First off, I give credit to Safety77 on Tundratalk as it was his post that got me all set with this. If you have OEM tow mirrors, it is very easy to retain your BSM functionality. The picture with the safety pins shows the wires for the BSM light. Add a LED to your sail panel and you are all set. I used bullet crimps so I could disconnect in the future and also allow me to easily swap the wires in case I got the polarity wrong.

BAD, does RCTA still work with this modification? It looks good to go, but please keep us updated on how it works in the real driving conditions.

I'd assume so as all that was done was to cut the wires that went to the LED in the mirror and relocated them inside. I'll certainly update if I notice anything out of the ordinary.

A little of this and a little of that.
Great mod. I plan to get some tow mirrors w/ blind spot from www.1aauto.com they have them right now for around $250

I’ve been leaning towards doing this mod myself.
Exactly which wires did you cut?
I know you have the photo, but I didn’t follow exactly which 2 in the pic they were.

    Thanks.

Its a bit tricky to see in the picture, but looking at the plug from the inside (which is the pic I have there), its the top right wire and on the bottom row its the 5th wire in. Sorry I can't say for sure what the wire colors were. You can always test before hand (like I did before I did any cutting) with some safety pins pushed into the connector to be sure that the LED comes on. Turn ignition on and BSM lights go on for a bit. After that you can just press BSM button on and off to trigger lights. If light doesn't go on, just switch the wires on the LED.

So is this your 2016 listed in profile? Only asking because after installing Toyota tow mirrors(which i knew would not have BSM) now getting malfunction showing for it. Cheers.

Yup, on my 2016. You are getting the error because the system is sensing that there are no lights coming on. Since the light was in the original mirror, and now you have none, you'd need to wire in some lights as I did and then the error will go away. It's really not a big job at all to put a couple of LEDs in there and mount them in the sails.

Yes, RCTA is totally unaffected by this mod.

Thanx. I run a motorcycle shop so I am fluent in LED. I'll play around and see if I can get it sorted. I hadn't seen anybody on the write up talking about.

I'm a little confused...…….so you just tie into the 2 wires shown with an LED light?

Sure do. It's the two wires that fed the light in the non tow mirror. If there is no light connected, you get system error, if you have bsm turned on.

TRD rear sway bar, console organizer, stubby antenna, LEDs for cabin, cargo, license plate, and reverse lights, power-fold mirrors, Westin nerf bars, full stereo upgrade. Future - color-match grill surround/bulge, mirror caps, handles, plasti-dip badges.
I had to do this exact thing on my '18 Limited when I did the power folding mirror mod. I got a pair of mirrors from a '12 limited, but they don't have BSM. I just installed LEDs in the sails and it works great, both for BSM and RCTA.

Weird question but... Just installed the Toyota tow mirrors. The mirrors are uneven in distance from doors. Passenger side is swept back further. Anybody else seen this.

If I remember correctly, it's a bit tight getting all 3 screws in. I'd undo, give it a good shove and put the nuts back on.

I didn't see anything under the search feature. I will double check my install when I install the BSM led to correct the "malfunction"

I tried this on my 2018 Limited but not working. Those are the only two wires that do not have corresponding posts in the replacement mirror connector, so its got to be them, right? A quick shopping trip resulted in a couple of alligator clip wires (red & black) and a couple of very different LED bulbs, one an auto 12.8V, 1.0w amber, the other a 2w that has 120 lumens - didn't really expect it to work but the other one, I did. Where did you get your LEDs?

Good that the lights work now. I don't have much for suggestions for the error message other than maybe disconnecting the battery for a bit to see if that clears it.

When I did my LEDs, I had purchased just a set from Amazon, simple 5mm 12v amber LEDs. I originally wired them with resistors and they appeared to work as they lit up when I first started the truck, but as soon as the BSM or RCTA system was activated, I got the warning on the dash about a BSM/RCTA malfunction. I removed the resistors and it's been working fine since. Over a year and no issues.

Almost 100% certain that it's because you only ha e one light connected. I just had my door panel off and broke a wire on one LED. Had the error until I fixed the light.

Hmmm. There doesn’t seem to be a way to manually activate the BSM on my truck. Did the light go off before you took it for a drive? I haven’t tried driving it to activate, just used the dash menus to change the bulb brightness . Worked but didn’t affect the alert warning. I’ll try disconnecting the battery today.

Everything seemed to be fine when I just started the truck up, but failed once I was driving around and the systems were triggered naturally. The computer is definitely sensitive to the resistance on the circuit, so you might want to make sure the LEDs you chose don't have built-in resistors.
