@J.A.T.O. I did a jato takeoff once. It was fricking awesome. I helped load the jato bottles on the c130 and asked if I could catch the hop and took one Hell of a ride.

Between the USMC and Civilian Service, I'll have 34-years of service when I retire. That's in two years!

As retirement gets closer, I'm interested in thoughts from those that are retired on how they replace the sense of self value we get from doing out jobs. Perhaps not all do, but I'm one of those type A's that is full throttle ahead at all times. The concept of retiring and not having that venue scares me. I've thought about teaching, consulting, sitting on boards, etc., but I'm just not sure. I don't want to work and I don't have to, except for that pesky self value issue.

Retired 4 years ago at age 53. Former locomotive engineer, inventor, business owner. Currently winning a cancer battle. My advice, don't wait too long. There's no guarantee to life's longevity.

Retired for two years and a few days now. Worked for about 44 years at three companies. Time to do something else than the corporate grind. Learned to mig weld, travel and doing some camping. On nice days I put the top down on my M235 and go for a cruise. Still not enough time to do everything. Life is short my friends.

I retired in 2015 due to age restrictions at my former job (mandatory retirement at age 57) and realized that I suck at retirement; went back to working part time after a two year break. My part time schedule varies - one or two days a week on average. I was surprised at how much more I appreciate my time off now that it isn't unlimited. I figure it's the law of supply and demand. When I had all the time in the world and no demands, the time felt less valuable than it does now. I also appreciate the fact that I still get to fly for a few more years.

My shop will be done in a few weeks and I can start unpacking and setting up my tools for my hobbies, blacksmithing and making furniture. Got a little hazelnut orchard planted and a garden started. Picked up a boat for crabbing and fishing. I’m not the one to wonder what to do.

I felt weird at first, 20 years of shift work plus injury recovery. Then one day about a year later all the weight and stress I carried disappeared. I have found that volunteer work at a military ministry has kept me busy and engaged.
Travel opportunities have been plenty. I got to rebuild my relationship at home with family and friends. The list of honey do's is endless. Overall, I find retirement an absolute blessing and I'm truly grateful to have had a career that provided my retirement. I sincerely hope you find there's plenty to do, see and experience especially if you get to share it with your spouse or significant other. Enjoy!

25 years to go. I'm pulling the plug at age 55, no later. At least, that's the plan...

I have retired at least 3 times. Having no hobby is a terrible thing (remember I said that!), but it is tough to pick up a good hobby when you have done nothing but work your entire life.

Maybe I can answer a few. Been fully retired these last 2 years. The first year really sucked because I didn't have anything to do. I worked as a firearms instructor and taught LTC classes. Got bored with some of it. I had a lady accidentally shoot herself in the wrist and I figured, nope time to go...

Battled cancer twice, so keep up the good fight. Now I help a Vietnam Era Veteran when he needs something. Most of the time I do the house stuff since wife works.

So, that's how I have dealt with retirement. If you have noticed, I didn't say I hung out with people I use to work with. Seems like you just fade away after leaving a department.

I hope all you guys enjoy your retirement as much as I have.

I did a lifetime in the building trades as a sheet metal worker and was lucky enough to earn a nice retirement after 31 years.
The first 10 years were magical ~ the second 10 years an endurance ~ the final 11 years were a sentence that I would not wish on anyone.
Retirement ~ I recommend it to all my friends ! :)

I retired April 2,2013 after putting in 37 years working for a State highway enforcement agency (DPS), I miss the job and even a few of the officer's I worked with but I do not miss the B S that there is now. So for right now both me and the dog sit on the couch and both of us just get older and fatter.

I'm retired until the boss gets my truck engine put back together. I'm gonna have to work til I die, and then another week. Don't have any grandchildren yet, health has been good.
