Alright, I'm sure this has been discussed here before. I heard about this on the Facebook tundra group and it looked pretty legit.

Apparently a feature is already built into the truck that lets you throw it into reverse (provided you're going fast enough) and keeps the transmission from shifting but turns on your back up camera. Apparently its a way to check on your trailer connection if you want to.

So I tried it this morning. Worked just as described.

That is pretty cool. And pretty gutsy Nor7. Too bad I'll never know if it works on my truck because there's no way in hell I'm throwing my truck in reverse while I'm on the freeway.

I know, I assure you though that it's perfectly safe. Its a safety feature built into your transmission, just don't try it if you're going slower than 30 mph.

The first video I saw on it was a 3rd gen.

I will admit that it took me a few minutes to build up the nerve to try it.

What happens when your hand slips and you accidentally go to far and put it in park?

Seems like more bad than good can come from people trying this. Plus the cameras aren't exactly high definition so idk what you can really expect to see back there. Staring at your screen while driving down the road sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Well the intent of the feature is so you can check on your trailer connection or whatever you're towing.

I get that, but can you really see if anything is off by just glancing at the cam? Seems like it would take a minute for your eyes to adjust and really be able to tell what your seeing, and thats more than enough time for a car to slam on brakes in front of you.

Also I highly doubt that Toyota intended for people to use the backup cam for this purpose lol.

Not trying to bust your chops its just easy to see where someone may lose their life trying to do something silly and unnecessary. How many times has your trailer come unconnected driving down the road?

Guess for some people it may be nice to check just to make sure, but I think I would rather just pull over for 2 seconds and get out and look then risk causing an accident.

I don't really see it any differently than when I glance in the rear view mirror while driving to make sure nothing has flown/fallen out of the bed or to make sure a strap is still secured. I've never had a load become loose but I always like having that re-assuring glance.

I gotcha. Maybe its just my eyes but I can't see details too good out of the backup camera even when I'm going slow so I feel like it would be a lot harder (especially if you are actually trying to look at details and inspect something) than simply glancing up at your rear view.

I can see where it would be nice for a peace of mind if you are towing an expensive boat or something, but I don't think I could ever get the balls to take my eyes off the road long enough to actually inspect the connections from the rear view camera unless they upgraded the picture quality. This is on a 3rd gen though, I have never looked through a backup cam on a 2nd gen. Plus my basic entune package has the smallest screen in its class so that probably plays a big part in my opinion on the subject. I'm sure its easier to see for the guys who have the screen thats 2" or so larger than mine. Still don't think I'd have the balls to try it though lol.

We all know Toyota didn't put that feature in purposely. They can't even put in automatic one touch windows. They made the reverse not engage at speed and if anything, were too lazy to disengage the camera in reverse.

Dude, you got balls. I'd try it but I just couldn't imagine getting the cojones to do it. Imagine explaining to your wife why you need a new tranny!

Actually, if our trucks are as hardy as my old 99 Tacoma prerunner, I'd give it a shot. My twin sister and I were fighting (high school time) and she could be a bitch at times. I was ignoring her so she slammed the truck in PARK while we were going 40 down the highway. Luckily it didn't screw up the tranny but it did shut off the engine.
Needless to say, I was plenty pissed! LOL

First thing I was taught when driving on the track was to push in your clutch if you start to spin out. That's a good way to destroy your transmission if you don't.

I actually remember accidentally doing this in my friends ~1990 5.0 mustang. Was going about 35mp. Good thing it has power because when i through it in there it just starting pealing out in reverse as i was moving forward. Didnt catch and destroy anything.
