"But I can fit more in my bed...."

I see several posts here and other forums where people show their trucks loaded up far beyond payload capacity. Just because you have more room in your bed to throw crap in, doesn't mean that you should.

Here is an example of a load that I hauled last weekend.

2013 Tundra CrewMax 4X4. Door sticker gives a payload rating of 1325 lbs for my truck.

Subtract my weight (230 lbs), and the weight of my aftermarket skids (about 100 lbs more than the factory was), and I am left with 995 lbs. Now, my aftermarket suspension is a bit heavier than the factory was, but my aftermarket exhaust is a bit lighter. Also, my line-x weighs more than the factory liner. I am not exactly sure the weight differences, but to play it safe, I try to keep any payload that I haul under 910 lbs.

I would like to thank you for this post. I was trying to explain this to my wife the other day but she wasn’t understanding why I was so annoyed about it.

My last truck had a payload of 1875lbs so I showed her your post, and now she is irate that I bought a useles truck.

LOL. My wife is irritated by my Tundra's low payload as well. If I ever buy a new truck again, it will be a 1-ton.

 

Well, we do always size that it's not the size that counts

Yeah, I have thought about getting a trailer, but most of the hauling that I do is for firewood, and the roads are not always amenable to trailers. But you are right, the Tundra pulls very well. The 5.7 is nice.

I hauled a pallet of pavers.........in a Taco...........it was sketchy AF but "I stuck to the back roads". I made it the 8 miles home. Second load was on my 3500lbs rated trailer.

 

No reason to subtract your weight. The payload assumes two 150lb people so you can add 70 and you have 1395 payload left take away your skids and you still have 1295

 

This was my old Tundra loaded down with tons of weight & I drove this load up the cajon pass going 70+ mph !! Cruising

 

Payload is GVWR - Curb Weight. Curb weight does not include passengers. It even says it clearly on the door sticker: The combined weight of occupants and cargo shall never exceed XXXX lbs. In my trucks case, that number is 1325 lbs like I said.

I am not saying your wrong about the amount left between curb weight and gvwr because I have not weighed one. I will definitely weigh mine now though

A lot of us are under the impression that curb weight unloaded with no occupants will leave more than whats on that sticker.

My curb weight on my registration says 5650
add 370 for (2) 150lb passengers and 70 for tow equipment and it happens to match my sticker exactly. That would be a strange coincidence.​

But like I said I could be wrong. Hope I don't sound like I am arguing just questioning. Maybe someone knows for sure

You are referencing the SAE J2807 towing standard. In that standard, it mentions the 2 150 lb person thing - for towing. I didn't read anything in that standard for payload only considerations. I always go by what the door sticker says. It says I can put a total of 1325 lbs on my truck.

Thats a 20-25% discrepancy. Say what???

 

Crewmax models have lower payload because they are heavier.

yes thats what is confusing since those things go directly to the weight of the tow vehicle. I guess the only way to tell for sure is weigh it. There is no confusion with the GVWR at 7200

I think the payload printed on door jamb doesn't include about 150-175lbs for a driver. Anyone have a pic of their door jamb sticker?

After I aquired 3 Great Dane pupperoncinis I couldn't say that anymore.

 

This is exactly why I own a trailer. Plus it generally makes unloading the large haul easier.

 

Every other truck I’ve owned in the manual said payload figures assume a driver is in the car. I need to read this one to see if yota follows that

I also wonder, and maybe someone knows the answer.

Capabilities and payload are a combination of lots of factor. Power needed to move it, frame strength, wheels/tires, bolts, ect.

Is the tundra’s true gvwr limited by the P rated stock tires? Is it possible that was the limiting factor?

 

I did all this a couple months ago. I took my payload of 1200 into consideration. All were under 1000lb each except the sand. It was 1/2 yard of wet sand. The bed dropped pretty low.. (last image) I hauled it 7 miles back home and quickly unloaded it.
