Snowing here again! My poor white truck is looking... not so white.

On the plus side I used this crappy weather to order some new stuff for the truck.
    New stuff on the way:

    ARE Canopy
    OEM Tundra Box Mat
    Console organizer
Tundra Lettering for the tail gate
    Shortie antena
    Dual usb charger

    Boredom has its costs lol.

Kinda makes me glad I have the smaller tank. Yeah, I have to take it more often, just not as deep.

There's a reason I'm setting my truck up to carry 80 liters of fuel in Scepter MFC's and bring my passport with me when I drive back to Abbotsford to visit family. I'll be damned if I'll pay BC fuel prices.

I also fish and camp in northern BC often. Tumbler Ridge was 1.40+ last summer. I can only imagine what it will be this summer.

Just put a non-essentials spending freeze on our household accounts. We got told at work yesterday that there's a good chance of lay offs coming at the end of the month. :(

Lots of bids out, nobody pulling the trigger yet. They talk about the lay offs being temporary, only for a month or two but dunnp if I believe that. The only upside is due to my length of service they'll need to give me 5 weeks of notice. Alot can change in a week, nevermind 5 weeks.

Seriously hoping we keep working. I don't like my job much and I'm working on a career change but having to find something new before I'm fully ready would suck. Been with this company for 6 years. Planned on 1 to 2 more before pulling the plug. :(

Thanks guys. We'll see how it goes. If I do get laid off I'll use the time to finish a couple courses I'm doing. If I don't get brought back, I'll have to do figure out what to do then. There's other work here, but it's mostly a choice of a major paycut or being out of town for a long rotation. I'm done with field work, and want to be home every night. I'm kicking around the idea of starting a new apprenticeship, maybe carpentry. Lots of construction in town.

    Oh nice! First question lol.

I have a jman red seal ticket in welding, been in the trade for 10 years, spent 4 years in residential and commercial construction before them. I havr forklift, skid steer and telehandler experience too.

Would that get me a higher starting wage as a first year apprentice?

From what I can tell, first years here start around $18 - $20 per hour, give or take. I feel that with my experience I'd be worth $25 ish. The learning part would mainly be the codes, carpentry specific techniques and lingo.

Totally agree. Plus, Aaron sounds like a reliable, hardworking guy. I know when I was hiring guys, time on the job or Jman creds meant less than nothing to me. Lots of guys with Aaron’s background/experience/attitude got big raises after proving themselves for a month or two. ‘Talk and paper certs are cheap- show me whatcha can do’, is my way of doing things.

Exactly! One thing about the carpentry trade- smart, reliable, hardworking guys make their way up the pay scale quick. :)

I’ve had Jmen, who were slugs, making way less than guys with no certs and 5 years on the job. Sometimes that red seal doesn’t mean squat.

Agreed. @Outbound to be honest my ticket didnt (doesn’t) mean much. The fact that carpentry is an unregulated trade means if you work hard and know how to do it, the paperwork is kind of useless. A guy can build a house without papers just as well and a guy with papers if they can. The only real advantage of apprenticing is if the company you work for wants you to, it shows dedication to them.
