    Hi guys,

I had my keys stolen yesterday. My fault as Im sure i left them in my communal mailbox in my complex. Ive checked with the leasing mgr and noone turned them in. I didn't realize they were missing until this morning. Oddly, when I walked out to my truck this morning to see if I left them in there I saw my alarm was on yet my driver's door was unlocked. I didn't notice that anything was missing but nonetheless that's weird.

Thats the unfortunate scenario, now here's my question... can I have a locksmith reprogram my spare key for my ignition which will render the old stolen key useless? Secondly, my old key will still work for the door lock cylinder in the driver side so what is the best route to get a new cylinder to match the new reprogrammed key? Of course, I will also have to buy a new alarm system seeing as I only have one key fob for it and they have it. Any help with this expensive endeavor is greatly appreciated.

    Alot of them
I would get the truck towed to a safe location to start with so it doesn't get stolen.

I would get an entire new set of keys cut.I would also start by talking to a good locksmith and see what they recommend. They can probably re-key all your doors and tailgate. I would check and see if they could re-key your ignition switch as well. If they can’t, get a new ignition switch and set of keys programmed and cut to fit. Then take it to a locksmith and have him re-key any exterior locks to match your new key.

So I take it they didn’t get your alarm fob?

    Best time to go keyless.

That way the key wont be needed because there wont be an ignition

Yes, get everything re-keyed and or reprogrammed.
You may want to file it with insurance just in case whoever has the key actually steals it.
And see if the insurance will cover the cost.

I lost a set of keys for 2016 and the dealer removed that key in the ecu when he got me another one.

After researching online I discovered that some insurance companies do cover the cost for reprogramming keys and do not count it as a claim nor do you have to pay a deductible. Unfortunately State Farm is not one of those companies. I tried that route just a short while ago and was told I would have to make a claim which I do not want to do so I'll just pay out of pocket

That is definitely an option. Pricey, but an option. I have also been searching for 2010 keyless entry door handles for my Tundra and I'm not seeing anything available. Is the keypad on top of the door handle out of date now?

Im still confused as to what I do first. The dealership reprograms me a new key and THEN i replace door handle lock cylinder to match my new key? I do have a spare key that I lll go get recoded, the problem is that key is also the key for unlocking my driver side door, and the thief has a copy. I could change the cylinder and get a new key for that, but I don't want to have a separate key for the door and a separate key for the ignition

Get your new keys and have a lock Smith change the tumblers.

    1) Locksmith, cheapest route. In my area there are a couple reputable ones who can come out and rekey and reprogram the system at your location. 2) Or tow to a stealership and have the ignition replaced and a new fob. They might even do the rekey, but it will be expensive.

The best thing to do is buy new cylinders from Toyota. They aren't hard to install. Then reset your computer's (either on your own with TechStream or having Toyota do it) memory for both the FOBs and keys. I personally wouldn't go the locksmith route simply because if the reset is done wrong then the lost FOB/ key could still work. This is one of the few times I would pay a stealership to get it right.

You could go cheap and just reprogram the computer so the key couldn't start the truck and the FOB didn't work but the key would still unlock the door. Another option would be to call a few junk yards. Tell them your problem and that you have a fully functional set of locks you could give them in exchange so you might get a good break on the price. You could change just the door lock and have different keys for the door and ignition.

I've seen people who take the lock apart and file down the tumblers but what they end up doing is making it so the old key still works plus any new key. You really need to replace the tumblers. I'm not sure if it's possible to do. The concept of a lock is that even if two trucks have the same key the chances of the person coming across the other vehicle with the same key is so remote that they don't worry about it. In your case you need the old key to not work. Make sure the locksmith knows this.

That is some sage advice on checking with a junk yard. Im gonna do that tomorrow. I guess I wouldnt mind having two different keys seeing as I never actually use the key in the door, who does?!?! If I can get a new Clifford alarm fob ( theoretically a new reprogrammed fob essentially makes the stolen fob useless)... I could be wrong on that. Perhaps I just need to purchase and install a brand new alarm system. I purchased Tile for my new set of keys. This ranks right up there with losing a wallet, possibly worse, definitely more expensive. Suck. I need to watch a Saint Jude Children's Hospital commercial to put my life back into perspective
