Gear ratio

Wanting to know for those who run tires 35s or higher... has anyone changed out their ring and pinion? is this really important or waste of money??? I jus picked up a 4wheelparts free mag n ther was a 2 page deal from G2 axle n gear I do run 35s so I wana know if it's good to do or a waste...anyone? anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

 

Its not really needed when doing 35's, but if you are doing 37's I would highly recommend doing 4.88

4.56 will give you the stock comparison ratio with 35's on the truck if you are really looking to get the low end torque back.

 

What is on Tundra out from stock? I mean the build line

 

I believe its 4.10's, 4.30 if you have the tow package. But if I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

almost all 5.7's come with 4.30's. They are offered with 4.10's but it's very rare that they're in a truck.

That said, our 6th gear is very long. It's all but useless with tires bigger than stock.

If you care about the way that your truck drives when on the highway, and get annoyed that it won't stay in 6th gear during the slightest incline, you will want to seriously consider 4.88's on any tire size besides stock.

I run 33's with 4.88's, I've tried 35's and it sucks. Sluggish and non responsive. If I had to run 35's I'd run 5.14's, but unfortunately 5.14's don't exist for our trucks.

Being that Nitro had the gonads to step up and be the first to come to market with 4.88's for our trucks I only sell Nitro (I can get G2, but prefer Nitro and Nitro is a better price).

Second that on the Nitro gears. That is all we use for the Tundras.

 

4.30 with the 5.7 and 3.91 with the 4.6. Im not sure what it is for the 5.7 without the tow package because the tow package is now standard on the 5.7.

If you are 4wd, then yes they need to be done at the same time. You will destroy your drive train if they are different.

Obviously if you are 2wd, then you only have the rears.

 

I saw the same ad, as far as I can tell the only difference is price between G2(700ish) and Nitro(1200ish). Both are made from 8620 steel and made in South Korea. With the extra savings I can get a Auburn lsd also. Install price was about same as other shops. Also the warranty was better for G2 10 years, Nitro 2 years.

 

The nitro price includes shims and bearings, which you will have to try and source locally if you buy the g2.

And I can do better than that on the nitro stuff

Does anyone make 4.56 gears for a Tundra? I haven't been able to find any other than 4.88s

 

On a 5.7 only 4.88's are available. And only from nitro or g2

There are rumors that g2 is going to develop 5.14's. and I encourage people to call them requesting that.

4.88 brings your ratio 'back to stock' numerically with 35's. but it doesn't compensate for the extra weight. And why would you want to spend a couple grand to go 'back to stock'?

If I had 35's (I could I just choose not to) I would want to run 5.14's. since 5.14 doesn't exist I run 33's with 4.88

 

... I should've never told the accountant I was just about down with the truck. Now, I want 4.88s. Guess I'll justify it with "it'll pull the boat better" Thanks guys. Stupid tundras.com haha

 

It'll tow the boat better, get better fuel economy, the driveline will last long and need less service. And the truck will be safer

Pricing here is probably some of the most expensive around the world, so now you know worse case scenario.

 

Well, unfortunately, I live in a military town, so pricing may not be much better. People are great and very appreciative of our service; however, the automotive industry (dealers, mechanics, etc) love to price gouge the shit out of us bc the town is full of young airman with money in their pockets...and for alot of them, it's the first real job they've ever had, so money burns big holes in their pockets

 

I've searched and read this thread so I understand that since I'm running 37's I need to get 4.88's - my question is, if I don't ever tow anything is it really worth it to drop a couple grand into new gears? Am I damaging anything

 

main reason for gearing is to keep your transmission in its gear more of the time. Without 4.88's your truck is constantly shifting from 6th to 5th, back n forth for no reason. Gearing keeps the tq converter locked up more of the time and keeps the truck in the same gear more of the time. This saves wear on the transmission and saves fuel. And makes the truck more fun to drive,

 

I always recommend people to regear. Keith mentioned many many benefits. In my opinion the greatest Plus is reduced Driveline stress, torque delivered at a lower RPM which is useful for just about everything in the truck and in my opinion the slight increase in fuel economy.

Yes you might have a higher engine RPM but it's all about the engine load. Just because you're turning on a higher engine RPM that does not directly correlate to a decrease in fuel economy because the engine might and probably will be working less.

I would love to have extra coins sitting around your gear in my four wheel drive.

Bought my gears from @dirtydeeds added 37 mickey thompson atzp3 yeaterday. Cant wait to get the gears on.

I regeared my v10 excursion when i lifted and put 37s on and it was a night a day difference. Night and day. Seems like the tundra still has some pep even after the 37s but i plan to tow etc with the truck. My plan is regear and install the hypertech i have in the garage.
