would be the same.

Supposedly it is needed be the Tundra rear view camera is only 6v and constantly running 12v evidently will cause the factory rear view camera to burn out a lot sooner bc its always powered.

Which aftermarket wiring harness did you use? I have purchased a crux swrty 61n and I am wondering if it is the problem

Just figured that I would give an update about what’s going on with my situation. For whatever the reason, it appears that my OEM backup camera will only correctly work with certain aftermarket brands.

As of now I have been able to get it to work with factory radio, Jensen, and Kenwood and can’t get it to work properly with any of the 3 Pioneer NEX series stereos I attempted or the Alpine ILX-W650 stereo.

A few days ago, I contacted Pioneer tech support and was informed that most likely their stereos weren’t compatible with my OEM backup camera upon their verifying my wiring was indeed correct and the correct settings in the head unit. This sounds hard to believe but actually seemed to make sense. Last but not least, today I took my truck up to Best Buy to let them install it because I am completely over dealing with this situation. They were aware of the problem that I had been experiencing and were quite confident that they would have no issues with this basic install. After 3.5 hours, they also were completely stumped as they experienced the same problem with both the Alpine and Pioneer units. Before leaving I had them try plugging an aftermarket backup camera into each of these stereos and they both worked perfectly which made no sense to them or myself. Pissed bc it seems like I will now have to buy a aftermarket backup camera to have it work with stereo I have chosen when my camera works fine. I have never experienced or have heard of this happening. Oh well, it is what it is
