Greetings everyone. My sales person told me that I am able to have a 1,000 mile courtesy check up for my truck, I don't think they do anything other than just check that all the bells and whistles are working and nothing is out of whack? Right now I am at about 700 miles. I'm sure everything is good to go, and I will return at the 5K for the recommended service as well. I have just never heard of this before? Is this something all the dealerships do now or is this something new? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Marty

a courtesy oil change would be nice. unless you're having problems, a courtesy check up sounds like a waste of time.

I'm at 4800 miles and called to set up my service and oil change tomorrow. The lady said, "I think they only change the oil at 10,000 miles". huh? I'm not waiting 10k for my first oil change. I've always been told, and by car guys, to get that first one done soon. They will be changing the oil tomorrow or I'm going to raise hell.

It's a checkup and to get an oil change in case of any metal reside/shavings from a brand spanking new engine.

    I'd go in.

If you have synthetic oil, you don't need to change at 5K (some still do) I change mine every 7-8k to be safe

Like you said before. I've always been told to change the first one soon because its a new motor. After that, I can go whatever they say. I'm supposed to get free oil changes for the first 2 years. Oil is better, but they probably push it out to do less under their service plan, ha.

What Law said. My 2016 has synthetic. Didn't have it changed at 5K.

....this is correct according to Toyota booklet but sometimes you have to fight with SA since many have limited knowledge on the products they work on.

If it's free and you got time, nothing lost and maybe something gained. I was told that no need to "break in" the engine, but try to avoid hard starts/stops for a 1,000 miles to "break in" the engine that doesn't need "breaking in".

My salesman set me up for my first oil change at 6 months and told me exactly what RowdyRon said. And I told him that I would only have 3,000 miles - he said they didn't care. So I show up for my appointment and I was greeted by a nice person who said they would only rotate the tires. What? Then the SA comes over and welcomes me to the shop and then looked at the VIN and said, "Flex Fuel engine, 6 month oil change and tire rotation". After it was done, he said thanked me for coming in and handed me a card with my next appointment...in 6 months.

Bottom line: the FFV engines (3UR-FBE) have not been approved for the extended 10,000 mile service interval. Furthermore, if you are using E85, you should be getting your oil changed on a 2,500 mile interval.

    From Toyota:

    • Only Toyota vehicles in which 0w-20 synthetic oil is required (except for the 2TR-FE and 3UR-FBE Engines*) have been approved for extended oil change intervals of 10,000-miles/12-months. (However, you should continue to check the oil level regularly and top off if needed. That will help your engine get the full benefit of synthetic oil.)

    • Vehicles in which 0w-20 is an option to 5w-20 mineral oil, (or 5w-30), will continue to require 5,000-mile/6-month oil change intervals, even if 0w-20 oil is used.

    • In the case of vehicles with 10,000 mile oil change intervals, the 5,000 mile service interval has not been eliminated. The traditional 5,000 mile maintenance procedures (such as tire rotation) will continue to be required, and the fluid levels (such as brake fluid) will need to be checked and adjusted at this time.

    • If the vehicle operation meets the standard criteria for "Special Operating Conditions" such as: driving off-road, on dirt roads, towing a trailer, making repeated short trips under 32˚ F, or extensive idling; the engine oil must be replaced at 5,000 mile intervals, regardless of what type of oil is used.

*The 2TR-FE (4Runner / Tacoma) and the 3UR-FBE (Flex Fuel Tundra / Sequoia) are the exceptions to this new change interval program; these engines have not been approved for the 10,000 mile interval at this time. A 5,000-mile/6-month oil change interval is still required for these vehicles. Also, the Flex Fuel 3UR-FBE requires a 2,500 mile interval when operated on E85.
