GoPro video of a weird noise

I had some time and was finally able to record the noise. In the attached video, you can really hear it between 17 and 25 seconds, and then intermittently as I am driving around the block. This is me moving at 5-10mph, swerving as much as I can to initiate the noise.

To me, it sounds like something is rubbing metal on metal.

Professional Hand Model, does this remind you of the noise you had with your rear springs and those silencer pads missing??

Pinpoint the noise and I'll send you some virtual Starbucks bucks or something

Edit:Mechanic checked the:

-Driveshaft, all good
-Rear hubs, all good
-Looked into the bed bolts - bed is solidly attached
-I checked the spare tire, no noise from there

 

No idea...maybe your spare tire is loose and moving ever so slightly? It looks pretty steady in the video though.

 

I jiggled the tire as one of my first troubleshooting attempts, and any noise it made wasn't it. God how I wish that was it was... Thanks for playing though

 

I have very similar noises. I told a coworker about it and he said it's likely the body mounts. He had the same problem with his Tacoma and solved it by replacing them.

Who knows if this is true but he seemed confident.

 

You’re right, very weird.

It does kind of sound like the spare tire. I’d drop & remove it & see what happens. It sounds kind of hollow. I’d also try shaking the exhaust system.

 

Pardon my ignorance, but what are body mounts and where are they located?? I am definitely game to check those.

 

I can try, but I am fairly sure it is neither. The spare is original and I replaced the wheels and tires with 4runner - I just found a 4runner unused spare so it might be a good opportunity to buy it and drop my old one anyway.

 

Rear shock bushing, either top or bottom.
While parked, lay down on either side of the truck and have someone make the truck bounce by jumping on the rear bumper.
Grab your exhaust pipe and shake it at different points.
Take a look at the driveshaft rubber mount thingy in the middle.

That's all I got for now, I'll take a look at under my truck tomorrow and see what jogs my memory

 

I'm new to the term as well. I've seen these under the truck before and wondered what they were. I guess it's what connects the bed to the frame. ??

 

Shocks are brand new, I would really hope it is neither.
I tried the go under while someone is on the bumper and I just can't pinpoint anything. I think I need to dedicate more time with someone shaking the truck for a while.
Driveshaft rubber mount thingy in the middle has a bit of play, but not much. Noise is not gas related - it makes more noise when I am off the gas and coasting.
I'll look at the exhaust again.

Most vehicles nowadays are unibody, that means the core body of the vehicle and frame are built as 1 (kinda). Old school cars and pickup trucks till this day are body on frame. That means the frame is an independent part of vehicle which the cab and bed are bolted to. That is the simple explanation.

The cab, bed and frame of the truck are independent parts and there are rubber or polyurethane bushings at the mounting points to reduce vibrations and noises. That is the simple explanation.

Sounds like your exhaust is moving and making contact with something.

Either that or leaf spring issue

Grab the bed rail and shake the truck side to side while sometime listens to where it is coming from.

 

I had a similar noise and it was the top shock bushing. It was completely gone. But your's could just be loose.

 

I'm fairly sure it is not the exhaust, but leaf springs/bushings are definitely a possibility. I need to get my dad to jump the bumper while I am under looking for the noise. Thanks!

 

I installed new Bilstein 5100's recently and the noise has been happening after that, although I am not sure they are related. I think I installed the shocks properly, but there is a chance I fucked up.

Not a noise I am familiar with in that video. Mine is a clunk clunk going up a driveway at slow turns that was solved by installing some plastic wedges in between the leafs tips as my silencer pads are shot or missing.


KISS Method says: Since it started after the shocks install, then go around and recheck all the connections per Hoopty. It does sound like a road vibe jiggle transferring up.

I'll whatever number we're at that it's a shock issue. You'd need much more movement I think for it to be a body mount issue.

Only other thing maybe a sway bar bushing but I don't think the early 1st gens had them in the rear (I could be wrong though)

 

You are correct in that they did not have a rear sway bar, unless you put a sweet

I'll just add that my truck makes similar noises and I don't think it's the shocks. It made this noise with the Bilstein's and now again with the ICON's back there. I've checked them multiple times and they are fine. Installed exactly as the instructions say and not loose. You can't get a torque wrench in there for the top nut but I got them tight enough.

I'm not saying it has to be the body mounts but I'm gonna bet it may be something else. What are the prizes if we get it right?

I agree with Hooptyrix regarding shock bushing possibilities and I would also check leaf spring bushings.

Stock, no issues that I am aware of. I'll give it a good jiggle, but you'd think I'd hear it at higher speeds as well - this noise is obvious only up to 15-20mph.

 

I'll check the shocks and tighten them up - they are very fresh. I am not 100% sure how to check for leaf spring bushing issues - I guess I'll out my ear close to them and I'll have someone rock the back.

 

If you have a pinch bar or even a 4'-6' 2"X4", place one end of the 2X4/pinch bar on the ground under the truck at each bushing and lift upwards checking excessive play and/or duplicating noise. Not sure if I'm explaining well enough so I'll see if I can find a video.
