I would have to disagree with the "strategic spacing" theory. It is essentially what Toyota did from the start... and it didn't work for them either.

 

And I disagree with your comment because what I’ve done has worked very well. Its much quieter inside the cab. The OEM stereo sounds upgraded. Can you disagree with those facts over the internet?

 

Yeah there is definitely no need for 100% coverage with dynamat/ noico type material. 25% is more than enough. It's all about placement and proper installation.
With foam and MLV you want to have as much area covered as you can but those materials are to lessen road noise, the butyl/foil CLD tiles are for vibrations and rattles. It's very expensive and a waste of money to cover panels 100% with that stuff.

Well...too late for me then, I've used a ton of the stuff. I guess if I knew a lot about acoustics and stereos I would feel ok with strategic placement, but I can say that loading up the entire door works quite well and I'm still running a stock system also. I have no idea if it works better than a few sheets strategically placed, I just know it works. Given that I still have tons of the matting I'm going to keep on with my current strategy...not sure what the hell else I'd use the leftovers for?

 

There is nothing What you are doing and it won't negatively impact anything at all. Probably overall is better. Its just not 100% necessary and gets expensive. You could get similar results with far less coverage. That said if I could afford to I would have increased my coverage by probably double but I had already planned on foam and MLV on my project. Theres nothing wrong in proceeding as you plan at all, there are just other ways to do it.

 

I'm going to run an experiment on some scraps, I'll post what I discover.

 

No worries, I bought 36sqft of Noico 80mil sound deadener because I theorized most of my noise was vibrational from the truck's hard suspension. It saved me time not having to make several strategic pieces. I was ready to overkill it with another layer of Noico Green 170mil sound insulation but I was so pleasantly surprised by the significant noise reduction, continuing would mean diminishing returns for my time and money.

I don't think you can be faulted for either method as long as you have a coverage layer, whether you use butyl or MLV. I mean depending on the brands you buy it should cost less to do the combo but for me, it cost less for 36sf N80, vs 18sf N80 + 36sf N170, and certainly less than 36+36, my original plan.

As for my experience and grounds of disagreeing...

I've worked on autonomous vehicles with MIT, and my job was... Ambiet Vehicle Acoustic Suppression. Yes, to sound proof, and sound deaden prototype driverless Hummers, but what would I know.

So stick with your 25%, if that works for you, and I'll stick with what I know. Good luck and no hard feelings.

 

Have any of you experienced a whistling sound coming from the doors?
It's less noticeable when I recirculate the AC, but it's still there.

If you have this problem, did sound matting the doors stop it?

 

It’s highly possible that stock has some sort of whistling because it’s a hollow steel door with just a tiny baton size piece of deadener inside on the steel and some blue plastic covering the large hole. Any breaks in the seal could whistle.



Whether your final coverage layer is deadener or MLV, it covers a larger area and the butyl deadener is very pliable, you can cut some little squares to serve as plugs when you insert those surrounding white fasteners to get the plastic door panel back on virtually eliminating all holes on the door.



You can be very creative with deadener (I used Noico 80) and I used it to seal around the tweeter and put a patch behind the sails.

 

I noticed the plastic installed at the factory was not properly sealed to either door when I replaced my speakers, 12 years of Summer heat had softened that black tar like adhesive and allowed the plastic to droop & pull away. I appreciate your response, and now I know what I need to do. Thank you.

 

I didn't. In my front doors I just tapped and placed. I need to take them all off and add a little more because of the new vibrations that popped up.

My 02’ had a whisle on the passenger side door. It was at the curve just above the grab handle. It would happen on real windy days with cross wind gusts. I ended up bending the door window frame slightly back to tighten the seal. Added some big box weather strip under the OEM fold to fluff it out a bit and the whistle is gone.

Another thing you could try is pulling your gaskets off and cleaning them and then spraying with Silicone PB Blast to refresh. I added some Butyl Rubber to my A Pilliars for additional sound deadening after the windshield was replaced. This was a huge sound killer.

 

Before. BTW there is a metal bracket not pictured which installs over this A pillar and screws into those hose. There is a rubber boot/block on the end which was loose in my case. The bracket was rebent to hold that boot/block tight up into the frame where the hood meets A pillar.

 

Thank you, but I am convinced it's the old factory plastic liner failing because the noise appeared only after I had the door panels off to replace the door checks and speakers.

 

Awesome, I’m going to deaden this area when I get my driver’s side grab handle.

 

Is it flammable? Yes and no. It seems that with constant high intensity flame provided by the mini torch it will catch fire (and the smoke doesn't look healthy) but it also seems to extinguish quickly when the flame is removed. I didn't have any Toyota sheet metal laying around so I used this old shovel, seems to be close in thickness to the door metal. What do you guys think?

Pretty touchy about this topic aren't you? As for freedom, it IS awesome...I'm partial to the entire Constitution, the second amendment probably even more so than the 1st. No need to hold back on your comments about, or for, little old me. I've seen a few things in life and doubt your comment, no matter how harsh, will really offend me.

Perfect timing getting the matting done just in time

 

Yah brother, I cut it pretty close. It was way more time consuming than I thought it would be! But totally worth it!

 

Its probably the most time and best time spent on my truck thus far. This summer I'll be trying some paint correction which will be time consuming but idk if I will get dramatic results like the sound matting
