Whenever my neighbor lets his grass get too tall, I stand at the end of the driveway and start yelling at the sky to ‘cut your grass’.

My other former neighbor left his Christmas lights up until July one year until I spray painted a staked sign on a large plywood sheet in my yard that said, ‘Come See Christmas Lights in July!’ with an arrow pointed at his house.

HOA the old school way. Would pass on anything HOA today.

Some neighbors are easy to work things out. Others need an HOA to keep them straight.

Pass on this one, or you’ll be more miserable than my Christmas Lights neighbor who ended up moving.

No HOA for me. Did that once, never again. I had a "Tot Finder" sticker on my daughter's bedroom window when she was born and they wanted it removed......I moved out within 6 months.

I wouldn’t ever do that again. We owned some rental property with a pretty easy HOA, and it was still a PITA. We ended up taking over the HOA with a few other property owners to get some things done, changed some bi-laws and cancelled a bunch of leans placed on others unjustly.

Hell, there were places we looked at buying a few years ago that would not allow even the garage door to be open except for:
    Door repair
Driving in or out of the garage.

We decided to get into an area with no HOA or convenances, and just have to follow county code. Personally, I don’t like anyone getting into my business or telling me what I can and can’t do with my home/property.

    I'm backing out.

I don't have any problem with them regulating what's in the front yard or what color the house is. I like the house exactly as is, minus a palm tree in the back that I was gonna rip out immediately. I don't even have a problem with them saying don't have a pile of crap car on jack stands on the driveway, lots of kids play in that neighborhood and that could be bad. Buying a house at SoCal going rate is hard enough, but if I can't use my garage that's where I have to draw the line.

Glad you all see it the same, I was really torn feeling like it's not enough reason to turn away. It's really hard to find a house out here that's priced fair, not a flipper, and doesn't need any work at all. Its beyond rare, but without a garage I'm better off staying in apartments at half the price for now.

I'm feeling bad for the seller, shes been really generous. I'm sure she will have some language for the HOA after this too. When houses go from contract to back on market it scares some potential buyers. I see it all the time and say fuck no something must be wrong with it.

I’ve lived in homes with HOAs for almost 25 years, and never had an issue.

What I’m confused about is all the comments about neighbors. First time the say a word, you explain to them “Report me to the HOA and I’ll do everything I can legally do to make you miserable for as long as you live here.”

That said, it’s never come up. I worry about my shit, the neighbors worry about theirs.

HOA = communist poorly disguised as douche bag American. They have "taxing" authority and fining capacity. And with the $30,000/$40,000/$50,000, whatever $$$ they take annually from the collective, they buy 8 bags of pine bark to jazz up the shitty aging subdivision entry. Pure commie shit.

HOA sucks especially if the board has little nazis. More so in California when it comes to owning gas guzzlers and guns..they will be a PIA to deal with. if you have no other choice then at least get on the HOA board so you can make the rules :)

I understand that completely... It's just not something I want to spend my time with anymore. I flipped house's for years before they started making TV shows about it and pretty much ruined the market for making any real money. I had legal threats out the arse coming at me while I was making those houses better. I never had to pay them off over anything, but it was a huge waste of money and time having to respond to it from my lawyer. There was one HOA that made a deal with the city to enforce their rules. Getting permit's was pretty much out of the question if you were on their radar. I just did the work w/o permits and got the houses sold that I was working on there. I improved the dumps that I bought and they still wanted to be paid...LOL

I’ve heard plenty of horror stories, just never experienced them myself. Maybe it’s just the area I live in. Nice town, but everyone is pretty laid back and minds their own business.

Nope. I'll never live in a hoa neighborhood. I be damned if I spend my hard earned money on a house and property and let some snooty ass asshole tell me what I can and can't do or park what I want to in my own damn yard.

If I want to set in my jack yard and back off, that is my right.

That's the attitude everyone in the neighborhood already had, so it was like a vicious circle, and I was renting the house so all it did was piss me off.

They can fine you pretty heavily. Unfortunately they have pretty good legal backing. I read through their inch thick binder yesterday and it's pretty solid.

I drove through and talked to a guy who lives there, hes a Jeep guy but I don't judge. He said he welded bumpers and sliders and all sorts of shit in the driveway, no problems. I just know my luck and I'll have some bored informants across the street or next door.

Actually yes... if you look in the CCR bylaws you will see that HOAs have the right to fine, lien, and even foreclose on your property if you don’t follow their laws.
I lived in an HOA once, and they were fine while I lived there, but now the house is a rental, and some nosy neighbor has become the “street police” and reports to the hoa every time the tenants even so much as open the garage door too late and the hoa sends me a nasty letter. hoa is like Syphilis, it never really goes away once your infected.

I have a friend that shares his back fence with an HOA neighborhood, but isn't part of it. His house was there before the HOA neighborhood was even built.

The HOA sent him a letter to notify him that they were fining him because his dogs were barking. He ignored it and then the city notified him that he had to pay it or there would be a lien placed against his house. Both the HOA and the city knew his property wasn't part of the HOA.

He took it to court and everything was dismissed. The judge apparently had some choice words for both the HOA and the city.

The Woman and I are slowly starting the process of looking for a house. We both agree that there are two things that are absolute deal breakers: lack of a garage, and a HOA.

It could be the nicest house in town for the best price but if it's in a HOA or has no garage we won't even consider it.

Fortunately, HOA's aren't very common in our town.
