Used truck 105k, never had tranny service. Problem?

How's it going fellas and lady fellas, I've been a member over at Tacomaworld for I think close to 7 years now. Well I think its getting close to me becoming a Tundra owner soon, I found a local truck owned by a lady for the last 8 years and it seems like a pretty nice truck. It has 105,000 miles and its a 2006 Double Cab with the 4.7. She had Toyota Replace the Timing belt/water pump/thermostat last summer and it has been maintained by Toyota since she's owned it. However She says she doesn't recall ever having the transmission serviced... So my question to you Tundra guys is having 100,000 miles and no tranny servicing how has this affected the life of this transmission?

I appreciate the help, I plan on going to look at the pickup this afternoon.

 

Welcome to the site! I had an 06 DC 4.7 as well and loved it. Can't help ya with the trans question but I'm sure someone with more experience will chime in.

A 4.6 is fine if you're not doing too much towing

 

First gens had the 4.7! Great engine IMO, I used it to tow a big enclosed trailer for work as well as my boat.

 

All I will tow is really my quad and maybe a 14' steel side by side trailer once a year. the girl who owns it now drives it 50 miles to and from work everyday.

 

Thanks buddy, Yeah id love a 5.7 but I cant see myself dropping that much coin for a truck ill literally drive 1-2 times a week.

 

Not saying it's not a bad engine by any means (it's a tundra!!!!) just depends on your needs (and wants)

I have a 4.6 and I love it! Plenty of power for my lifestyle!

Not sure about the tranny but maybe bring it in for that just as a precaution if you end up taking the plunge?

 

If you have the transmission serviced, make sure a flush ISN'T part of the process. Flushing destroys transmissions. A fluid and filter change should be all that's necessary. When you flush a transmission, or an engine for that matter, you stir up a lot of crud that was perfectly happy where it was. That crud finds its way into valve bodies and passageways that can't handle it. With luck, a fluid and filter change (and maybe a can of B-12 followed by another fluid and filter change) will help a flushed transmission, but it's usually a lost cause. The only positive thing a transmission flush does is to help the mechanic make his next boat payment.

Now, to the real question. How was the truck used before you bought it? If it was used for towing, or hauling, a fluid and filter change is probably a good idea. If it was only driven short distances in town, servicing the transmission is also a good idea. Local trips tend to put a lot of condensate in the fluid. I've seen well maintained cars that were only locally driven with rust on the dipstick. If it was use for light carrying, and driven a mix of highway and town, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I believe your model has a dipstick on the transmission. Smell the fluid and check the color. If it's clean and doesn't have an "off" odor, it's probably fine. If you have any doubts, a fluid and filter change is cheap piece of mind.

 

It will definitely be plenty for what you are going to use it for. Sounds like it has been taken care of if she did the timing belt/water pump on time. One other thing to watch out for on those 1st gens is the secondary air injection problem. May want to just ask her if she has ever had a code for it. The valve will get stuck open or closed and throw a code, which freaks a lot of people out because Toyota will ask for about $2000 to fix it. Luckily there is a bypass module that can be installed for less than $200 to trick the computer into thinking it is functioning properly. Its a useless feature anyway, and a pretty stupid design. All it does it reduce emissions during a cold start, doesn't effect performance at all.

Had the problem on mine, but noticed that when it got warm out the code would go away and come back during the winter.

 

Ok good to know thanks for that, I've read about that on 2nd gen Tundra's but didn't know it was an issue with the 1st's. Is that something I can expect to go out if it hasn't in the 8 years she has owned it?

I will definitely check tranny fluid when I look at the rig, She doesn't pull any trailers and she said its mainly just her commuter. If I was to buy it I would do a drain and refill plus a filter change within the week of me owning it.

 

I wouldn't necessarily say that you should expect it, just something to keep in mind if it ever does pop up. Not a huge deal though since its an easy fix and doesn't effect the truck at all. Have heard of some instances where it causes trucks to go into limp mode, but on mine it just threw a code and wen't away on its own after it got hot outside again so I didn't even bother with the bypass, but probably would have done that mod if I kept the truck.

I think it was more common on the 2nd gens, but it is definitely a possibility on the 1st gens.

 

The air pumps and valves are much worse on the 2nd gen. They primarily affect the 5.7 and 4.6. There are warranty enhancements in place to fix those issues for free in most cases. (dependent on age and mileage)

As far as the transmission, you'll need to determine if it is TYPE-IV or World Standard. Some of the later 1st gens switched over to World Standard transmissions but I'm not sure what determines which transmission they received. The TYPE-IV transmission will have a red dipstick near the firewall on the passenger side. The World Standard transmission will not have a dipstick.

Personally, I don't recommend any transmission flushes. The appropriate Toyota ATF is all they need, if properly maintained.

All this talk about lady fellas and trannies makes me think you should get Caitlin Jenner to chime in about fluid changes and aging problems...

 

I just read through the scheduled maintenance guide for the '06 Tundra. There is no actual interval for transmission fluid, but rather it needs periodically inspected and replaced if dirty.

 

My old 2007 Limited 4.7 had this issue, my CEL came on the truck still drove perfectly, but I took it to Toyota anyway, they determined it was the secondary air pump and since I bought the extended warranty when I purchased the truck they covered the cost 100%

 

It is primarily 2nd gen 5.7, but that's because most of the trucks with pumps at this point are 2nd gen 5.7s. I've done a couple sets on 4.7s but way more on 5.7s and 4.6s.

 

OP, you might consider taking the truck to a mechanic that you trust and have them do a pre-purchase inspection.

 

Ended up not buying it, Drove it around and honestly it felt way to gutless for what I was looking for. Plus he had no coolant in the overflow reservoir, looking at buying a 2008 5.7 now.
