Heard same weight diesel oil cleans the crank case out real good due to the crazy amount of detergents in it. About the same amount of powerful detergents in 4 stroke outboard motor oils also. Run the motors for about 500 miles then change out for car oil. All this sounds good, but if an old motor ain't broke don't fix it.

However, the fuel system is different and instead of pouring a bottle of Chevron Techron concentrate into the tank next time around, will have to try a can of Seafoam due to people here swearing by it.

 

Treat the gas & oil 500 miles before you change the plugs, install your clean new plugs in a cleaner engine.

 

Don't forget to change the fuel filter too, if you can get to it easy enough. Some are in the tank and hard to reach.

 

Liqui Molly has some good products. I used the Engine Cleaner pictured last fall. Add in to old oil and run engine for 10 minutes. Drain and replace oil filter and add your new oil just like normal.

I did a secondary oil change right after running for 25 miles as an additional purge.

The switch to full synthetic oil is a great engine cleaner in itself.



Last month put in some Liqui Molly ceramic nano technology in the form of ‘CeraTec’ that so far has made the fairly quiet Tundra engine even quieter. Haven’t compiled much MPG data, but so far maybe .5 mile extra a gallon which is in line with most reviewers. Man this engine is PURRING!

 

I've been using seafoam for nearly 20 years now, in several different types of cars/ engines, including turbo charged. I started using it in my 01 tundra at 158k around 7 years ago. Zero issues and the truck still runs like it's brand new.
I can understand the concerns of using it in poorly maintained engines with potential sludge, but outside of that, this stuff is awesome.

 

Seafoam FTW! I have de-carboned with Seafoam, I have PMed with Seafoam, I have kept gas fresh with it, I have removed water from engine oil with it. I use it on everything and often for 20+ years now.

 

I watched this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6UeJXkzDW8 and thought there could be some positive impact, but nothing dramatic (as we should expect). I have not tried it myself...

 

Smoke bellowing out of the exhaust pipes is not proof that the Seafoam works, it only proves that a certain additive can produce an exorbitant amount of smoke when burned in an internal combustion engine. I suppose proof would be before and after pictures of the pistons and valves, or an engine teardown. The rest is purely subjective, IMHO, unless you have detailed data on MPGs and the like over time for comparison.

 

I had a 79’ Honda Civic CVCC Hatchback that smoked like that every 2nd or 3rd start up. A notorious problem for the CVCC engine but somehow never needed oil?

Well I went and added a can to my tank, at 1/4 full, drove 50 miles to town and filled the tank. No smoke, engine didn't detonate, but no performance difference. Later I replaced the Denso plugs with a new set of same, and noticing the huge gap in the old plugs which, surprisingly, were firing off well. The new plugs did indeed improve performance slightly and my gas mileage has improved.

In an aside, when trying to determine the right spark plug gap after finding various gap recommendations, from .032 to .045, I settled on .032. BUT, in the search I visited Toyota's web site and after entering my VIN# I found that my truck is equipped with a limited slip differential. Score!

 

Had a neighbor put some in a take and the next thing you know truck is smoking something awful out the right side. Took it to the dealer and they checked it out and he told them what he had done and turns out an injector stuck open and burned up a cylinder. I personally do not know what caused what the only thing I can tell you is truck was running fine until he did what he did?! They offered him 11.5 for his truck on trade in. One week later he had a new truck and I didn’t ask because he was really upset about what took place. He just retired that week too.

 

I have also seen an old farmer buddy of mine dump my year old two cycle gas from my boat in his tank and go down the toad like he didn’t have a care in the world?

 

Usually make my own Sea Foam. 4 parts diesel, 2 parts white gas(camping stove fuel), 1 part IPA or 90 proof rubbing alcohol.

 

It's just another useful tool, not a cure-all...read and follow label directions.

 

The only white smoke I had was after I got on it and ran the guts out of her..

 

I have done the whole treatment they recommended on 3 vehicles and never had an issues after doing them and I have never had the white smoke rolling while it was being done.

 

On most weekends I'm about 10% full of IPA too.

My 2017 Tundra only has 10.4K on it, but I realized even though the truck may not have that many miles on it, it maybe time for a fuel system cleaner to be added to a tank of gas since its been 2.5 years. Back story- I was driving with regular gas a couple month ago uphill at around 1600 rpm when the truck decided to shift into the next gear, decreasing the rep to around 1100 and I heard the ping or should I say pre-detonation. Concerned, I drove the hill a few more times and realized when my truck shifts to a new gear at a higher rpm than what I stated above then there wasn't a ping. Never less, I decided to use 93 octane for the past two months. No more issues, but figured it may be time for a fuel system cleaner.

I cam across this thread in my Seafoam research. Very imformative- thanks everyone! I decided to look up the Seafoam website and came across some interesting information (https://seafoamsales.com/product/sea-foam-motor-treatment-oil-fuel-additive/) which leads me to ask the following:

1) Should my initial use of Seafoam be for fuel system maintenance or for cleaning since my vehicle is 2.5 years old? Below are the Seafoam instructions:

• For regular fuel system maintenance, add 1 ounce per gallon of fuel.
• For cleaning, use 2 or more ounces per gallon – the more you add to fuel, the better it cleans

Which means our 38 gal tank would require 38 oz or 2.375 cans (based on a 16 oz Seafoam bottle) for regular system maintenance // 76 oz or 4.75 cans for cleaning.

Note the instructions also state: "Don’t worry if you exceed these amounts: Sea Foam only contains petroleum-based cleaning and lubricating ingredients that CAN’T HARM your engine or fuel system components."

2) Does Seafoam help with pre-detonation?

3) Does it matter what fuel grade I use when using Seafoam?

I just add a full can to the fuel tank every couple of months. I also add 1/2 a can to the oil about 500 miles before every 4th oil change. I have never had a problem arise from doing it this way.
