I have been looking at a lot of trucks lately and am curious if it's worth buying a 2017 over saving a little to buy a slightly used 15 or 16. I had a sales guy tell me there was some sort of valve change with the 5.7 for 2017. Apprantly to improve fuel mileage. Does anyone know more about this?

Is that when they started the 38 gallon tanks?

I looked for used before I bought mine new. Problem was, I couldn't find a decent priced used one. It seems Tundras hold their value pretty well. I was finding used ones with 40k to 50k miles for just a few thousand less than what I could get a new one. Decided to go new.

As far as the new valves in the 17's, I seriously doubt that is the case. Toyota hasn't touched that engine since 2007.

Even if that made sense, you couldn't get me to spend thousands more to save what probably is almost a negligible mpg increase

Besides colors, nothing changed between the '16 and '17 from what I can see. There are rumors that they may release a totally new Tundra in 2018 but no one knows for sure

I searched for used as well. Found the new for cheaper than all the used 3rd gens, for the options that I wanted.

I wouldn't let it get to me even if it ended up being true. Go to the Tacoma forums and see how many new Tacoma owners wished they kept their previous generation truck. As much as I will always love Tacomas, the new engine is leaving a lot to be desired and a lot of guys are having some pretty big issues with vibrations, wacky transmissions, rear ends going out, leaking sunroofs. sometimes newer isn't better.

This is exactly the experience that I am having.

And on the valves that's what I thought as well. Good to know I'm not missing something.

So the general consensus is that not much has changed for 2017?

I would love to find a good deal on a used truck but I am seeing used trucks with 20k-50k miles for only a few thousand less than new.

This all comes down to preference...but my thinking when I bought my 2016 used w 12k was, hey, I could make my truck damn close to perfect by doing the mods I want w the few thousand I saved.

It's not like you're sacrificing reliability by buying a Toyota with a few miles on it

    Flux capacitor!
I have a 2017 Platinum now and had a 2015 Tundra Platinum until a week ago. The only changes that I noticed between my 15 & 17 were the side monitoring mirrors, 38 gallon versus the 22 gallon gas tank & the trailer package. At least those are the major things I see so far. My friends who work at the plant said the next big Tundra change will be in 2019. Still no word for sure on a diesel yet.
