Paying extra for OFF-ROAD edition and then changing everything?

No mine is TRD OR with a column shifter. I actually like the column shifter. One of the few LOL.

 

they should they cost more initially. The only true indication of value is % resale. It would be hard to calculate because you would have to find a large enough sample of both to have a good comparison. This is like people saying 4x4s bring higher resale prices. There may be more demand for them in certain regions but do they actually bring higher resale %s when compared to the original purchase price. Maybe not because dealers have to discount less popular models more to sell them.

 

At least when I was looking for my truck I never saw a center console shift in anything but the TRD packaged trucks. maybe its a second gen thing

 

If I'm doing something like that, it's usually because there's something in the interior that I really like and can't really replicate it elsewhere.

Bought an SR5 TSS because I knew I'd upgrade everything on it. Often wondered the same thing the OP wonders....

 

Exactly what I did.....mainly because the dealers around me won’t get a base sr5 model unless you want to order it. Trd package and above usually with them

 

I chose the Limited because of the interior features. Not cost effective to add interior features afterwards but everything on the outside is very easy to upgrade. The $40.00 TRD OR option was a no brainer.

 

SR5 upgrade gets center console and bigger gas tank I believe.

 

The Off-Road package doesn't really get you that much extra on the Tundra. We get sort of Bilstein 4600s, different 18" wheels, and some stickers. The Tacoma and 4Runner at least get a rear locker.

 

Bilstein 4600, better wheels (IMO), engine skid plate, fuel tank skid plate, all weather floor mats, and decals for $40.00 seems like a good deal to me.

Yeah, with the limited it's cheap, butu with the SR5 it's around $1,000 for the first offroad package

But the $40 is only if you're getting the Limited. with the SR5 it's $1,000

 

This is just an odd thread.

 

I'm not sure of the point of this thread. Is it to find out the reasons one would choose the TRD option or to rationalize a predetermined opinion that the TRD option isn't a good value? Doesn't really matter because for some the reasons behind choosing the TRD option are valid and make good since economically especially for resale value.

I made it because I genuinely wanted to know why people did it. I didn't know all the differences that the packages made and wanted to know peoples' reasons why they did it

 

2nd gens definitely didn't get a bigger tank

 

If you got the TSS OR at least you got some decent tires. I did not want 20s but the BFGs along with rebate offset my dislike for any wheel larger than 18

 

2019 SR5 + TRD OR here. Since buying the truck I've done lots of things but as it relates to the TRD OR package, I've swapped shocks/springs, tires, wheels, engine skid, tow hooks, and floor mats. And I'm about to swap the bedside decals. Only thing left TRD OR of the TRD OR package is the LED headlights and fogs. Might swap the latter eventually too.

So... why? Two reasons, really: (1) I wanted to be able to say I have a "TRD", and (2) as this was my first Tundra I wanted to see what Toyota thought they meant by "off road".

I've enjoyed the first quite a bit. More than I expected. I doubt many of us will admit it, but there's a certain something one gets from knowing you've got a "TRD". I mean, how many people bought the "SS" or "RS" or "Mach1" or... back in the day and immediately started making them faster? Adds to the enjoyment of the whole experience.

The second... well I'm coming from a very nicely modified Raptor. The stock TRD OR was just a bridge too far. Again, I want to enjoy the Tundra experience. Modifying it has got me just that.

PS: I made the decision rather quickly to swap stuff out. For that, I was able to sell all the take offs as "almost new" to people locally that are glad to have it. Made back about $1500 all told.

 

I cannot find the TRD OR package on a build in Tx any longer but I know when I bought mine it was a lot more than $40

 

I'm upgrading my TRD 4X4 suspension and skid to Pro parts. Reason I got a TRD is because it was a better deal than a non TRD at the time. All I wanted was a double cab 4X4 tundra that wasn't red or silver. If I can find new Pro wheels, I'll probably buy them.

I can't answer for other folks, but one thing I KNEW I wanted was CEMENT, and it can only be had in certain trim levels. Also the LED headlights... Didn't change those. Kept my OEM wheels for DD'ing and only use my aftermarkets for fitting 35in MT's which I swap on/off for off-road adventures. OEM's for the better mileage when ferrying around kids/going to work.

 

I also knew I wanted the cement and liked the LED headlights.

 

It may be an SR5, but it is not a base SR5. It would have to have a certain trim to be cement.

You caught me, except the sticker. I got the TRD Offroad for the 18" wheels and I got the Limited for the dual climate. Then I changed the front coilovers and ended up getting a set of RW wheels.

 

You're assuming with this that everyone paid sticker price for their TRD models. In my anecdotal case, I negotiated $4K and dealer fees off of my sticker price. I paid, all told, essentially the base SR5 price. But I still have the value of the TRD package that will come in handy come resale time.

 

See, that's something I wasn't really thinking about. I was looking more at MSRP straight from Toyota.

 

so are you saying you cannot negotiate a discount on a base SR5? It may not be as much in pure $s but I bet the 5 is the same. There are some models that you can get a bigget discount on like here in Tx when they have a glut of TSSs. TSSs are jacked up to start with then they offer larger rebates to bring them back in line, It is all mind games like GM when they start offering 25% of MSRP. When I bought mine I got a dealers best price on a TRD model. At the time I did not even know what a TSS was. When I saw the tires I knew it was what I needed. Basically I took the best price on the TRD and added the extras that were on the TSS to determine if I was getting a good deal.

 

Actually just did the wheel swap last night. Walked into the garage at 5:30pm, walked back into the house at 6:15. That included getting all the tools/jack etc. together, changing the wheels and putting everything away afterwards. Also included a quick chat w/ my neighbor.
