Think I asked this in another cam tower leaking thread...

Has anyone reported catastrophic engine failure due to this leak or is it negligible enough to not notice between oil changes. I've seen everyone practically has a little seepage, and although annoying, i haven't seen anything negative actually happen because of this?

Just curious as I bought an extended warranty and dont know if I should do this now or just wait 5 more years and do it right before the warranty expires.

they did it on mine as well when doing both towers. I think it's part of the process.

They did mine but just the top of the timing chain cover when they did my cam tower. they didn’t take the timing chain cover completely off on mine.

I guess they should of eh, since I have to go next week for a fix. timing chain cover leak.

Not sure why you'd want to wait. If you're gonna do it then do it now so you have some warranty left in case anything comes up as a result.

Has anyone’s leak gotten significantly worse? My 2014 definitely has the leak, but it seams very minor. I never would have noticed it without this thread. My truck is about to hit 59k miles and I’m on the fence about taking it to the dealership. I’ve been to 2 different Toyota dealerships near me and both were completely incompetent for the most minor things. I swore I’d never take it back.

My truck has had nothing but maintenance done, it’s been amazing. The thought of one of these places opening it up scares me.

I should mention I had a cam put in my vette last year that was nothing but problems since they opened it up. Long story short.. I ended having to buy a whole new motor. It was a nightmare, so I really don’t want them touching my Tundra unless it’s absolutely necessary. What do you guys think?

It's ok to leave it as long as your not dripping significant oil on the exhaust. I would just shop for a better dealer, and have an honest convo with your service person. They won't be assigning this to an oil change kid (hopefully). Confirm the master tech doing the work has done several of these repairs before. It's a big job, but in the end it should be an easy one for an experienced and organized tech.

Because it's a major hassle and I need my truck 7 days a week right now. If something does happen it'll be covered either way. Just didnt want to lose the truck for a week or two if this is something I can schedule for the end of the year or something

The dealer has had mine this whole and needs one more day. I told them that I use my truck everyone everyday and they gave me a loaner truck. You can try that option

Thanks, I’m in NYC. My closest dealer doesn’t even keep Tundras on the lot. I had to go to NJ to buy it. I dealt with their “master mechanic” before. I had a grinding in 4 wheel drive. They told me it was fixed. Got it back, still did it. Brought it back, they told me I needed a new solenoid valve. I told them that wasn’t what I was hearing that it was engaging but something was rubbing. Finally got under it myself (winter) to find a bent skid plate touching the front axel. It was their master mechanic I was dealing with for that. I dealt with him because these guys rarely see tundras.

There’s actually a lot more to the story and some shady stuff going on there. The other dealer was worse. Charged me for work they didn’t do etc. I do everything myself now or have a guy I trust. If anyone had work done in the NYC or NJ area they recommend maybe I’ll see what they say. Appreciate the input. So far the truck has been flawless.

New member here primarily because of this issue. I have a 2011 Limited double cab that has been bulletproof and was planning on keeping it long term and then I heard about this cam tower issue. It seems fairly widespread and even though mine does not appear to have any issues at 61k miles that doesn't mean it won't happen. I'm well out of warranty and really didn't want to start dumping major money in this rig. It's why I bought it new 8 years ago. No I wonder if it's time to punt.

I am just going to rant so I apologize. But this process has been beyond frustrating. My truck has been torn apart three times now because every time they get it back together and start it up it leaks oil. I am so concerned I will have nothing but problems going forward because of how many times they have taken the engine apart. I am tempted to trade it in and go get myself a 2500 diesel. Sorry end of rant

Welcome! Keep it what if the leak never happens. And if the leak happens call Toyota USA and Tell them this is unacceptable and see what they can do for you, like members on here have done.

Thanks I appreciate it. I know they are trying their best. The head mechanic is a tundra owner. Just annoyed that a brand new vehicle needs this type of repair

It seems like it's happening more on the newer trucks which is surprising. I figured something like this would take 50-100k miles to show up. Very discouraging. It's not like the rear wheel sensor I had to replace for $260.00 ( did tick me off a bit tho). This is tearing the top half of the motor apart. I'm not sure I'd want to go through that regardless of who's paying for it.

    Hello all,
First time posting but I have been monitoring this thread since Jan/19 as I noticed that my 2014 Tundra had been leaking. Both banks were repaired under the power train warranty on Jan. 11/2019 at 94495kms(58700miles). Over the last month or two, the engine seem nosier...nothing drastic though. I blamed it on the cold weather we had up here in Canada. Then I noticed a louder ticking present on cold start ups, similar to what you would hear when a lifter bleeds back. It only lasted a second or two but it was consistent. Never any drivabilty issues or warning lights present. I decided to pull the oil filter to see if everything looked ok but was disturbed with what I found. Metal filings throughout the filter. The truck has now 97699km(2000miles since repair) as of today. Its at the dealer as we speak. It is now out of power train warranty by 3 weeks. The dealer said he would try his best to work with Toyota on this. One of my concerns was that they never change the oil/filter after the repair..... isn't this part of the procedure or am I mistaken?? I have attached link to the photo oil filter photo

I wonder it someone used a wire wheel to clean off the original sealant......Hmmmm?

Ya when they finished mine and I brought it home, I opened the hood and I found a stainless iron wire sponge by my fuse box lol.
It could be that too. But I also came back real early for an oil change, I believe it was 500km after the repair.

I had the same findings with mine, took like 3 oil changes to remove the debris from the motor, I to feel they should give you an oil change as part of the procedure. I took pictures of my filter every time to document the findings in case I have any engine issues later on. But I definitely don't have a good feeling about it for the long haul.

Happened with mine, I had pieces of wire wheel in my filter so who only knows what that did floating around the inside of my truck or if any is caught anywhere still in the motor.

I’ll know tomorrow or Friday what’s taking place hopefully. Can anyone confirm if the oil change is required as part of the cam tower seal repair?

I believe all of the 5.7L engines are produced at Toyota's Huntsville, AL plant.

Finally got the truck back. The mechanic said there were gaps in the gray sealant toward the back of the engine. He said it looked like a machine ran out of sealant during the process. He took his time to apply the black sealant appropriately and that’s why he tore it apart twice. He said as a fellow tundra owner he couldn’t let it leave the shop with being less than perfect. So I feel better. And hopefully I get some trouble free miles

    good news.

and yes, I suggest getting an oil change at the 200 miles or less post surgery then another one after at 1,500 miles.
IIRC I did 3 oil changes post surgery and with less than 3,000 miles: 200, 1500 and 3000. Maybe too much but oil is cheap.

Changed my oil today since having both cam towers resealed. ~200 miles later and the oil filter looks pretty good. There was no sludge on the drain plug either.
