Leveling TRD Exhaust

After installing my TRD exhaust it was very obvious that the drivers side exhaust pipe was closer to the body than the passenger side. Not only did the exhaust tip hit the bumper when I was off-road, it was visually off putting. I had to do something!! Also seeing a bunch of other people having this problem I decided to make a thread with the fix I came up with.


I ordered these exhaust hangers...

After much frustration I decided to cut off my old exhaust hanger. I couldn't get it lose for the life of me. Once I cut it off I installed one of the new exhaust hangers.

After installing only one hanger it was obvious that the hanger was not as rigid as the OEM hanger and it let the exhaust pipe vibrate while idling.

In order to combat this I installed both hangers on the drivers side and it tightened up the exhaust pipe quite well! It was a little tricky to get them both on there but I drew a diagram to try and help explain how I did it.

I love it!! It's even now and exactly level to the bumper!! Much more clearance then before and looks BA! The red hangers are visible from the side of the truck and add some flair compared with the rear sway bar.

Anyway I'm not a pro at this but let me know if I missed something and be kind!

As a side note I should add that I saw some guys recommending to drill out the bolt holes on the exhaust pipe or unbolting the exhaust and using jack stands to level it. I didn't want to crack those bolts for fear the metal gasket would mess up, or that I would be there all day trying to get it aligned with jack stands. I am so glad I tried this first!! 14 bucks and about 20 minutes and its forever fixed. Good luck and enjoy!

I need to give this a try. Mine is still high on the drivers side as well.

 

Diagram: I sprayed both hangars with WD40 to help slid'r in easily.

 

Do it! so easy and makes a big difference in the look.

 

I've got a balance left on an Amazon gift card, so I'll place the order tomorrow. I just ordered some eagle claws to hold my weathertech passenger side mat in place and a stubby antenna last night, this will be my next order. Thanks for posting this solution.

Will do. They should be delivered on Thursday or Friday, so I'll get them installed next Saturday.

 

I’ve always just snugged up the 6 bolts, pushed down on high side while tightening, then up on low side while tightening.

If it’s off too far still, take out the bolts one at a time and drill the holes bigger.

I saw that you posted that somewhere. I feel like this was way easier, permanent, and I don’t have to risk ruining the exhaust flange or steel gaskets. Also seems hard to keep the pipe where you want it while on your back trying to cinch down the bolts.
To each their own but I found this fix very easy and the only tool I used was a utility knife. I’m just kicking myself for waiting so long!

 

Yes!! Thank you. Along with the coach builder shackles they improved the ride immensely. Although, the billet bracket was extra, and I think it should be included!

 

Agree, the brackets are highway robbery, no pun intended.

 

Side note.... I off-roaded today and the exhaust didn’t hit the bumper once!! So stoked on this mod.

 

How did the excursion go today? I wanted to tag along, but couldn't get the day off at work to make the drive out to CA. On a side note, I got those eagle claws installed today for the passenger side weathertech mat...works pretty good at keeping the mat from sliding.

 

It was awesome! We had to cut it a bit short due to an appt we had but really fun! Good to know Ill order them tonight! Hope to see you on the next one!

 

Order more than you need just in case. I got the four pack and only used 2 on the passenger mat. One of the eagle claws bent as I tried to seat it into the carpet so I had to use another one and try again. If I needed all four I would have been screwed. Here is a pic of the finished product. Hopefully I can make a future trail run up there.

 

God damnit. I tried ignoring this and pretending it isn't something I need to worry about, but sure enough the driver's side is a half inch lower. Sonofabitch.

But seriously, thanks for posting this. Glad there is a cheap option to remedy the issue.

Edit: I just realized @Tundyfundy and @AZTundra you both said you were high on the driver's side. Any idea why mine would be the opposite? My exhaust was installed at factory/port.

 

No idea why yours would be the opposite. I thought maybe the drivers side was higher due to new stiffer exhaust hangers while the passenger side reused the stock hanger. I ordered the same red hangars as @Tundyfundy but haven't received them yet. the other option according to Keith at dirtydeeds is to loosen the three bolts to the tailpipe section and rotate the pipe a little and retighten.

 

I'll crawl under tomorrow and take a look. Maybe Keith's suggestion will work for my situation.

 

Worth a shot, it didn’t really bug me too much but the pipe would bang the bumper when the truck would rock. Not cool. Think about is the driver side low or is the passenger side high? Choose which side has the height you like and adjust the other one. Post some pix after!
