Who has subwoofers?

Going to be installing new stereo and speakers.

Wondering who has installed subwoofers in their 1st Gen and what kind of box? Also where did you hide the amplifier? Lets see some pics..

I have a 1000w amp in the storage compartment under the rear seat. Pulled the lower rear seat from behind the driver and bolted in a box with an Alpine Type R 12. I can take some pics tomorrow.

There isn't much space in access cabs to sacrifice for a sub. I used to have no back seat at all and a huge ported box bolted to the floor. It hit super hard but eventually I lost the lust for that much base and downsized. I'm planning to downsize again, not sure what route I will take yet. Either a pair of 8s in the storage or when I ditch the bench for bucket seats I may build a box as a center console. I want a less visible system.

Im DC but ive seen subs done under the rear seats in the AC. The 2 8's are exactly what I was looking for regarding sound quality. The entire system sounds amazing and is completely hidden, unless you are really looking for the amps under the seats.

 

If I didn't haul my dogs around with the rear seats out, I'd do this. Might build a plywood platform for them and do it anyway.

 

I bought a cheap steel mesh grill for when my pup is in the back. He lays right over it and loves it.

 

Have a link for it? I've been meaning to build that platform for awhile just because of how unlevel the floor is back there but that might save me the trouble.

I had the 12" JLaudio stealth box in my center console and it was amazing. I never missed having any storage there and it thumped! I had a crewmax, so I took out the ridiculous little pocket behind the rear seats and put my amp, and x-overs back there. Then I put the Nav unit, processor, and xm under the passenger side rear seat cubby.

I installed a Kenwood KSC-SW11 powered sub under the passenger seat in my '07, I think it would be a great choice for any 1st gen truck.

 

I have a Kenwood KSC-SW11 in my 06 double cab. I took the jack out of the storage compartment under the rear passenger seat and just put the sub woofer in there with the lid off the storage compartment. The powered sub woofer won't rattle the windows but sounds good with my Alpine head unit and aftermarket speakers.

I could have done a better job running the wires under the carpet. Since I never fold the back seat forward I don't really care.

 

Nothing fancy but it's been working for almost ten years. The amp is in the compartment behind passenger, I leave the seat up to let it cool. I'm tired of the sub taking up so much room though, I want to do something less obvious but it will take a long time.

 

I had one of these in my first Tundra. It worked great! I had 2 8” Rockford Fosgates connected to a Elemental Design amp.

I was thinking about getting another one, but you’re right they are pricey!

 

I went with the "OEM Bazooka" option in my dbl cab. Sounds OK for what it is and plugged right in. But for any serious bass you'll need a dedicated amp / sub.

 

This seems like the place to ask you sound pros about the best door speakers to replace the OEM in my 2002. I’d like to replace all 4 door speakers at some point down the road.

Looking for plug and play without retro fitting/cutting/etc. Not looking for mac daddy speakers either. Just something nicer. Still have the OEM stereo, but may change that also after the DIY speakers install.

The new stereo will be a basic, but better the OEM, type situation as well.

Edit: What do you do about those tweeter little speakers up near the front door handles?

 

I've been looking on crutchfield and there are many options. I'm thinking about going with jbl unless someone on here talks me out of it.

 

You'll get better sound out of the speakers if you also replace the stereo. I'm not sure why.

I went with JVC on mine and it didn't require any special installation work. Crutchfield is a great website for researching. Sometimes they run deals where you get 1/2 off speakers if you purchase a stereo. That's what I did. The total cost for a stereo and 4 speakers was $130.

I'm not sure how much you use your phone but my favorite part about upgrading the stereo is that I now have Bluetooth capability. It came with a tiny mic that I mounted on my A pillar. I can also stream podcasts and music from my phone. It really helped modernize the old truck.

As for the tweeters, I left those alone. I suspect most people do the same.

I'll add that I wish I had gone with a double din and added a backup camera. You don't have a camper shell so visibility probably isnt a concern.

 

I think JBL would be a fine choice. Most of the speakers are in the same price range and I really think they all put out similar performance until you dive into the really expensive ones. I'm sure you'll be happy with any brand you pick.

 

Have an 02 also, and will replace door speakers with same dimension as OEM speakers. As far as replacing the tweeters so high up where the OEM's are, quality replacements might be too bright and thereby won't sound good up there. I have infinity's which are bright enough already, so up there it might be too much for me.

 

It's all about what you like, so go around to stores and listen to various speakers. Nothing wrong with JBL but some say too bassy, and some say Infinity's are too high and some say Rockford Fosgate are the all around best sounding speakers. I replaced some boat speakers with BOSS and darn it those cheap speakers sound really good out there on the water and that's what will stay on the boat. Will like to know what speaker brand you like after listening to as many as you can.

 

You can have your dog back there with no screen with a downward facing sub.

 

Have 10" JL Audio Subwoofer and will either make it fit or just remove the back seat so the woofer/amp box custom made for a Chev Silverado will fit back there.

I used the cheapest Rockford Fosgate 6.5" 3-way speakers I could find on Amazon to replace the 4 door speakers, left the upper tweeters in place and working as well. Gave it a decent soundstage and was way better than my Jensen HU with stock speakers alone which was already an improvement over the stock headunit with stock speakers.

The reason a headunit replacement can make even crappy paper speakers better is because stock headunits (especially back in the days these trucks were new) were an afterthought and don't send anything remotely resembling a clean signal to the speakers. Nowadays, stock headunits are much better but most are still not as good as a decent replacement.

 

I want someone to give these a go. They are the exact same size and ohm rating as the OEM speakers (for the dbl cab anyway) and are pretty cheap...
