What is this??

So was wiring my tow mirror spotlights earlier, and when I opened the dash panel on the drivers side floor. I noticed this big red wire spliced onto the 12v wire I was going to splice into...anyone know what it's for? Couldn't seem to find other tundras with it...

The red wire is T-tapped onto the dark brown wire...this is the first time I opened this part of my truck and I bought it new with 20 miles on the clock...

 

Hell...it does have some black egg shaped device attached to it...microphone maybe

 

Take it back to where you bought it and say.........."What the fK is this????

 

I'm sure they'll say I did it...then try to sell me on fixing it/removing it..then get home $500 later and realize the never removed it.

 

I myself would personally go back and ask "What is this?" "I didn't put this here, please explain what this is." I don't take dealer BS for an answer.

 

Cut the wire and see what quits working

 

Didn't someone post on here about GPS trackers that dealerships were putting on in case they had to repo the vehicle?

 

There was some talk about that a while back.

 

I think it was a term and condition of the loans, etc.

Craziness.

It looks like it has an inline fuse attached to it as well. Do you have any aftermarket items added by the dealer? My first guess would be LED bed lights, followed by tailgate actuator (pop and lock, etc). Anything on your truck that’s not considered “standard”?

 

I do have LED bed lights. Was told it was from the factory...I was watching that YouTube video from trail ridge on installing tow mirrors and they're tundra did not have that red wire tapped into this brown wire. Which in the video they claimed the brown wire was for the bed lights.

 

They can be added by the dealer. Pretty common actually. I’m about 99% sure that’s the power to your bed lights.

 

I'm thinking so too now that you brought it up. Will definetly check tomorrow, I knew you guys would figure it out.

Pull the fuse and see if the bed lights still work.

I have the same T tap on my TSS model with dealer added bed lights.

Where does it end up??

 

That brown wire is for the cargo lights. That's where it is tapped for the bed lights. So if you have bed lights, that's where it's getting it's power. Step #27 in the link in my signature.

It is the same diagram from the PDF that @KnuckleHD posted.

It goes over to a grommet in the passenger floor board, down the factory harness to the lights in the back of the bed.
