What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I’ll have to look up the exact buyer I bought from but yes they gave me a return shipping label to send in my old one To get my core deposit back...

 

I painted mine myself. Took some hours of sweat and about $75 in paint / supplies.

I think there is a write up in my build thread... if not I can give you some tips. I was also quoted $500 to get mine painted

 

If you're getting the cap color matched - have a good close look at the roof of your outdoor truck. How is the clear up there? Because if you're painting in the same color, just the roof won't be too much more.

 

Check the rear diff pumpkin for rust?

 

Anybody know what kind of spark plugs are required for a vvti 4.7L?

New paint match would look way better, in your case, even though its ‘blended’.

 

Be careful buying cheap "OEM Toyota" iridium plugs on ebay. I bought a set for my wife's Prius. They came from China, but the box said "Orginal Toyota/Lexus Made in Japan". I thought hmm, so they made them in Japan (where it's more expensive) then shipped them to China, then shipped to the US. Seems fishy. The indvidual boxes were also of lower quality (thin cardboard, glue not holding properly) than other Toyota parts I've had in the past.
These are 120K mile plugs. The plugs I took out looked fine at 115K miles. 30K miles later engine has multiple misfires. If you've ever used iridium plugs, you know what they should look like: little pointy electrode, and in this case gapped to .044". Here's what these "iridium" plugs looked like. (There's no way those tips were made of iridium!) Look particularly at the second from the left -- you could drive a truck through that gap!

 

Good post up. Yeah on China ripping us off. I remember when their junk plumbing products hit the markets 20 years ago. Mostly, their problems stem from their bad metallurgy. Hard to duplicate USA steel and I’m glad its coming back.

Not sure about you guys, but the auto stores seem to have better pricing on the spark plugs these days. Fluids not so much. The plugs yes.

 

What are we going to do about this hose?

 

Gonna figure out the part # and go get one from the dealer. depending on price.

What did you have to do? My wheels are about 1-2mm too wide for em to fit. Plus the front plastic hub cover things make it seem impossible in the front.

Well I didn't do anything to the truck today, but I ordered tons of parts.
New grill and emblem, spark plugs, timing belt and water pump kit, weather tech liners and visors.

Once work slows down at the end of June, I'll be doing a complete maintenance overhaul. Plus hopefully my sliders will be here by then.

Edit: well my check engine light came on leaving work this morning. PO441 and PO445 according to my scangauge. Seems there's an issue with my EVAP system. . Add that to the list

 

Oh good question. I guess it all depends on how many coats you do. I think I did close to 5-6 coats. I think I bought 3-4 Cans of Rustoluems Paint/Primer Combo. And then did some clear coat. Then wet sand / polish / wax. Still holding up well. Clear coat is starting to fade a tad up top. But I never waxed that area due to my roof rack.

 

That means $150-200 in material for color matched spray cans, vs. $400 for someone else to deal with it all and a warranty.

I can’t decide how much my time is worth.

 

How much are these matched colored cans?? Luckily the Rustoleum Black matched nicely with Toyota black...

 

Fueled up and hand calc’d 13MPG all city driving with about 400lbs all week.

Went to inspect air filter and it looked clean. Had written the miles on the filter for reference and its been about 7k miles.

 

$20 per 12oz can for 1A0 Platinum Metallic. $10 for can of clear. If I need 3-4 cans of base, plus 2-3 cans of clear, and maybe a few cans of primer, DYI loses its appeal rather quickly.

 

Tested out the new carpet cleaner with a stair attachment to clean the truck interior. It held up really well for 19 years in the sun. Now it’s sitting outside drying in the sun.

The noise in the back is still there and it’s still drying me crazy. I need to figure out where my dad is hiding his GoPro to go try and record that noise.

 

It's done. I gained exactly 2". The drivers side is 1/2" lower than the passenger.

I now have a problem with ABS kicking in at random stops. Looks like I'll have to replace a wheel speed censor.

I'll post a full write up tomorrow. Obviously it will look better once I get wheels and tires.

 

How's this look. I'm a little annoyed I didn't get the normal colored printout.

 

Everything looks ok except the caster. The upper end of the stock setting would be good. I had the same problem with my SPC arms that they didn't want to take the time to adjust the arm.
