Ok guy's we have plenty of discussion on EDC knifes, but couldn't find anything broadly detailing sharpeners. I would consider myself novice when it comes to sharpening knives. I usually use pull sharpeners for my fillet and kitchen knives. I've sharpened my old buck knife and other inexpensive knives on hand stones. I'm looking to purchase a Spyderco to go along with my Benchmade, but don't have the confidence to put either one on a stone. I would never consider pulling a premium blade knife through a pull sharpener.

First off I'm not looking to spend a fortune on my first good sharpener (Wicked or Pro Edge systems. Here's one on looking at, but I would love to hear from our knife expert's on here. Any suggestions or recommendations would be great

You can't go wrong with the Ken onion work sharp or a decent whet stone set.

Most importantly with whet stones is good technique.

I bought this stone kit a few years ago and really like it. I was a novice like you and found this wet stone kit easy to use. Buy the time I was done sharpening I could cut paper with my kitchen knives.

Thanks Pat, I was reading up on that Japanese wet stone, supposedly the best water stone out there. Thanks I'm definitely keeping that on my list.

I've had great success with Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker. Easy to use and can make razor sharp edges.

RCI front, transmission/diff, and gas tank skids received, waiting for spring install. Compustar remote starter. front/rear dash cam.
I use Sharpmaker for touch ups, and edge pro apex to reprofile. If I had to do over I would prob get the wicked edge system.

Haven't used any of the newer sharpening systems but the wicked edge sure looks legit. Also the DMT(?) monocrystal sumthin sumthin lapping/sharpening stones would great.

I just use the basic variety of Arkansas stones, ceramic rod, Norton's 4000/8000(for chisels and plane irons) and a coarse/fine diamond sharpener.

This, as long as you don't let your edge get too bad or you wish to re-profile.

How do you guys sharpen? Do you just do that 1/16th or so of a knife blade? I do the whole edge. Lay it flat on the stone and start rubbing

Back in the late 60s I used to hunt deer with my dad on his cousins ranch in Nevada. There was an old blacksmith shop and there was a similar wheel grind stone like yours but foot pedal driven!

I rotate my blades pretty regularly, so I don't have to sharpen enough to do anything but the primary edge (the first part that cuts). Following Murray Carter's philosophy, you want to do the secondary edge (laying the blade flat), then the primary edge. The reason being that if you only do the primary edge, over time the blade stock never gets narrowed, so you get a thicker blade behind the primary edge and it doesn't cut as well. Thinning the blade stock first keeps the primary/secondary geometry consistent.

I remember large antique leather strops hanging on the wall too. There was a brick furnace and bellows. Hard core back then. I like that Norton setup. Seems that two members have Norton. Nice setup.

I have several Bark River Knives.

I really like them, but they are somewhat difficult to sharpen.

They have a convex blade so they need to be sharpened on some sort of leather strap, otherwise you lose the blade shape.

The idea behind the convex blade is to have more metal in the edge area, thus making the edge stronger, and I think it holds an edge longer as well.

Since the Ken Onion sharpener uses a flexible belt, I'm wondering if it would be good for using on Bark River Knives?

    Thanks.

P.S. I use the Spyderco sharpener mentioned above on my knives that have a concave shape and it works really well.
