Not a dumb exhaust question (I think :) )

So first post here fellas. Just bought a '16 Platinum. Got the wheels and tires ordered. Looking at exhaust. I've looked at the threads about exhaust. I think I've read all of them. So I've done my due-diligence. But......

Can you tell me why a guy wouldn't just put an aftermarket muffler on his stock exhaust system? Do the extra exhaust components really make a difference? I'm set on a Magnaflow (even though all y'all keep talking about a BAM). Guy at the truck joint told me to get a Magnaflow muffler and do a resonator delete. I'm looking for the truck to sound awesome idling and off the line. Not looking for the thing to be blaring down the highway. Please advise!

 

You mentioned BAM...it basically uses the stock system except the muffler and a few feet of pipe. I have it and it is awesome. It sounds like what you described you want it to sound like. I highly recommend it!

Problem with slapping on any old muffler is the drone. Unless you know someone that's put that specific muffler on a tundra, you won't know if u have drone until it's too late. BAM is proven to have little to no drone. And welcome.

The guy at the truck place is going to make $$ off you selling you a magbaflow under the pretense that it is going to sound the way that you want it to sound. (I saw your description of what you're looking for and I can tell you what he is recommending is going to be loud inside the cab or quiet outside, or both, depending on what size magnaflow he welds in there)

The guys in this forum have the same passion that you do and won't make a single dime off of you. Well, except me, but I just so happen to have the same passion as you and all these guys in this forum, that's why my entire life is tundra exhaust.

When I make you something it won't be a guess based on doing an exhaust on a hand full of tundras. It will be a system that I designed based on days or weeks of r&d before I offer it to the public.

If the system doesn't sound exactly how you want it to I swap it with another system. No exhaust shop is going to back up the sound like that

And my pricing is usually right in line with muffler shops that are going to permanently mutilate your exhaust. My systems can be booted in with simple hand tools. And are fully reversible. When you sell or trade in your truck take it off and sell it used, and I'll even help you market your used system.

16' didn't come with a resonator.

Man, I've learned never to take what a truck joint salesman is saying at face value. There's always some commission behind his BS with little to no knowledge except what they memorize in the brochure. That's one of the many reasons I joined this forum, to get honest, no BS, straight up answers to my questions from guys who have been/are there and care as much about their truck as I do mine (with a little bit of fun included! LOL)

Dirty deeds has been a vendor on here for a while and seems to genuinely want to help guys like you make the right decision along with a nice encyclopedia of info under "mufflers" and "exhaust systems".

@KCTundra , welcome. I would highly recommend you go with the BA system from @dirtydeeds . I haven't bought one yet, but it is my next purchase for the truck. I bought all of my suspension components from him, and spent probably 30 minutes on the phone with him talking about exhausts. I was mind blown when I got off the phone with Keith; like in those Jet commercials with the purple smoke. LOL

Also, you can youtube videos of the exhaust and there is even one of Keith installing an exhaust with his eyes closed. haha

Just to give you an idea of the thought he puts into matching the right system with the right truck/owner, here are some of the questions he asked me (I'm sure there are more, these are the ones I remember):
1. Motor size?
2. Where do I live?
3. Flat, Mountains, Hilly?
4. Do I tow / haul?
5. What kind of sound do I want?
6. Do I have CAI or headers?
7. Do I plan to get #6?
8. Am I lifted with bigger tires/rims?

Based on all the factors, he makes a recommendation. I cannot wait to get mine. I'm hoping the wife comes through at Christmas for me.

Keith, can you tell me which one it is off your website? How long does this take to install? Can I install it in my driveway?

 

Looks like the budget system dumped, and I believe all of his systems are bolt on! He also has a great install video on his site that I watched about 20 times while I was waiting on mine to come in!

 

Trust me if I can install it anyone can. Took me 45 minutes about and I am a complete novice. Everything fit perfect and I was wasting gas in no time. I was half in my garage and half in the driveway

 

That is our budget dumped system. The drone is enough that I would try to steer anyone concerned about drone away from our dumped systems. But we make that exact same system in a way which ties back to the stock tailpipe. This makes a very aggressive sound when on the throttle. Yet quiet when cruising down the highway.

But doesn't apply to this system I promise. Tundra exhaust manifolds and mid pipes are very restrictive. This makes them naturally quiet unless you jnstall long tube headers. That's another story, it's loud as hell with long tubes.

When cruising down the highway the only sound coming from the exhaust is a specific frequency. Our helmholtz resonator specifically cuts out that exact frequency making for a very quiet truck even straight pipes

 

So I know absolutely nothing about exhaust, etc. Besides the better sound, what are the other benefits of going with something like this over stock?

 

They aren't huge benefits over stock rather than making your truck come alive. It would probably help your MPG slightly if you could keep your foot off the pedal. The real benefits come when compared to other aftermarket exhausts as you don't lose the low end torque that some systems cause, and you don't get the annoying drone that makes a lot of systems unbearable.

 

Well coming from the '14 Silverado, to the '16 Tundra, the sound it makes is 100x better. Sounds like I'm driving a real truck now. I could only imagine what one of these upgrades would do, ha.

 

Hit the nail on the head. And you gain 3-10hp and 10-20tq over stock.

 

Nice.. I'll be doing retrofit headlights and TRD grill first, but I'll have to add this to the list. Especially if I can install it myself like everyone says.

 

Install is a breeze for sure! Less than an hour job even if you don't jack the truck up to do it. I didn't have a holesaw to cut the hole for the resonator so I just installed the muffler at first and left the tailpipe off so I could get the hole cut and paint it black to match the rest of the system. Wen't back under the next day and reinstalled the tailpipe and added the resonator plus a black tip.

Did everyone mostly keep the single exhaust, or better to go dual exhaust. Sorry to hijack your thread @KCTundra, but I guess it all fits with the original info.

keep the single not much need for the dual unless you have headers or supercharger

 

I'm sure Keith will chime in again with the benefits of single vs dual, but my understanding is that the dual will cause a loss of low end tq unless you plan to add headers and stuff later on and the only benefit is looks.

 

No worries. I'm still laughing at @16tunterd . I did so much freaking research on exhaust for this thing. I read forums on Magnaflow, Flowmaster, Borla, etc. I also read all of the posts about the BA. The thing that sold me was the fact that everyone on this thread is talking about it, and after seeing the youtube video I posted above, It was apparent that this was the one for my truck. The video shows the dude going down the highway and at 60-65mph, it almost sounds as if the exhaust shuts off. That right there was my selling point.

Keith talked me into stainless due to living in KC and the salt on the roads and whatnot.
