The journey back to original greatness starts with a stop at a 4 wheel service shop for a total front rebuild. New Billybob 5100 shocks, OEM LCA’s, CV joints, sway links, brakes, OEM LBJ’s, and cam bolts. This was about $3300 of work labor and materials split about 50/50. Not bad for 2 days work.

Nothing great, but the OEM (for the most part) with the Billys set at one notch up from stock, to offset front spring sag, work well.

My outlook on the truck is as OEM as possible except where it can be made better. Subtle being the key. Trying to keep the truck dynamics as OEM as possible as to eliminate any problems associated with lifts etc.

Next items are like the little things that make life better. Adjusted the front hood tension bumpers to eliminate disconcerting the wobble effect. Removed the OEM truck bed plug from underneath and added an electrical bushing plug up top to facilitate better drainage under/over the OEM plastic bed liner.

Mechanicals were next up after the suspension work. The Valve Cover Gaskets were in need of replacing. Swapped out the old clogged PCV Valve and installed 8 new Denso coil packs.

Installed all OEM stealership purchased parts. I gladly paid the premium as they suggested a few things I would have missed such as new bolts/grommets and PCV grommet.

Performance enhancement was up next once the total truck shake down dust settled and the prior mechanical work was making a huge positive difference.

12 Hole Injector Upgrade using Denso 250cc type. This modification came about from wanting to see if the old injectors were an MPG hog due to age. Figured I’d buy this set of 250cc reman’d injectors as they were very cost effective OEM replacements that made the truck better. Enhancements from the mod were better shifting points, gears holding longer, and noticeable downshifting on deceleration. MPG slightly improved, but negligible. A very nice modification and highly recommended.

    Leak Repairs

Rear Slider window gasket clean up to fix the leaks everyone sees in the floorboard corners and are mistaken for ‘3rd Brake Light’ leaks. In my case, the rubber slider gasket drain ports became clogged both on the gasket and underlying truck body frame. A simple clean up and poking out the holes frees up the draining process. The water should exit out the rear bottom gasket flange.

Discovered some debris build up in the blower assy up next to the heater coil. Removed the Heater Blower Resistor and vacuumed it out and actually was able to get a water hose gun up in and spray the dirt and dust build up on the coils from the blower side hole. Pictures speak for themselves.

Mz Hand Model remarked how difficult it was to see out of the front windshield when driving into the sun. It was pretty sandblasted from years of use so went ahead and had it replaced. Took the side trims back off at a later date and cleaned them up real good (window installer doesn’t do this) and installed some butyl rubber tape for waterproofing. It actually is a great sound proofer as it stops the wind leaks from blowing over those tabs.

Stone Guard. Fab’d it up with some hardware cloth laying around. Spray painted it black and used flexible adhesive to mount it. This was an experiment that ended up staying in place as it looks better than expected. Its much needed to stop rocks from damaging the radiator coils.

Ospho treated and ceramic spray painted the entire exhaust system with Rustoleum. Removed all the old rusted bolts/covers and re-bolted them with the leftover valve cover bolts.

New Cap for $14 is Peace of Mind. These things fail and should be replaced 30-45k miles. Cheaper than a pressure test to just buy new.

    upload_2019-5-31_18-10-35.jpg

Trying out two types of Straight DEXIII (about $14/gal). Sponsored by Corona Extra. Run Test.

    upload_2019-5-31_18-13-39.jpg

Change intervals of the Transmission are same as oil changes. 2500-3k miles employing drain and fill technique (about 3.5 quarts quick drain). Such cheap insurance ($14) and the 4 speed shift butter smooth. No need for ‘flushes’ at these short intervals technique.

    upload_2019-5-31_18-16-33.jpg

With about a 1/2 quart left over leaves enough to ‘suck and fill’ technique the Power Steering Reservoir. This one time I flushed some boogers out by running the Res dry during a ‘suck and fill’ with the engine on (not recommended).

    upload_2019-5-31_18-21-42.jpg

Snake Clamps to stop the leaks at the OEM tired/old clamps. Sealed the deal on a leak that was running down below the engine new the steering rack.

Yes it was. In retrospect, though, it was very cheap as only she required basic maintenance all these years and never let me down once.

Last spring/summer I started thinking about trading in for the new 3rd Gen, but after consulting with my different mechanics they both said she was just getting started at 155k miles at that time. Not to mention not wanting a truck payment of $600-700! Plus high vehicle property tax every year.

Fast forward, from me coming to my senses right away (also joining this site) and deciding on the $4M reinvestment, its been time and money well spent these last 12 months.

This ‘build’ is more of a restoration/maintenance type job than anything. The work effort has been therapeutic, as well. I enjoy the learning, work, and helping people learn along the way.
