Towing MPG

I have a 2018 Tundra Limited, pulled a small trailer 17 ft weight 3700 lbs, getting 8 mpg in the rocky mountains of Colorado. I recently took a trip from Denver to Wichita with same trailer and got about the same mpg. I guess this is as good as it gets.

 

Towing a 24 pondtoon tips out at 5500. With 35 inch tires and 6 inch lift getting 11-12 at 60mph

 

I agree that’s low

 

With my 21ft travel trailer at 3200lbs I could only manage 10.3 on mostly flat highway so I could see 8 in the mtns. I to thought I would do a little better since my trailer doesn't weigh much but I guess the weight isn't a big factor once your cruising at speed.

 

Iam on all flat ground. I guess you guys with the campers is fighting the wind.

 

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, mostly the aero that matters and not so much the weight.

 

I pull my toyhauler, car trailer and a utility trailer. Speed is the biggest variable you can control. Every 5mph above 60mph cost me about 1mpg regardless of what is hooked up behind my truck.

Headwinds and hills can really affect your mileage into the 7 and 8 MPG area.

 

Dang guys. Glad I don’t pull an camper or enclosed trailer. That is crazy.

 

I love my Tundra and I used to own a 2002 chev 2500 hd with a 6.6L diesel. It actually gave me better gas mileage with a 27 ft HiLo trailer around 18 mpg.

 

The bummer is the small tank at 10.3 my range towing my camper sucks, wish Toyota had the larger tank as an option across the board.

My buddy has a 2012 2500hd just the 6.0 but it returns better mpg pulling his camper which is larger compared to mine. That's crazy.

 

I get 9.5mpg on level roads running 60mph and 8mpg at 75mph.

 

Boy, that's no joke. Seems like I cost myself more time at the fuel station if I try and hurry anywhere with my camper. I finally said to hell with it and do whatever speed it takes to get 10mpg.

 

Update went to a lake an hour away in tow mode interstate 20 miles then into to res lights every mile -two miles. Got 9 MPG. I think I stated earlier I was getting 11-12. That’s from my house to a smaller lake within 10 mins of my house. WOW!

 

I got about 6mpg pulling about 10k lbs (fully loaded) over Kenosha Pass this weekend for some dry camping at 10k feet elevation

I have a 7x12 older steel frame enclosed haulmark and ran the Pa. turnpike sat. To 7 springs resort for an ATV race and running 75-80 mph I got 11.2

 

Pulled my 19' Airstream up the California coast, averaging around 11-12 MPG, going around 55-65.

 

Tank size is big reason I got Tundra. 3 fill fill ups picking up my boat on 6 hour trip and I decided I needed a larger tank. Tacoma got the same 10 MPG at 65-70.

Like your setup. How do the brakds hold up going over that pass or have you upgraded them. I tow a GD 2670MK 7000 lbs. empty 8500 fully loaded. Headed down to Mueller in a couple of weeks. Haven't towed over any significant passes yet but have read a lot about people having brake issues. Dealer didn't set my WD hitch correctly so I have worked on that. Will be picking the camper up in a couple of weeks for a short run so will see how the WD hitch is set now.

 

Yep, I have the nitro 5.29’s now. It still struggles but not as bad

 

I have stock brakes now but will not attempt that again without some brake upgrades lol. My pedal went soft half way through the trip and I puckered. Luckily my trailer has good brakes. To the dealer I go this week but guessing they’ll say I need more bite.

 

I pulled a 21' stratos bass boat from Kansas City to eureka springs this weekend going about 75mph the whole way and averaged about 10.5mpg on tow/haul. Also had a pretty strong head wind which didn't help

 

I can get as low as 6 mpg at times towing my dump trailer out here in MN. Then some days I'll get 10 pulling the same trailer on the same route.
I average 11.7 pulling my flat bed.

I've concluded that what direction the wind blows plays a big roll in what mpgs I get towing not just the grades I'm pulling up. It only took me 198k miles of driving this truck to realize this lol.

 

How do u like your airstream? Thinking of getting either sport or nest but they are xpensive....

 

You guys are making me feel good as I get 14 to 15 mpg when towing doing 60 - 65 my pop up on the high way. My pop up is about 2200 lbs, so I'm a light weight. This includes some mountain passes at 5500. I think the wind resistance is a major factor as well. Also some unimproved roads.

 

I get around 10-11 towing my jeep on the Flatbed total weight of trailer and Jeep is 5-6k in weight.
