I have been doing some searching and found most of my answers....but not all. For 2014+ what are people using in the diffs and Transfer case?

Diffs appears to be Redline 75w85(as specked) or M1, Lucas, Royal purple 75w90.

Confused on the transfer case fluid. I found a thread with some screen shots but lost it in my sea of open tabs.

Called local Toyota dealer and I can get all three replaced for $220 with a 15% off coupon before the end of the year.

Im currently sitting with 7 quarts of Redline 75w85 at $122 in a shopping cart at Summit Racing. Im not opposed to doing this myself to know it was done right.

Just need to get more info on the Transfer case if possible before I make my decision tonight or tomorrow. Does anyone have a link with the spec or maybe a write up?

Also wouldn't it be great if there was a Maintenance section in each generation so we could search it faster......just a thought.

Use Toyota fluids. Didnt do the front because it barely gets used compared to the rear.

Normally I'm right there with you on Toyota fluids. I use their coolant and the M1 oil. Im still looking for the Transfer case fluid info.

I may take it to Toyota but even with friends that work in the auto industry I have a HUGE trust issue with dealers and mechanics. They are not all the same. It would be cool if they were rated like restaurants or like CDL drivers....instead of that nonsense Toyota survey where they always get a perfect score.

Thought the same on my Tacoma but it spins all the time and dark at 50k. I would skip transfer as it is barely used. Did Tacoma at 50k and looked new.

So I found the other thread you commented on....now I am trying to decide between the Redline or that Ravenol and just get it all off Amazon..using the 75w for T case.

Just ordered the Ravenol 75w85 for diffs and the 75w for the transfer case. First review was from an individual with a 2015 Tundra. Hope it works.

Confirmed via Toy service manager that ALL their diff oils are Mobil1.

I have an 02’ 4wd. The front and transfer are spec’d at 75w-90. The REAR is spec’d at 90w (cannot be found even at stealership!).

I replaced all 3 diffs with Mobil1 75w-90 per service guy at Toy. Why do they not have the spec’d 90w? This is a high dollar stealership.

Rear diff (LSD) grumbled after 75w-90 for limited slip. Ended up immediately changing out REAR Diff to Lucas 80w-90. Success!

Conclusion: Lucas 80w-90 at $10 a quart beats Mobil1 at $16 a quart! Transfer and front diff are doing fine.

The OP has a 2014 and up which has a Borg Warner transfer case and uses a straight 75 weight fluid

It works, that’s What I used. I mistakenly put in differential fluid like the second generations and it didn’t work right. It wouldn’t switch out of four-wheel-drive easily. Switched out to the Ravenel and it works beautifully.

Cool deal. Just put this here for 1st Gen’rs and to confirm that its best to use whats spec’d (regardless of Gen).

Hello, Toyota dealets do not use 75w straight OEM at @44 dollars a quart in the transfer case if you have them change it. Thier mechanics and parts computers all spec 75w-90

This is what I was trying to convey above!

My 1st Gen (I realize this OP thread is 2014) REAR is spec’d at straight 90w. Why doesn’t the stealership carry whats spec’d? More importantly, if its spec’d for a reason and they use the wrong weight, who is responsible?

Conclusion: Its best to DIY and its done properly.

    Opps hit post accidentally.
I sent the Ravenol 75w off to Blackstone labs and its posted in another thread. I suggest using a straight 75w in the tcase as the 75w90 does cause slower shifting into 4wd.
The Ravenol is not truly up to OEM specs posted by BTanchors.

They do once you call them out and show them that they have been doing it incorrectly. Long story.

If they arent using straight 75w...they are doing it wrong. Plain and simple.

To add to that, Toyota even released a TB for staright 75w on T4R IIRC....the fact a dealer didnt stock the straight 75w surprises me because the other models have been using it since like 2008.

As we all know.....dealerships are not always correct.

I just got two gallons of Red Line 75W90. Will do the rear differential. Front differential. And transfer case. I'm at 43,000 miles. Will do it by 50,000. 2017 gen. 2.5 with the 5.7 engine.

From my performance motorcycling side I've found the Red Line lubricants are of great quality and that accounts, for me, for the price premium I pay.

I quoted this one to try not and have 20 quoted messages. The original information is correct and accurate for his 1st gen. @14burrito is also correct in that I am looking for the new spec. This is why I was saying it would be great if maintenance questions had their own tab under each generation. Anybody could just read a post and buy something off the recommendation of someone else to accidentally buy an incorrect part due to generation differences. I almost did. I found the other two threads on this topic and had to read every post and check the years to make sure it applied to me.
I also called the dealer and they said all three required 75w90. I bet this is to just cut down on all the different types of fluid they need to stock.

Don’t put 75w90 in your 3rd gen transfer case. The dealer is flat out wrong. I guarantee you.

I’m not. I ordered the 75w Ravenol for that one. Their answer is why I didn’t pay $20 more then the oil to just have them do the service.

I almost ordered the 75w85 Red line. But I wanted everything in one purchase. So Amazon and Ravenol won.

I agree with the using high quality oils in the motorcycle and that being a learning lesson. I go with what is spec’d. My KTM is crazy. My CbR got high revving Castrol whatever it was. A friend read in a forum he could use rotella in his bike. He instantly had problems.

How are the dealers screwing this up?!

After you buy the fluids the dealer is probably only another $100 or so in labor, would be a nice convenience but it’s not worth the hassle to have them screw it up. It’s why I won’t even take my junk there for an oil change.

I would assume that not enough people have had the dealer service their third generation trucks transfer case. Because if they are putting in the wrong fluid, it will eventually screw it up. It just takes time. It calls for 75W in the manual. But if dealers are saying they’re putting in 75-90, it’s because they’re too lazy to carry it. I know for a fact it doesn’t work correctly. I made the mistake of following an older write up three years ago. I was unaware that they had changed to a different transfer case. When in 4 x 4, the truck would pull to the right, and it would not disengage until making a slight turn. I switched it to 75W and it’s smooth as silk again.

You’re right, it will be like a self correcting problem, on the dealers dime. Unfortunately an inconvenience to the owner though. Enough of those happen and they’ll get to the source. Until then... argh

I have a few speculations on this. 1. Like mentioned maybe not a bunch of problems being reported to them after the fact of using the wrong oil. 2. Maybe somehow the 75w90 is listed somewhere as a suitable substitute. Even though apparently it is not. 3. The older trucks use the 75w90 and in an effort to not stock 100 different fluids they just put the same fluid in. Back when I worked at Honda(2000 time frame) we had bulk oil and atf. Anything else was in quart containers we had to go get from the parts person.

I was just talking to my friend that is a GM in a family of dealerships and he told me they had sold the Toyota store recently. He is good friends with the Service Manager but I don't trust that guy. He has lied to my face before. I have one shot left at that Toyota store and he is the Service Drive manager or something. He is a good dude and cares about the customer. I just haven't had a chance to talk to him about it yet to point it out to him.

I used royal purple 75W 90 in my first gen. It's expensive but advance sends me 20% off coupons every week which helped.

Would it hurt to put 80w-90 in the transfer case as opposed to 75w-90??

Use Ravenol with the correct weights. The transfer case from 14' up are new from Borg Warner, why chance it.
